Mythic Encounters

ADD TO WISHLIST >

Disclaimer: According to our team of legal prophets and other assorted diviners, the authors of this tome are not accountable for any burden of destiny thrust upon characters. No, not even your bard Steve. Yes, our diviners told us you would say that. Watch the language please.

Alustriel Silverhand, Elminster Aumar, Varja Safahr… err, I mean... Blackstaff. Heroes from our history, all of them. You walk the hallowed halls of Conclave and stand before these giants—or at least their statues—and wonder what it takes to be a hero?

Listen, Silverymoon is full of those who would do good in the face of evil. If a gang of thieves worked their way into the city, our citizens would report them before they become a problem. Should a dragon fly overhead, you bet our guards would begin asking for every mage in the city for potions to help resist elemental energies. These are acts that require community: we all work together, or we die apart—and yet, heroes somehow rise above that rule.

So again, what does it take? Well, it takes a lot of bravery, a little bit of forethought, and a whole lot of luck. Those heroes didn’t just stand forward against a dragon, or against a gang of ill intent: they fought the towering giants of evil in the world—devils and demons of legend, planar threats, and frightening monstrosities.

I guess what I’m saying is this: to be a hero of mythic proportions, you’ll have to likely face your doom at the hands, fangs, claws, or gods-know-what else of equally mythic proportions.

— Arkhen the Icy, Conclave of Silverymoon

First introduced in Mythic Odyssey's of Theros, a Mythic Encounter is an optional rule you can apply to a creature which increases the difficulty. This takes the form of a Mythic Trait, which triggers most often on reducing the creature to 0 hit points. After which, it transforms, musters its strength, or exposes a new objective—extending the fight and unlocking new powers and abilities for the creature.

In Mythic Encounters, we bring that mechanic to all your old favorite creatures!
  • 36 monsters of CR 21+, updated to Mythic ProportionsCovering all CR 21+ creatures from the following official hardcovers (plus more):
    • Monster Manual
    • Volo’s Guide to Monsters
    • Mordenkainen’s Tome of Foes
    • Mordenkainen’s Fiend Folio Volume 1: Monsters Malevolent and Benign.
  • 16 brand new mythic spells & 67 mythic items, rewards for slaying the mythic beasts!
  • A brand-new Background: Mythic Ascendant, not all heroes are forged, some are born— foretold to accomplish great deeds!
  • An epic Boon: Boon of the Mythic Hero, learn your foes tactics and embody their fighting spirit! Gain new ways of interacting with Mythic Spells and Items, too!
  • What is a Mythic Encounter? Don’t worry! We include a short guide on how to create your own!
  • Fantastic Forgotten Realms lore! Not playing Forgotten Realms? Not an issue! Throw the lore out, we don’t mind!
  • Gorgeous art pieces, custom and licensed, by talented artists like Dante Ezio Cifaldi, Marcel Budde, Lluis Abadias, Leonardo Lambrecht, Nikki Dawes, and GeunBrush.

I have a hard time understanding Boon of the Mythic Hero, in particular the following line:

"You can now perform the Mythic Acts below until you are reduced to 0 hit points again, or complete a long rest."

OK, sounds simple however each Mythic Act says:

"Once you use this feature, you must complete a long rest before you can do so again."

My confusion: Initially it sounds like when you fall to 0HP and gain your temp hit points, you go into "mythic hero" mode and can perform Mythic Acts until you are reduced to 0 again OR take a long rest.

So why are the mythic acts saying you can use them once per long rest? Mythic Hero mode takes 10 days to recharge (i.e. drop to 0 and gain temp HP), meaning that you really and truly can only use your mythic acts every ten days no?

Or is it that after the first time you drop to 0 and gain temp HP, you can now perform mythic acts once per long rest? But can only gain temp...See more

Loving these mythic encounters, which I will be using in a campaign soon. I have a question though, for Orcus's statblock. His first mythic action, Nausea, states "Orcus chooses a creature within 120 feet. The next time that creature takes necrotic damage before the end of Orcus's next turn, it also becomes incapacitated." How long is this incapacitation intended to last? It'd be a bit OP to just be forever.

I was wondering the exact thing and came here to look for an answer on that. Since it doesn't state it specifically, I would go with 1 round until the end of the player's next turn.

bro, any chance you could make a mythic combat form for Tiamat? possibly create one for Bahamut and Sardior if you feel like making entirely new stat blocks?

I have it on good authority that there is someone working on another project that will include at least Tiamat and Bahamut, if not Sardior.

That would be quite the challenge! We've already done Claugiyliamatar, Iymrith, Klauth, Miirym, and Palarandusk - but there are a *whole lot more*. I wonder if you could do that many dragons AND keep things fresh and interesting?

I'm sure of it, Greenwood gave great descriptions of their personalities, making everyone of them unique. Take Nurvureem, she's a dragon like Klauth but she has a total different flavour. Every Wyrm of the North is very different from the other.

P.S. Another idea for a possible future book: Mythic Encounters: Darklords of Ravenloft.

Not trying to tell you what to do, mines are just ides that pop up in my brain, but with a Vistani official book in the works one can still hope. :D

Well there's five major chromatic "Great Wyrms" of the North, and you already have Green, Red, and Blue covered. The only two not mentioned are Iceclaws (but her child Icingdeath's statblock could be used for her) and Voaraghamanthar, or the Black Death.

I'd argue that Voaraghamanthar is worth getting its own mythic statblock due to some of the lore that surrounds....them.

I'd also really love to see Strahd, Baba Yaga (Lysaga), Tasha and Mordenkainen in a mythic form. Either way, this book was AMAZING and I loved it. Best DMsGuild purchase I've made this year if not ever.

Agreed! I personally think that some of the Wyrms of the North deserve stat blocks, considering they’re good detours from the typical HP sponge ancient dragons. If you ever consider having a small expansion, I’d be more than willing to show my players some different draconic antagonists :)

Query: was there a reason for leaving off Bards from the Mythic Spells game? All the other full casters get at least one…

Same query for Paladin and Ranger, given Artificer's inclusion and some of them being of levels that halfcasters can actually reach…

There was no specific decision made to leave any classes off. It was all about theme.

Short of possibly Voice of the Undead being a Bard spell, I didn't feel as though any of these quite fit those classes.

We'd considered removing the Artificer entirely from the list to not have that disparity between Artificer/Paladin/Ranger, but Trebuchet makes so much sense for the Artificer and was actually designed with that class in mind.

Thanks everyone who has purchased and made this a Gold Best Seller!

We just released version 1.02 with the following changes:

- Table of Contents now shows the original creature's name in brackets (on creatures where we took a generic creature and made it specific)
- Icingdeath's third lair action now correctly prones creatures who fail
- Klauth's immunity to Cold has been shifted to resistance, as it was supposed to be
- Zariel's immunity to radiant damage from her Mythic trait has been removed, to ensure she is actually killable.

Cheers!

Thank you for the update!

If you don't mind, there's a couple of other errors I found which you may wish to address for the next one :)

On page 125, one of the mythic items is called "Reigns of Chaos", although it should be "Reins" based on its description being like a horse's reins. I do concede though that this might have been wordplay.

Also, on page 12, the section "Adamanstor's Lair" says "When on its home plane, the elemental's lair...", when Adamanstor is a Monstrosity.

I enjoy a lot of flavor and mechanics a lot and thank you for the inspirations thru this material.

About Zariel:

Blessing of Avernus: ...While she possesses these hit points, she gains immunity to cold, fire and radiant damage...

RAW does this make her unkillable due to her Regeneration trait?

Hi Jiaren

You're absolutely right. It's been fixed, the radiant damage immunity has been removed. This was a goof on our part - we had no intention of Zariel being unkillable.

What I noticed with a lot of monsters is that after their Mythic Trait activates, they gain Temporary Hit Points while being left with only one actual Hit Point. This means they are vulnerable to any spells or attacks that rely on the targets actual health which would kill them in one hit. These include Power Word Kill, Power Word Stun, and even a 1st level Sleep which don't require a save an only come into effect when regarding the target's HP. In a tweet by Jeremy Crawford, he confirmed that Hit Points and Temporary Hit Points do not stack when regarding such spells and attacks.

I am curious, is this playtested? I am wondering how players feel about the mythic creatures regaining their hit points and having to fight them "again". Do the players at that tier melt the creatures that fast or would it be a slog?

It is the same mechanic introduced in the official hardcover Mythic Odysses of Theros, which was playtested.

Note, you aren't just having to kill the target twice in most cases. More often than not, the entire dynamic of the fight changes.

I wouldn't be throwing this type of encounter at my players every time we meet for a game, but once or twice per campaign might be just enough to really drive the 'level' that these creatures are at home, compared to their more mundane counterparts.

I plan on buying this bad boy soon, but first, have you based the abilities heavily on lore, or if you don't mind a more specific question, what device did you use in theming your abilities. Was it purely mechanic based, or was lore and thematic more pressing? Whilst I'm more fond of thematic abilities than those chosen purely for mechanics, or chosen with less theme in mind In favour of better mechanics, don't worry about dissuading me, as I already plan on getting the book regardless.

But first, might I suggest limiting this book's, or at the very least future sequels in this vain's preview to a smaller size? It seems there is quite a lot of the book available, and while that's great, and it may seem odd that I'm complaining about free content, I feel like you could lose sells to those that find the content they wanted in said preview, even if that kind of transparency is very good for sells, as for instance, I am more confident of my future purchase because of it, it could be at least a bit smaller...See more

Hi Skylar!

When lore was available, we've used lore to determine the way Mythics work and what features the creatures have. Such as Ygorl summoning his dragon pet, Maelestor Rex invoking his fiendish pact, and Iymrith becoming a weavewraith.

When lore was not available, we created it :)

Regarding the preview, if people wish to use the preview instead of purchasing the book that is fine by me. We created the full preview so that people could buy with confidence, and it has not noticably impacted sales negatively at all. Quite the contrary, we've enjoyed the #1 position at the Guild for over a week and continue to have strong sales. Although we certainly appreciate the concern for our bottom line, we'd much rather people buy the book confident that they will enjoy its content, than buy it and feel regret that it wasn't what they'd expected.

Cheers!

In this book you only go as low as CR 21 for mythic monsters while in Theros there's a CR 17 Legendary Medusa. Do you have plans in a sequel to expand to lower CR Mythical monsters? If so how low will you go?

We actually grabbed one CR 16 creature (Phoenix) and bumped it to CR 21, and did a few CR 20 dragons, but as a design goal we're trying to stick to CR 21+, as we feel that's where Mythic really shines.

I do know a certain Eberron character, CR 15, who will be getting this treatment... King of Swords? Duke of Daggers? Lady of Blades? Ah, who can remember...

Hi,

Great product, I really like the ideas and quality. Looking at Klauth, he has immunity to Cold (as well as Fire, which is standard for a Red Dragon) and we're pointed to his equipment (Ring of Cold Resistance). Is it intended this is an immunity, rather than a resistance to Cold damage (which is what the ring provides)?

Thanks,

No, that is an error - Cold should be listed as a Resistance, not an immunity.

I'm a little confused why Tiamat's and Bahamut's artifacts require the gems of their dragons. So becoming the champion of them requires killing the dragons that follow them?

The gems are a reward for defeating them, but they were also entrusted to those Dragons to protect.

Bahamut gave his gems to the Metallics, and Tiamat to the Chromatics. While defeating them does reward you with the gem because you find it in their hoard, you could also get it by working with the dragon.

Perhaps a metallic dragon would even reward you with their gem in exchange for a chromatic gem, for example.

Does that make sense?

I understand the intent, but in my games I'll probably have ancient chromatics have the gem of their metallic twin as the centerpiece of their hoard. Then again my players lean a bit murder hobo at times so I have to make sure they don't have a conceivable reason to hunt down good creatures for the "greater good". Thanks for the clarification though.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books.
