0-Level Rules: Compleat Meat

ADD TO WISHLIST >

Prepare for the thrill of being average or worse.

Role playing games have a proud history of “hopeless characters,” dating back to the early days of Dungeons & Dragons. While most role players prefer acting the part of heroic characters, some relate better to average lunks, who, if suddenly thrust into a dangerous battle, would almost assuredly die a horrible death.

Compleat Meat outlines 10 different options for creating 0-level characters, inspired by the unforgiving character-creation processes of yore, challenging the notion that fantasy heroes must be proficient in anything but pushing a broom. Prepare for the thrill of being average or worse, where the odds of survival are sharply stacked against you. Inside you'll find:

  • A 1d100 table of substandard zero-level jobs and starter classes.
  • 10 rules variants for creating mediocre characters.
  • A critical miss table.

“Compleat,” not “Complete?”
“Compleat” is a nod to The Compleat Adventurer, The Compleat Alchemist and The Compleat Spell Caster, a set of 1983 role-playing game supplements published by Bard Games and tailored for use with Advanced Dungeons & Dragons.

“Compleat” is also a tribute to The Compleat Strategiest, an amazing tabletop game franchise with locations in New York City and King of Prussia, Pa. Both are still accepting online orders in the midst of COVID-19 and need your support more than ever.

This is awesome. I would have paid money for this. I didn't, but I would have. I love this kind of thing - weakening characters when narratively appropriate! Thank you for making such great mechanics!

This guide is the best thing I've seen since Role Master came out with common sense crits and fumbles etc. Rock on Man!

I wasn't expecting much from this, but man I was surprised. The table at the end is great and my group is excited to try out some 0-level characters. Writing in this is funny too!!

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
