A Forger's Guide to Waterdeep (Skullport and Barovia too!)

Have you wanted assets to build a forgery scenario into your adventures, wanted more realistic wax seals for your missives, or wanted your character to become a master forger?  If so, this might be for you. Intended for both Dungeon Masters and players, this document covers all the major organizations found in Waterdeep - Dragonheist, Waterdeep - Dungeon of the Mad Mage, and Curse of Strahd (with numerous other organizations covered in legacy Forgotten Realms publications). This publication includes:

  • A summary of the rules of forgery and forging equipment.
  • 180 unique seals listed below with PNG files (plus a couple other failed forgeries and a variant for RP purposes), which can be printed out on notes, titles, deeds, orders, whatever.
  • A Master Forger NPC.
  • A hook to get a character down the path of becoming a Master Forger.

Waterdeep (and Skullport):

  • 23 Factions: Arcane Brotherhood, Bregan D'aerthe, Emerald Enclave (including Instars subfaction), Gray Hands (including Force Grey and Deep Delvers subfactions), Harpers, Iron Ring, Keepers, Knights of the Shield, Kraken Society, Lords' Alliance, Order of the Gauntlet, Red Sashes, Red Wizards of Thay, Sha'Sal Khou, Shadow Thieves, Tel Teukiira, Unseen, Xanathar Guild, Zhentarim (including Doom Raiders subfaction).
  • 15 Temples: Gond, Helm, Ilmater, Lathander, Mystra, Oghma, Selune, Sune, Tempus, Tymora, Tyr, and Umbrelee. As well as the Holyhands House, Temple of the Seldarine, and the Shrines of Nature.
  • 78 Noble Houses: Everyone from Adarbrent to Zun.
  • 6 Dwarven Clans: Battlehammer, Blackbanner, Bucklebar, Foehammer, Horn, and Stoneshield.
  • 44 Trade Guilds: Everything from the Apothecaries & Physicians Guild to the Wheelwrights' Guild.
  • 2 Cities: Skullport, Waterdeep.
  • 5 Governing Bodies: Lords of Waterdeep, Waterdeep City Guard, Waterdeep City Watch, Waterdeep Griffon Cavalry, Waterdeep Navy.

Barovia (including as a bonus):

  • 2 Factions: Keepers of the Feather, Order of the Silver Dragon.
  • 5 Houses: Durst, Martikov, Strahd, Vallakovich, Wachter.

6/29/21 update: Added 6 dwarven clan metallic foil seals which could either be stamped on weapons/armor or included as a metal foil seal on official diplomatic documents.

3/7/21 update: Added several more wax seals.

2/24/21 update: Added the remaining Waterdeep trade guilds, several more factions, several temples, and many of the legacy noble houses, as well as several seals from Skullport. I also changed some of the previously included guild images to better match each guilds' livery description, changed a few of the previously included house seals, and changed the Watchful Order of Magists and Protectors from the faction-styled seal to a guild-styled seal. I also reorganized the seals so each type is in its own zipfile (houses, guilds, factions, etc).

Much appreciated! Any chance you could add high contrast versions(perhaps without wax) of each? I am using many of them in Fantasy Grounds as map icons

First, thanks for your interest!

For noble houses, I used James Welch's collection here: https://www.dmsguild.com/product/286841/Waterdeep-Nobles-Heraldry-Stock-Art (although I did change some of the colors to make them appear better when converted into a seal).

For most of the other 100ish images though, it'd actually be a LOT of work as I didn't make the images with a non-converted design in mind. For many of them, I either drew myself or pieced together from free clipart for the purpose of being converted. The raw images aren't up to the quality anyone is looking for. As an example, here's a before and after comparison of The Splendid Order of Armorers, Locksmiths, and Finesmiths:

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
