The Raconteur's Lexicon Volume 1: Melee and Ranged Combat

ADD TO WISHLIST >

The Raconteur's Lexicon Expanded Edition is now available! The Expanded Edition includes Vol.1-5 plus a brand new section about Monsters. Every volume has been expanded to include new sections, words, diagrams and more. The Expanded Edition doubles the amount of words from the previously available volumes.

Thank you for making Vol. 1 a GOLD seller!

It’s the end of the session and you must’ve said “You hit with your sword” or “The kobold shoots but misses” at least a dozen times. Even if your delivery is top notch, those descriptions won’t do much for your players’ imaginations. When you sound boring, there’s a good chance that your players are bored.

“Heaving the maul above her head, the barbarian swings in a wide arc, clobbering the owlbear.” Now that’s action your everyone can see! But it takes a lot of energy to narrate dynamically. Fortunately, we’ve done a lot of the work for you.

Welcome to The Raconteur’s Lexicon Volume One. Here is a collection of descriptive words sorted according to damage and weapon type to help Dungeon Masters, players and homebrew authors expand their combat narrative vocabulary. Let these words serve as the building blocks for visual and immersive narration in your stories and sessions.

Volume One contains over 475 exciting words focused on melee and ranged combat.

Also available:
Volume Two: Spellcasting and Conditions
Volume Three: Weather, Terrain, Common Locales and more
Volume Four: Expanded NPC Options: roll tables to help you make memorable NPCs

We'd love to hear from you! If you buy a volume, please consider leaving a rating and a review. If you've used Raconteur's Lexicon in your session, let us know how it worked for you!

Here's what some /reddit users had to say:

"I love you" - DmanJohnson000

"...[I] plan on adding them to my ready-at-a-glance references while DMing. I like how straightforward they are, and the organization is perfect. At first I was surprised by the small number of pages, but as I thought about it this makes sense and adds utility rather than detracts from it. There are hundreds and hundreds of words on those pages. And the recommended price is very, very fair given the work that was put into it." - LordDenning

"I just downloaded the four volumes and I am pouring over them now. They look very good. I'm quite impressed." - MindWolf

"Whoever made this, all of you are geniuses, I never knew I needed this so much." - FallenRune

"Charming, succinct and effective. I'd recommend these to everyone." - VerbiageBarrage

Also available:
Volume Two: Spellcasting and Conditions
Volume Three: Weather, Terrain, Common Locales and more
Volume Four: Expanded NPC Options
Volume Five: Critical Fails

I always find myself using the same three words to describe sword combat: slash, slice and whack.

This resource is well laid out to access at a glance, and I'm sure to use it in my next session to engage my players better! Excellently done

I didn't expect to find much here that wasn't covered in other sources of creative storytelling for DnD. Wow was I surprised, the layout is fantastic and easy to use mid session if you have to, it's so well written, and it contains some of the best descriptions of boring events I could imagine.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
