Monster Loot – Icewind Dale: Rime of the Frostmaiden

ADD TO WISHLIST >

I want to loot Auril the Frostmaiden!

When brave adventurers face the dangers of the world, they want something to show for it. This supplement provides individual loot for each monster appearing in Icewind Dale: Rime of the Frostmaiden, as well as a basic crafting and harvesting system that works well with 5th Edition Dungeons & Dragons.

With this supplement, these brave adventurers will be able to craft the hide, teeth, and claws of their enemies into dangerous weapons and equipment that is sure to mark them as legendary heroes of the realm.

Examples of Loot

Coldlight Walker

  • 1 Coldlight Walker Head. This head sheds bright light in a 20-foot radius and dim light for an additional 20 feet if not covered. As an action, you can target one creature within the bright light that you can see and force it to make a DC 14 Constitution saving throw. On a failed save, the creature is blinded until the beginning of your next turn. The head has this effect for 2d4 days after being harvested, after which it turns into a non-magical decaying head.

  • 1d6 Vials of Frost Essence. As an action, you can throw this vial up to 30 feet away where it shatters in a cloud of powder snow. The area within a 10 foot radius of where the vial landed becomes freezing cold and each creature within the area immediately takes 2d4 cold damage. When consumed, you have resistance to cold damage.

Gnome Ceremorph

  • 1 Broken Breastplate.

  • 1d2 Gnome Ceremorph Eyes. When consumed, you gain darkvision out to a range of 120 feet for one hour.

  • 1d4 Gnome Ceremorph Tentacles. Can be crafted into a dagger (300 gp, 19 days) or a shortsword (300 gp, 19 days). Once per day, when you hit a creature with this weapon you can force it to make a DC 15 Intelligence saving throw. On a failed save, the creature is stunned until the end of its next turn.

  • 1 Laser Pistol. This weapon functions as a martial ranged weapon with a range of 40/120 that deals 2d6 radiant damage on a hit. It is powered by an energy cell which contains enough power to fire off 50 shots. The laser pistol has 5d10 shots left when looted.

  • 1d4 Vials of Gnome Ceremorph Blood. When consumed, you have advantage on saving throws against spells and other magical effects for one hour.

Greetings Anne,

I hope this message reaches you! I am a content creator here on the DMSGuild and I would like to get in touch with you about borrowing some of your ideas. I have a concept that, I thought, was unique until I stumbled upon your "Monster Loot" series. It is different enough that I don't see a conflict of interest, but I was hoping you might allow me to adopt some of your "harvesting mechanic." It's not a 1-to-1. In anycase, I'd like to connect and discuss. I can leave you email or you could respond to me here. Whichever you prefer! Thanks!

Hi there, bought this for Icewind Dale, just started the campaign but love the content. I'm curious though, I use FoundryVTT to manage everything, is there any way to get this data into FoundryVTT that you know of? (obviously I'm happy to pay for a digital version as well as the PDF I have already).

If not, it's not a big deal cause it's all great anyway :-)

Sorry, I don't know much about VTT systems so I can't help you there. I'm glad you're enjoying the content though!

Do you just choose random monsters from the monster manual for that section? Or are most of them thematic to the module?

Not sure what you mean. The monsters in the latter section of the PDF are all the Monster Manual creatures that appear in the adventure. I don't know if that's what you're asking, but the monsters aren't chosen at random, I can tell you that much!

Out of curiosity, how do you handle the Mending spell to fix broken items? Having a hard time convincing players that the spell won't work...

If the item is consumed, it obviously can't be mended. If it's a one-use item, the magic is expended when the item is used. Though mending can repair magic items if broken, it cannot restore magic to an item once it has been expended.

Hope that helps!

Sorry, I should have been more specific.
A lot of the loot tables list things like "Broken short sword, Broken leather armor" etc. Pieces that require gold to fix to become useful. However, my players are saying "I mend it" so they can sell it at full cost. Seems like it defeats the purpose! :D

The items would require materials and resources not provided by a cantrip. The examples provided by the spell include things like a broken chain link and a cloak, not items such as armor and weapons that need a skilled artisan to create.

What I would do is allow the mending to take place, but the item still doesn't work. The armor is too thin and flimsy in places, offering poor protection or stops you from moving comfortably. Weapons are off balance and cannot be used effectively. Basically, it would provide enough penalties onto the wearer/user that, though it may appear functional, it's still broken. If the players want to try and sell the equipment at full price they can try and convince whoever they're selling to that the equipment works fine, but any skilled artisan who inspects it knows something is off.

Yep, that's kinda what I went with, but those additional details are perfect. TYVM!

Amazing resource, I'll certainly buy other publications of this series. Some minor remarks, this is a very generous guide (i.e. Studded Leather Armor craftable in 3 days from a single fox hide), so people who want to emphasize the gritty survival horror of Rime of the Frostmaiden might want to tweak this a bit. I love the general flavour and richness in detail of this excellent resource! Very helpful, will use this a lot.

I couldn't edit this, just wanted to add that I misread: it takes 8 fox hides. I take my comment back!

This is so relatable. I've made tons of errors like that while looking through it at the table and I wrote the damn thing :D

Though I do like the idea of studded leather being made from just one fox. It just has to be a VERY big fox!

Hi this is great, really brings an extra layer to killing the monsters for my group. Do you have anything for the glowing Reindeer?

Hey there, awesome document but I'm a bit confused as to why Knucklehead trout only produce 1 ration after catching since they're a 5 foot long fish that is the main source of food in ten-towns (would have to be a couple thousand knucklehead trouts caught per day to feed everyone!)

There's also a typo on Helmed Horror, it seems to have the entry for Hawk copied over to it

No worries! As I said, I found this all super useful, I've been trying to compile a "deck" of items to give my IRL players monster loot but it seems that there are nearly 400 items to make cards for!

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
