The Lords of Ravenloft. Classic darklords updated to 5e
by “Jester” David Gibson

Stat blocks for a staggering eighty-one (!!) non-player characters.

Have you played Curse of Strahd and want to face another powerful lord in the Demiplane of Dread? Just purchased van Richten's Guide to Ravenloft and need statistics for a favourite darklord? Are you an old fan of the Ravenloft Campaign Setting and long to see the return of an old favourite? Or do you just want a more powerful banshee, ghost pirate, lich, or necromancer for your game?
If so, then this is the book for you!

Inside this product are 5th Edition stat blocks for the twenty-three darklords who rule the domains of the Core, the ten darklords who rule the seas and islands within, thirteen overlords that rule the key Clusters, as well as the lords of thirteen Islands of Terror, old and new. Four demilords of pocket domains are also included, and it ends with four darklords from van Richten's Guide to Ravenloft! Featured darklords include:

  • Azalin Rex, the once and current ruler of Darkon
  • Lord Soth, the former darklord of Sithicus, and his replacement Inza
  • Fallen silver dragon Arantor
  • The flesh golem Adam along with his creator, Victor Mordenheim
  • Gabrielle Aderre and her treacherous son, Malocchio
  • The misanthropic necromancer, Meredoth
  • The foul members of the Nightmare Court
  • The ancient mummy, Anhktepot, master of the desert land of Har’Akir
  • Mistress of the Trial of the Heart, Chakuna
  • The cunning doppelganger Sodo, ruler of the city of Paridon
  • The cruel living puppet Maligno
  • The powerful illithid God-Brain of Bluetspur
  • And, of course, Strahd, who has been boosted in power level to be closer to his presentation in the campaign setting

Also in the book are fourteen important NPCs who aren't darklords.

  • Undead thief, Ratik Ubel
  • The inventive Night Hag Styrix and her Rift Spanner
  • Secret celestial Isolde, and the Twisting Dark Gift

Furthermore, over a half-dozen darklords in this product have even been given Mythic traits and actions, as introduced in Mythic Odysseys of Theros! Surprise your players with a mythic Strahd and watch their blood drain.

I wasn't able to comment on your blog, so I thought I'd put it in here.

I love your work on DMsGuild, and hope you continue. I own most of your books. You're a talented and dedicated writer, and honestly the past-denigrating current policy of WotC and what they've done with a setting I love saddens me.

I hope you get enough sales on "Who's Doomed" to finish it, and that you continue your other projects. Your work and the work other dedicated fans keeps the Ravenloft we love alive.

Thanks for the positive feedback.

Sales have been steady for Who's Doomed. I've already started work on the lords of the pocket domains; I said I'd add them and I try and keep my promises. (Davion is proving to be an interesting challenge.)
I'm uncertain about after that. I'll see if there's still a demand.

Hey there. Just wondering if you were ever able to update this with the pocket domains?

Hello there,

When I updated the product with darklords from VRGtR I also added the demilords of a couple pocket domains (Davion, Juste, Lady of the Lake) as well as the Nightmare Court but apparently neglected to make that clear enough in the product description.
But the book is overdue for another update. Likely the 4e darklords and a few unique NPCs.

Maybe it's nothing, but I purchased a previous version of this document. It says in the preview that it has been updated with Darklords from the Islands of Terror, but they don't appear in the available versions of 1.21 or 1.3. Is it just newly updated and hasn't become available yet or is there some error?

Odd. They should be there, on pages 89 - 101.

But just to be safe I've re-uploaded the file in the event it failed to fully upload to the site. Thanks for commenting.

Could it be that David Gibson is the foremost expert on Ravenloft ever? It very well could.
As far as I'm concerned, his work on Ravenloft is the official material.

But even besides that, at the time of writing, this book is 88 pages of great content and immaculate layout (surely, because of the years of experience working on the different Ravenloft netbooks) - too bad there is no PoD option.

It would be more than worth the price just for the stats conversion, but the book also contains dark lord's histories, information about their lairs and curses, custom portrait art for each of them (in a pyrography pen style), and even the mythic traits for some of the darklords.

I am enjoying the supplement--it has many good ideas. I hope it sells well enough so that you are able to continue expanding it. I do see the document could use a second pass on editing, there are some clunky sentences such as "A gates of Castle Ravenloft open or close," instead of "The gates of Castle Ravenloft open or close." Also, certain mechanics are unclear. For example, with the optional Mythic Strahd, the text says "However, when Strahd takes an action, he briefly becomes solid just long [sic] to complete the action," so is this intended to mean he can take any action he would be able to take in his regular vampire form? I would write something similar to the following: "However, in his mythic mist form, Strahd can take all his regular actions. When he takes an action, he briefly becomes solid just long enough to complete the action."

Thanks! I'll get those fixed.

Yes, the mythic trait was intended to allow Strahd to continue to take his regular actions. Mythic traits generally add options and not take away. (I must have tried a dozen different phrasings for that power.)

I try to edit carefully and do multiple passes, but editing your own stuff is tricky; I could do a half-dozen more passes and always find a missing word, typo, awkward sentence, clumsy phrasing, or mechanic to tighten. (And, inevitably, when fixing a mechanic, introduce all new typos.)

I just want to say this is a great document. It is tempting to make the Darklords powerful, but with many of them, it becomes a test of wicked cunning. Perfect for a tension-filled adventure in the Demiplane of Dread. I really hope to see you update this with Darklords such as Maliglio, Ankhtepot, and more.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
