100 Books to Find on a Ravenloft Bookshelf (Fantasy Grounds)

ADD TO WISHLIST >

Books can be an important source of knowledge. They can contain needed or valuable information or clues, or they may have value as treasure. There are other books that are less valuable. They may be sensationalist, fabrications, dated or of dubious if any accuracy. This supplement has 100 less important books that can be added to flesh out a Ravenloft bookshelf, covering such as history, travel, myths and outright speculation, as well as a few intended as pure entertainment.

How accurate any of these books are is up to the Dungeon Master, as is whether or not they have any game value other than worth. With books still being a comparatively rare item in fantasy settings most of these books will be worth a small amount of money, with 1-6 gp being the suggested range. Copies encountered may often have been tampered with by various darklords, aiming to spread misinformation about themselves, or possibly improving the accuracy of the information contained if it covers an enemy. Mere possession of some of the books could cause potentially fatal problems in some domains.

This is the Fantasy Grounds version of the supplement. For the PDF version, click here.

Here are some sample results:

  • Missing Markovia by Milmaren Senseir (A lengthy explanation as to why the largest island in the Sea of Sorrows is actually Markovia, relocated from where the Shadow Rift is; contains some very dubious scholarship)
  • Murderous Turmoil: Gabrielle Aderre and Lord Barkholis by Lengyel Sándor (How Gabrielle Aderre murdered Lord Barkholis of Invidia and the turmoil that resulted from this)
  • Mysteries of the Vistani by Molnár Pál (A completely inaccurate book that accuses the Vistani of all sorts of things and appears to be designed to stir up hatred for them)
  • Night Terrors: The Nightmare Court by Cordia Gellius (Stories about the Nightmare Court in the Nightmare Lands from those who claim to have encountered them, and survived)
  • On the Nature of the Vampire Illithids of Bluetspur by Lou Asselineau (Pure speculation about the origins of the vampire illithids and their powers, with nothing concrete to back any of the speculations up)

These books are items with title, author and short description. There are a lot of great books here and a lot with some kind of tie to Ravenloft. Great for Ravenloft bookshelves. [...]

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
