Strahd's Manual of Shadow

Strahd's Manual of Shadow is the ultimate guide to running horror or Halloween themed games, written by the Vampire himself! This 207-page book is bursting with new spooky content, including:

  • Five new races
  • A myriad of new backgrounds, feats, spells, and items
  • Expanded bestiary full of things that go bump in the night

Some of the new races and classes are brand-new to D&D, while others are reimaginings of existing concepts.

Drider (Lolth's "blessing" that turns a spider and drow into a monstrous combination)

Etherkin (an ancient race lost in the Ethereal Plane, that evolved into a skulking, lurking race making ideal thieves and assassins)

Pumpkinhead (exactly what you'd expect)

Ravenbound (transformed by the Raven Queen to do her dread bidding)

Scarecrow (some have broken free and formed autonomy from their creators)

Ghost: a new way for dead PCs to keep adventuring. Available for free here:

Harvester: anti-paladins that use their dread presence to terrify their foes. You can build your harvester as a Grim Reaper, a Night Rider/Headless Horseman, or a more comedic Pumpkin Lord that conjures ferocious jack o'lanterns.

Undying: another option for PCs to multiclass into after dying. Keep adventuring as a sentient ghoul, revenant, skeleton, wight, or zombie!

Vampire: Strahd says that this is the best class, but let's be real, he's biased. Still, if you want to adventure as a vampire, now you can.

Werewolf: Mechanically a blend of Barbarian, Druid, and Monk with ample role-playing opportunities.

Witch: A unique wisdom-based casting class using the Spell Point variant rules from the DMG. Each witch coven takes a very distinctive approach to spellcasting.

And of course there are still new backgrounds, feats, mundane and magical items, spells, and monsters! The bestiary introduces new horrific creatures ranging from malicious little CR 1 jack o'lanterns to world-altering, doom-inspiring overlords. What happens when a vampire decides that he needs still more security that he will never die? How far will he go to become immortal? Only the bravest adventurers can hope to take on... the Vampyrilich.

I'm not sure I'm going to ever use this because it's legit kinda creepy and I'm not too into horror. Thanks for giving me creepy dreams, speaks to the solid quality of the design. Well done by the team. [...]

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
