Valuable Materials for Spellcasters is a reference for DMs and players of all 5E spells that require valuable materials.

Inside you'll find information on all 5E spells compiled from Player’s Handbook, Xanathar’s Guide to Everything, and Lost Laboratory of Kwalish sorted into a variety of tables for DM and player reference.

Why?

After a recent session, one of my players asked me, “Where am I supposed to find 10 gp worth of charcoal, incense, and herbs? We never seem to loot that sort of thing.”

I had never thought about it – I guess he could try to buy it at a magic shop in a nearby town, but why wouldn’t those items be lootable? Not to mention that some of these items seem very obscure. Would a small town shop carry a tiny silver cage worth 100 gp? Or an undead eyeball encased in a gem worth 150+ gp?

Soon afterwards, I began compiling these lists of valuable materials for spellcasters with the idea that when players defeat and loot an enemy who has the ability to cast a certain spell, that enemy ought to have the necessary materials in their possession. If the enemy cast that spell in battle, then those items might be consumed. I wanted to be more aware of how to sprinkle such items into our games; whether at a shop or when finding treasure.

Instead of hunting for the info in the books, I decided a few lists would do the trick. Plus, I’ve always been a fan of lists. Maybe you are too.

Hopefully, DMs and players will find this to be a handy way to keep track and be more aware of valuable materials.

UPDATE 9/15/2020: Included new spell from Icewind Dale: Rime of the Frostmaiden as well as minor fixes.

Every material component that is needed by spell casters clearly laid out. These are the material components that can't be hand-waved by a spell focus or components pouch type of item. This is really so basic to the game that I'm surprised [...]

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
