The Feaster Class

You are what you eat...

A dwarven warrior smiles as he examines the magic sword, nodding appreciatively. Then he takes a bite out of the blade.

A goliath huntress pulls her arrow from the dragon's corpse, licking the blood from the tip. She can taste the magic within, the fire waiting to roar free from her lips...

Embrace your potential and grow from every encounter with the Feaster, a new playable class for D&D5e. Consume the traits and abilities of your slain foes or even magical items and make them your own. Your only limitation is where your adventure takes you...

Having acquired their power from a freak, near-fatal accident of some kind in the Underdark or similar alien environment, Feasters have managed to acquire the ability to ingest the flesh of beasts, monstrosities, and even magical items. How this mutation manifests depends on the Feaster. Some might appear ordinary yet possess a savage ferocity in battle. Others might physically change their form into that of a great beast of the depths. Still others might shy away from the...bestial nature of a Feaster, using their talents to transform hideous monsters into mouth-watering delicacies with magical effects.

This product contains a new class with three archetype options: the Feral Devourer, the Deep-Dweller, and the Chef.

Includes  the "Hunger Traits and Abilities" supplement, which provides a list of 200+ creature traits and abilities, and how the Feaster might utilize them, as well as special rules for Multiattack, Natural Armor, Natural Weapons, Breath Weapons, and Innate Spellcasting!

Also included are handouts designed by Valerie Duncan, to help you manage your Hunger Traits and class features as easily as a wizard does spells!

CHANGE LOG:

  • Addition of a main class handout, traits-only handout with space for descriptions, and subclass handouts to improve quality-of-life.

v1.2

  • "Hunger" is now a 1st level feature, and now includes a saving throw, save DC, and attack modifier
  • New 2nd level feature: "Heightened Senses"
  • The Feaster now has "Extra Attack" at 5th level
  • Survival has been added as class skill proficiency option
  • New 13th level feature: Arcane Siphon (an improvement to the Arcane Devourer feature)
  • Minor changes to the Feral Devourer's features
  • Minor adjustment to the Chef's "Master Chef" feature to avoid overpowered synergy with the Arcane Devourer and Arcane Siphon features
  • Addition of the "Hunger Traits and Abilities" supplement, which provides a list of 200+ creature traits and abilities, and how the Feaster might utilize them, as well as special rules for Multiattack, Natural Armor, Natural Weapons, Breath Weapons, and Innate Spellcasting.

Hi Galen, I notice its been a while since you last edited this, but I have a few questions regarding the class. When using the Arcane Devourer ability and eat a magic item, do you gain every benefit of a given magic item? Or do you only get one random benefit, similar to getting one random trait from a devoured creature? Some magic items like staves have different distinct abilities, while rings usually only have a single effect. Furthermore, how do items with charges work once consumed? Is eating an item pretty much the same as equipping it and attuning to it?

Hi there Seth! Thanks for looking over the Feaster class (if you've been playing it, I'd be curious to know how it's going).

Updates have been slow due to work, but I've been working with another playtester to work out some kinks and refine the feaster. v1.3 will have several updates, some of which I'll include below for your benefit.

In regards to the Arcane Devourer ability: this is one of those tricky things where I initially thought of it as an easy 1-1 to the regular Hunger trait, where either the DM picks one of the item's traits or you roll a d4/d6/d8 to determine which trait you receive. However, as you noted, some items have charges, and others have traits which are linked to each other (such as a Vorpal Longsword, which grants a bonus to attack and damage rolls, allows you to ignore resistance to slashing damage, and the decapitation crit). You could rule that each of those qualities are their own trait, or lump them together as one big 'ol package (at your own risk, but fun)....See more

I'd love to hear your thoughts and ideas as well. The Feaster is very much in-development, so there is plenty of room for improvement and alteration.

A few of the changes coming with v1.3:
-Hit die changed from 1d8 to 1d10
-Minor Hunger trait cost tweaks
-Hunger feature wording change: "As an action, you can consume the flesh of slain creatures, so long as they have physical form to eat and have not been dead for longer than 1 hour."
-Addition to the Multiattack wording: "When considering the action economy, Multiattack is an Action."
-Edit to Extra Attack wording: "Note that if you acquire the Multiattack trait from your Hunger feature, Multiattack is its own action and can't be used as part of the regular Attack action."
-Change to Natural Weapons: A feaster can grow and dismiss their natural weapons as a single bonus action.
-Parameters for Chef-ingredient gathering: how many servings-worth of ingredients a feaster gathers...See more

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
