A Night of Fright! A haunting adventure of meddling heroes and their talking gnoll

Jinkies! Uldryn Beauregard is dead—and he’s left one million gold to anyone who can survive the night in his haunted mansion! But spooky things are going on, and nothing is as it seems. Luckily, Mystery LLC is on the case!

TL;DR Here’s what you get:

    • A four-hour parody-horror adventure that, if you’re asking me, is pretty funny
    • Five ready-to-play pregenerated characters, each with a custom sheet and token for digital play
    • 5 fully playable subclasses to continue the shenanigans of Mystery LLC
    • An interactive PDF and screen reader-friendly doc
    • Maps! There’s even maps in this sucker. One with labels, one with grid lines, a blank one ... you can really go nuts if you’re into maps!
    • The ability to print out and frame that cover art, because look at it it’s so funny and cool

headshots of Mystery LLC

A Night of Fright is a parodic one-shot adventure designed to be played in a single four-hour session by five players. In a loving send-up of classic mystery cartoons, players will take the role of one of four meddling heroes—or their talking gnoll! Explore a haunted mansion full of traps, frights, spooks, scares, ghosts, ghasts, and ghouls to uncover old Uldryn’s secrets before it’s too late—for this is no run-of-the-mill real estate scam. There’s real danger in the mansion and Mystery LLC will need all the help they can get!

(Yes, you can play this without the pregenerated characters or with less than five people. It’ll work fine, I promise. It’s just more fun to actually get to be Mystery LLC!)

With over 20 different possible encounters, no two games will be the same. A fully interactive PDF created by bestselling designer Lydia Van Hoy helps DMs easily navigate the digital format.

Honestly, we just had a lot of fun making this adventure. So much so that we kind of accidentally created five new subclasses: Bespectacled Sleuth Rogue, Warlock of The Damsel, Oath of Traps Paladin, Way of the Coward Monk, and Bardic College of Snacks. These subclasses are fully playable, but a bit more on … let’s generously call it the “fun” side. They’re pretty balanced! Probably! Just don’t peek too close. Anyway, you could actually play a full campaign with the Mystery LLC gang and please do and send us stories.

This adventure is purposefully designed to be a bit on the lighter side. It could fairly be stated that we openly flaunt generally accepted guidelines like “don’t build in villain monologues” and “don’t split the party.” But the result is a replayable, trope-laden game of memorable fun and moderate spooks that multiple playtesters said was “really fun!”

To see a live play of this game, click HERE! The author of this game (me!) ran it on Twitch with One Shot Onslaught.

This adventure has a SEQUEL! Neat, huh? Check out A Night of Fright! 2: The Lich's Ghost right here!

The D&D social group at my work ran this about a month ago, we had such a blast that I got it to run for my local group on Halloween. When recreating the character in D&D Beyond I noticed that some of the spells/abilities weren't naturally available. I was wondering if you had the subclasses created in Beyond so we could use them there, or if you had the subclasses outlined somewhere that we could create them ourselves?

Picked this up for a one shot session with some of my regular group and a couple of first time players. We ended up needing a sixth character so I created a Kobold Barbarian named Skra'pei. The player who played him I fear channeled the spirit of scrappy doo because the party tried to make a plan to ditch him about half way through the scenario.

Why does certain events (such as VSE1) have "Other Locations" while many events (such as VSE2) have "Locations"? Both have many places they can happen it, therefore what's the difference? (Is the preview up to date or those inconsistency are just in the sample? Because VSE7 does mention M6 and U1, yet appears only under M6, and in U1 instead there is SE7, even though there is no mention of a mirror there, but that envent is missing from U9, description, even though there is a mirror there.)
Nevertheless the answers, I might still be looking to acquire this adventure later on.

Hi, Steven. I'm so stoked about this module. What fun! I would like to run the game on Startplaying.games. Is it okay for me to use the module cover art on the site to advertise it?

I have all 3 levels done and Fantasy Grounds walls all set-up for auto-import, but this isn't mine to share about. If the original author(s) wants to include it, I'd provide it to them with no reservations.

I just bought this to run a Halloween one-shot with friends who have never played dnd before. It all looks really great! One question: I'm a bit confused by the ability scores on the character sheets. A lot of the ability scores are left blank (perception, athletics etc). Is that meant to say that they have a zero ability score for that skill? Please help. Thanks!

They have no bonus; the score is the value of whatever ability (STR/DEX/etc) is tied to that skill. Left blank because it gets a little dense with everything filled in!

I purchased this recently and I am very excited to DM it . . it will actually be my first time ever DMing a game. I see in the game info/description that "To see a live play of this game, click HERE! The author of this game (me!) ran it on Twitch with One Shot Onslaught." However, the link to view that twitch video doesn't seem to work. Is there any way I can watch this? I would find it really helpful to help me prepare to DM this. Thanks!

Hi, I'm a little confused, I'm entering the character sheets into roll20 and noticed none of the characters have backgrounds, which means theyre missing half their skill proficiencies and part of their equipment, is that intended?, furthermore, vellmah is missing her expertises

Yes, backgrounds are optional. These characters do not have a background outside of mystery solving! And basic equipment is not required for this game, but may be given at the DM's discretion.

I really loved this game, like probably one of the 2 best games I've ever been in. Almost everyone played their characters really delightfully. Even Dafni was delightful.

I have admittedly only played it once but here are some notes I have:

-Give Fred some rope and other trap supplies in his inventory (best part of our game was Fred making ridiculous traps complete with crayon drawn schematics)

-The encounter closest to sitting room seemed really distracting to clue solving and kind of flubbed the party trying to split up when I rolled the max amount of monsters. I'd probably move it to the dinning room and have less monsters.

-Make the Scooby Snacks more powerful. (Our Scooby never used them. Said they didn't do enough to warrant using them.. which was a bit disappointing thematicly)

-Make one of the npcs really nice.(my group talked about murdering the others multiple times and I think horror excels better and villains seem more villainous if...See more

These are great suggestions, especially the darkvision. I like your idea to magically darken selected rooms, lighten others.

Also, you mentioned you had maps. Would you mind sharing them? I won't reshare them. It's just for my personal group.

This looks really fun, i'll be DMing to a group of friends this weekend. But i have a doubt, how do you decide how much of the family is dead? I cannot find reasons for them to be dead (or alive for that matter). I don't know if i'm missing something or what.
For the rest is really fun, and i'll porbably buy the second part (and all the rest that you do if there is more afterwards).

Honestly, in almost every game I've played, the players almost completely forgot the family exists, which makes it easy for them to disappear. The family is purposefully made to be unlikeable so that they'll head off on their own, only to get nabbed off-screen. If Mystery LLC is sitting around or focusing in the wrong area, I often have a family member in another part of the house die, loudly screaming, to spur the players forward to investigate that.

Sometimes, the players keep the NPCs around and that's cool too--I usually have Very Scary encounters target the family in that instance, kidnapping people right in front of the players.

Thanks for the response! I'll try to use them as a way to redirect the party if they are lost. I'm really curious to run the game for more than one group, it feels like it could have very different outcomes and experiences depending on the players.

I just use them as time markers. I kill one pretty quickly and then space the other 2 out. They were mostly ignored by my group until they died, and then they chase after the scream to find more clues. Also found it fun to spoil a trap Fred made with one of them.

Next time I run it however I think it might be more useful to use them as suspects. Maybe one gets ectoplasm on their shoes and ect. Red Herrings.

Hello
Do you think you could upload the maps as individual floors?
I am using a VTT and aligning the grids on the massive map is a massive pain.
Could you also do this with the DM maps?
Other than that my players are stoked to do this at Halloween and get all dressed up!

Glad to hear you're excited! I put out a new maps zip file that should have what you need. For what it's worth, I don't recommend trying to line up the grinds to a VTT - they will not likely match up. I recommend using the blank maps and getting it pretty close, as the exact sizes have very little bearing in the adventure. Or you can pick up the official VTT version on Fantasy Grounds--it'll be cheaper in the bundle! https://www.dmsguild.com/product/324155/A-Night-of-Fright-PDF--VTT-BUNDLE?src=also_purchased

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
