Just picked this up the other day and it looks great! From reading the introduction it seems like a rogue would be a great fit story-wise; however, rogues seem to be tough for these solo campaigns (especially level 1) as combat usually turns into your character getting swarmed in melee, not the best place for a rogue, especially without cunning action (lvl 2). Ranger seems to be a good option for solo play as they are good fighters and have some healing and spellcasting. But I always play ranger or Druid and would like to try something else.

TLDR- is a rogue viable for this solo series or would it be an exercise in frustration?

Common question!

Rogue's drawback is that Sneak Attack won't work as often--there aren't as many combats with allies on the battlefield (though there are some). On the other hand, there are a lot of scenarios where rogue skills and features work well or unlock special options, like Stealth and Thieves' Cant. Ranger is a good middle ground between rogue and fighter.

Beta testers played a variety of classes; barbarians, fighters, a sorcerer, wizards, and... rogues. It's doable with any class, though combat-classes are often safer. I'd recommend trying whatever class appeals to you and then try again with a different class if it gets frustrating.

EDIT: Rangers really excel in Book 2.

Wow, thanks for the quick response, I usually wait days/weeks for responses on some of these discussions. A rogue it is! I’ll just have to be really careful in combat until I get some levels and abilities. If it kicks my butt and becomes frustrating I’ll just roll with my go-to dual-wielding ranger. This series looks fantastic, I hope you’re getting enough interest to complete all seven books. Keep up the good work!

Re-playing this adventure now, in hopes that EPA 02 is coming in the not-too-distant future. :)

ps. 2-153's link to 2-128, s/lose/loose/
pps. I don't know how difficult it would be, but a version without background (or several shades lighter) would be much easier to read on my Kindle.

Thanks again for a fun adventure!

Thanks for the comment!

EPA 02 is fully outlined, mostly diagrammed, and mostly scaffolded with shorthand. The full prose is about half written in first-draft form (258 pages thus far).

I'm looking into a host of reader-compatibility issues, including a text-to-voice version, but getting the second book out is the main priority. Visual accessibility is one of the reasons I use a large font, but I haven't done much else in that direction yet.

PS: That "lose" will be "loose" in the upcoming iteration, version 1.42.

Great--all good news!

I can already say thanks for using a larger font size--if you had used any smaller, I wouldn't be able to read it at all on the B&W Kindle without zooming.

Thanks again. :)

I was blown away by how lengthy, detailed and compelling this was. Very much looking forward to the next one, assuming it's still in the works!

First two tries I got eaten by a monster with pretty good AC, annoying resistances, and regeneration. Third time, I hit it with a Catapult spell before it could do anything.

Something I noticed is that (assuming I didn't miss a 100gp pearl somewhere in ch1) in order to be able to identify anything, you need to have the spell, roll for gold instead of using starting equipment, roll high, and spend 100gp of it on a pearl to use as the material component. Seems pretty unlikely! No option to just risk attuning to these items blind and finding out the hard way what an item does. Am I missing something here?

The option to do that is in the standard rules (ID one magic item during a short rest) and there are rest options at various points. In chapter 2, the player can rest frequently, but the tradeoff is that the chapter is timed...

The identify spell is the fastest way to reveal an item’s properties. Alternatively, a character can focus on one magic item during a short rest, while being in physical contact with the item. At the end of the rest, the character learns the item’s properties, as well as how to use them. Potions are an exception; a little taste is enough to tell the taster what the potion does. (DMG ch. 7)

Can someone who bought it or the creator tell me what level this solo adventure is designed for? And can it be modified for 2 pcs?

The story is for a single 1st-level character.

There is currently no guidance in the book for adding a second character sheet. However, I've played it with two characters by:

1) Having only one character make each roll (a rule that's already stated in the book)

2) Doubling the number of Medium-size or Small-size creatures in each fight

3) In fights where the sidekick (an NPC supplied in the story) is present (and controllable by the player), don't add more creatures; just don't have the sidekick participate in the fight. (The second PC takes the sidekick's place in the battle.)

I developed these rules prior to release but did not have enough time to fully test them. If you do try it with two PCs, please drop a note here to tell us how it went.

So Far so Good. I wasn't sure what to expect, but wanted to scratch the D&D itch between group sessions. This is definitely of a different vein than the last Solo adventure I tried, and while it does have a choose your own adventure flavor, it is so incredibly detailed that it is obvious that a lot of thought and creativity went into its composition. I'm currently on Chapter 4, which introduces sidekicks, and to date, there have been some harrowing events. I love the use of skill checks, sometimes the battle blocks have been a little confusing, as I can be hesitant to read too far, but then I will read something afterwards, that would've changed the dynamics of the encounter, so have replayed a couple of battles (and took a beating in the process - there are some really great encounter modifiers). I do wish there was a Roll20 compatible version (even if it was just a map pack for the various battle maps) but I am enjoying it none-the-less. I can't wait to see where this ends up taking my character...See more

I'm so glad you're enjoying the adventure!

The whole thing is first level. The end notes in chapter 4 will walk you through the bookkeeping, going to 2nd level and handling downtime actions.

Still in development. It's about two months from finished! Our schedule is one book every four months until all seven books of the series are published.

Late Reply: I've added a separate map pack. I plan to include one in each release for the rest of the series. Thanks for the suggestion!

Any chance there will be a print copy? I was part of the playtest and would find it easier if it was in a physical form rather than pdf

Print options are only available by invitation. There is no longer an application process. To get an invitation, we'd have to hit a higher level of popularity than we've currently reached!

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
