Darkhold: Secrets of the Zhentarim
Quick Preview
Full‑size Preview

Join the most infamous organization in Faerûn, using the secrets within this book to run a campaign featuring the Zhentarim and their stronghold of Darkhold itself.

For centuries, the Zhentarim have been expanding their influence throughout Faerûn. Known as the "Black Network” to outsiders, those within consider themselves part of an extended family that affords them immense opportunities and generously rewards ability and ambition. The great stronghold of the Zhentarim is called Darkhold, a high-spired keep of black stone built to gigantic proportions. There are few places in Faerûn with a more notorious—and nefarious—reputation.

This full-color, 112-page supplement includes:

  • A comprehensive history and guide to the Black Network, including never-before-revealed lore from Ed Greenwood, creator of the Forgotten Realms
  • New subclasses, spells, and other player options
  • New magic items of the Zhentarim
  • Expanded rules for thieves’ cant for integration in your game
  • A guide to the history, operations, and locations within Darkhold, infamous headquarters of the Zhentarim
  • A stunning cutaway map of Darkhold Castle
  • A gazetteer for Sunset Vale including a beautiful map of the region
  • Advice for playing evil characters and running evil campaigns, whether with the Zhentarim or in any other setting
  • Dozens of adventure seeds
  • New creatures and villains, including stunning art of key Zhentarim leaders
  • And much, much more...

Join the Zhentarim... if you dare!

I was almost going to buy this book but then I read the foreword and I saw you arbitrarily politically correct story and characters like Ashemmi. You should have more respect for those who came before you and the stories they wrote. Lore is lore and it should stay how it was written, you can change it in your house games but when you release something for the public you must keep things as they were written by their original authors and not deciding for us what's ok and what's not.

I wanted to let you know this product is absolutely amazing and I love it. My players are really into their factions and try to pick up faction missions as often as they can. I do have one question for you. Are you planning on making a book for each of the factions? I would easily pay for every single one of these for each faction. The faction spells are amazing and I love awarding faction equipment for ranking up and a job well done. Please make more of these for the other factions. I love how this came out. I have printed off and laminated my own copy and would love for more.

Just got this and wow I'm blown away!

One question, is Velya the Allsight supposed to get Sneak Attack? I don't see it in her stat block, yet she has the Assassinate feature and without it her damage output seems very limited.

I'm excited to use this in my current campaign. It's a great resource to add on to the Zhentarim in my game. Thanks for this! (Also, might want to check the full-size preview file. It's a bit complete.) I can't wait to hit my players with more Black Network shenanigans!

Hi Badger, our apologies for the excessive emails - it's hard to get the balance right, sometimes.

We hope you really enjoy the book!

I think if you set the alert for like a fortnight/month after purchase.

I love a bunch of the contributors [you included] and its become safe to purchase immediately when I see such names in order to show my support. This despite the fact I might not read the document for some time. An example is that I have only skimmed the Calimshan Adventurer's Guide.

It just felt in my face a bit. So thank you for the apology.

Hey there, I see another offering called THE SECRET MAPS... are these included WITH the Darkhold: Secrets of the Zhentarim, or an additional purchase? OR, it's just a better quality map than what comes with it? Thank you!
Customer avatar
Anthony J August 20, 2020 2:01 am UTC
When you purchase this product you get both maps as seen above in 600 dpi for Sunset Vale and 300 dpi for Darkhold. Marco is selling his maps separately, both at 600 dpi and slightly different fonts on them. Plus his comes with a personal use license that allows you to get them blown up and printed at stores that require licenses.

I shouldn't rate this since I was a consultant for portions of it, but congratulations everyone! 5 stars for all the lore material! Good stuff to borrow for my Waterdeep campaign.

Small suggestion: It'd be great if you made a separate document containing just the player-facing guidelines for playing evil characters. Something Dungeon Masters can print/save and distribute to their players at the table without having to chop up the document in Adobe Acrobat themselves. It'd be a good handout to have for session 0s.

Thanks for all your help on this, Hiten. I'm glad you are pleased with the finished book!

Question about Lunar Manifestation spell: Is it accurate that the full moon is a 20 ft radius and the lunar eclipse is a 30 ft radius? Or are they both supposed to be 30 ft?
Customer avatar
Justice A August 19, 2020 6:47 pm UTC
Hi Alexander!

You're right on your second question. They are both supposed to be 30 feet. We'll update this on the 1.1 update.

Thank you!

That's disappointing, but at least that means I can order it now, since I don't have to wait to see if it becomes POD.

Rules Edition(s)
Original electronic
Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
