Rooster's Mansion

ADD TO WISHLIST >

You're given a simple job--drop off the vial of celestial blood, get the payment, and leave. You weren't expecting to be drawn into a mystery. Rooms filled with sand and desert creatures complicate things. It might by best to just find the crazy wizard, Rooster Dycus, so you can deliver the blood and get out of the mansion. There couldn't possibly be anything world ending happening here, could there?

Rooster's Mansion is a solo adventure for character levels 1-4. Besides the main adventure there are also options for a quick side quest.

This module can be played individually or with a Dungeon Master and one player.

This adventure seems half-baked so far: The only level and play information is in the subtitle? What does it mean for an adventure to be 'solo' for characterS of level 1-4? Is there some scaling mechanism for lower or higher level PC(s)?

Also, all of the initial quests are impossible - why is riding a horse a DC 20 Animal Handling roll? Each quest has easy or medium difficulty tasks that require DC 20 (very hard) checks. And then there's no indication of what you're supposed to do when you 'end your quest'. My PCs decided to try the sword in the stone, but couldn't pass the first test (DC 20 History), so I decided they had enough time to try a different quest. After that one proved impossible - DC 20 check to climb a tree?!? - I looked at the others and saw that they are all equally impossible (DC 20 Stealth as the first test on another, DC 20 History check (to identify a group irrelevant to tracking the perpetrator of the crime you're investigating) on the other.

Checking, I see that 'easy' is actually 10, 'medium' 15, and 20 is only 'hard'...but I'm still perplexed by the DCs of seemingly simple tasks in this adventure. Picking a lock - on a shutter, not something known for complex locks - is DC 25 (the actual 'very hard')? This is a solo adventure; even a PC with straight 18s and loads of skills is going to have a vanishingly small chance of doing this many skill checks with this high of DCs.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
