Obstacles, Obstructions, and Ordeals

ADD TO WISHLIST >

You have managed to reach the innermost sanctum within the tomb and have claimed the lost artifact. Suddenly, you hear a rumbling noise behind you as the door you entered slams shut. A long hallway on the opposite end of the room is now your only exit. A large pit filled with spikes must be crossed before entering the hallway. Beyond that is a spinning tunnel filled with flames. In the distance you see large blades swinging back and forth like pendulums. If you’re going to get out of here alive with your treasure, you’re going to have to somehow survive these obstacles.

The life of an adventurer is filled with risk and reward. Hostile creatures, deadly traps, and hidden dangers lurk around every corner. Sometimes the obstacle may be out in the open, but that doesn't make it any less challenging. Spike pits, pendulum blades, and gauntlets of shooting arrows let the hero know what they're up against, but they still must find a way to overcome the obstacle.

Obstacles, Obstructions, and Ordeals provides a collection of obstacles and hazards that can be placed into any adventure or campaign. This product also contains mechanics and rules for building obstacle courses from the encounters and scoring them in a competitive manner. Dungeon Masters can place their players within a challenging series of obstacles to escape from a collapsing cavern, earn their freedom from an evil wizard, or compete to earn the title of Faerûnian Nimble Warrior Champion in an arena filled with thousands of spectators.

This product contains:

  • 15 original obstacles for use in your adventures, including:

    • Pendulum Blades

    • Arrow Crossfire

    • Minotaur Run

    • Fire Walk

    • And more!

  • Rules and mechanics for connecting the encounters in a competitive obstacle course event.

  • Instructions on how to scale the difficulty of the obstacles for characters of all levels.

  • Story hooks for working obstacle course events into your campaign.

  • 3 different obstacle course configurations, each with their own theme.

  • Optional “Raising The Stakes” sidebars for making obstacles more challenging and dangerous.

  • 2 unique magical items that can be awarded to players for winning the obstacle course competition.

Bought it for the mechanics and some inspiration, it does not disappoint! Great layout, well written and clearly explained.
However, I would advise anyone using this to spend a little time adjusting the DCs, they are far too low even for a 1st level party, DC9-12. Most characters interested in this are going to have pretty good dex and str, probably athletics and acrobatics proficiency too.

Hi Jason! Thanks for the comment and kind words!
Regarding the DC numbers, we went back and forth a bit on whether we should make them higher and truly target the obstacles towards the type of the classes that would have high numbers on physical skills, or lower them a bit so classes that aren't so strong or agile have a chance. And, although the image of a wizard repeatedly failing to climb a wall may be amusing, we chose to keep the numbers lower to give those classes a fighting chance. Your suggestion is a good one of course. If DMs want the obstacles to be more physically challenging, increasing the DC upwards is a perfectly viable option!

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
