This toolkit contains everything you need to create exciting one-shot adventures on a single sheet of paper in about 20 minutes. Developed and play-tested over two years, this guide contains the complete methodology, with a flow chart and descriptions of every stage, a dozen random tables to get your creativity flowing, and over 100 examples of adventure starting points, arranged by type and party tier.

Simply print out the template at the back, grab a pencil and some dice, walk through the steps, and you should have everything you need--without a lot of extra wasted effort--to play a 2-4 hour one-shot adventure straight away. Combined with the Spontaneous Dungeon Master's Companion, you can take your games even further into the realm of improvisation and creative surprise.

You can also take advantage of a video playlist full of examples of this approach to game preparation, including a series that takes you through real-time random-roll-based preparation, to a two-hour play-through of the adventure, and a debrief with the players afterward.

This method is designed to be used with 5e, but the approach is actually fairly system-agnostic. With a few minor tweaks to the fantasy-specific elements, it could easily work well to prepare adventures in any setting or RPG system.

My hope is that by using this toolkit you will--like me--save a ton of time getting ready for game night, and have even more satisfying adventures.

Hi - This looks like a great way to approach setting up a one-shot and I'm looking forward to testing it out. One item I noticed in the example on the last page is that it says Godfrey has never met Gilda and that Gilda attempts to kill him and flee out the window. Are those supposed to be references to Ravenna?

Nope, just names I pulled out of the air. The one-shot is meant to be playable anywhere (but set in FR as written). I do hope you enjoy testing it out and look forward to hearing more of your thoughts! :)

Sorry I wasn't more clear. What I meant was that in one part of the example it says Ravenna is possessed and the sister of Gilda, whom Godfrey caroused with and then left destitute with child. Then later in the same example it says Gilda, "whom Godfrey has never met" is under the influence of a spirit of retribution. The Act II section of the example then also says "Gilda attempts to kill Godfrey, then flee", but Act III says "The hunt for Ravenna is on." I was getting the impression that some of the references to Gilda should actually be Ravenna.

Wow, you're totally right. The middle two references should be to the assassin Ravenna. I'll update it now. This may have been an early version or something. My proofreader wife is usually on it with this stuff.

OK, I've updated that. Many thanks! Interested that you gave the sample adventure such a close read. I've been working on fleshing out all the examples in the toolkit to actually create adventures, and am done with quite a few of them. Out of curiosity--is that something you think the community would enjoy? Would you?

I'd certainly be interested in seeing them, yes! Thus far I've only skimmed the majority of the content but jumped to the example because I wanted a better understanding of where this was all headed and the purpose of each element before spending more time going through the steps you've outlined. It's kind of like seeing seeing the food you are going to be cooking before working through the list of ingredients.

These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
