Elminster Aumar, Chosen of Mystra, invites you to explore the grandest repository of knowledge in the Forgotten Realms: Candlekeep, the Library Fortress! The Sage of Shadowdale has assembled this companion to help seekers of wisdom navigate the Castle of Tomes. Be warned! Elminster requests that you bring a suitable entrance gift, lest you be turned away at the front gates.

This book is the definitive guide to Candlekeep and includes the first-ever comprehensive map of Candlekeep. Dungeon Masters can find a history and overview of Candlekeep developed in consultation with Ed Greenwood, creator of the Forgotten Realms, new variant rules, 26 new magic items, and 11 new creatures found in the library fortress. Players can create characters from four new subclass options and 34 new spells, and embark on stories involving the Castle of Tomes and the lore held within. Elminster’s Candlekeep Companion also includes an adventure for use in Baldur’s Gate: Descent into Avernus, written by M.T. Black.

Knowledge should not be kept behind walls or gates. Therefore we have included our entire product in the "Full Preview." We hope you support us and our project so we can make many more!

(Map by Marco Bernardini, each purchase includes this map at 300 DPI!)

Chapter 1 provides four new subclass options for creating Candlekeep-inspired characters.

Bard - College of Destiny: By virtue of prescience, they navigate the twisting roads of luck and fate.

Cleric - Prophecy Domain: These oracles are blessed and burdened with overwhelming visions of the future.

Monk - Way of the Avowed Preserver: They swear to protect their chosen library or archive, no matter the cost.

Wizard - Academic Lore: In the classrooms and dining halls of magical schools, these students and professors strive to master their Art.

Chapter 2 presents a general overview of Candlekeep, such as requirements for entry, major locations, and the monastic order known as the Avowed.

Chapter 3 includes an in-depth look at the Great Library of Candlekeep, its rules, and the books contained therein.

Chapter 4 details ideas for creating Candlekeep adventures, and includes an adventure by M.T. Black, for use in Baldur’s Gate: Descent into Avernus.

Chapter 5 contains 26 new magic items and 34 new spells found in Candlekeep and its vaults, including magical books, tomes, and grimoires.

Chapter 6 provides 11 new monsters and NPCs, such as bookworms, tome guardians, and Miirym, the legendary Sentinel Wyrm.

This book is gorgeously arranged, with formatting that rivals official hardcovers, and Bernardini's map of Candlekeep is utterly jaw-dropping. The content is thoroughly researched and expertly written, and the cut-in excerpts from Candlekeep's many tomes is an inspired touch. It's some of the best the Guild has to offer; it even has a disclaimer like the official hardcovers!

Hey folks, I have found some mistakes in the NPCs I believe. Pg 44 I believe the Otter Wizard should be called Traxigor not Traxigorican. Also it is Thavius Kreeg not Thavius Klegg, see page 45

The above is using Decent into Avernus as the main NPC reference.

Hello! I was reading through the spells and I got to some weird wording on page 73 for the description of Warning Shot. In the first paragraph, after hitting one or more creatures with a ranged attack you can "claim an unoccupied space of your choice within 5 feet of one target that attack." My concern is that I'm of two minds here and I can't decide on what its supposed to mean.

1) it says that when a creature that was hit by a ranged attack by the caster makes an attack roll against (undefined target) the caster can claim an unoccupied space within 5 feet of the attacking creature

OR

2) The sentence is a typo, supposed to read as "claim an unoccupied space of your choice within 5 feet of one target OF that attack."

I'd appreciate a clarification! :D

I've haven't finished reading all of it, but I was definitely interested in this product because a campaign I just started is semi structured around a huge library and this seems...See more

Hi Lucas. I wrote most of the original drafts of these spells, sorry that error snuck through during the process. It is definitely option #2. The sentence should read "claim an unoccupied space of your choice within 5 feet of one target of that attack".

Any chance to see a version of this on Roll20? I already see it is available on Fantasy Grounds.
Thanks!

Would love to see a Fantasy Grounds .mod with this. And, I did a quick perusal of the book itself - it looks to be of FANTASTIC quality, and I love the fact that Ed Greenwood has contributed to the work. (I recently read "The Herald" and seeing the map brings it to life even more!)

If by chance someone does convert it to FG for you all, I'll grab it, and the PDF both. I see that you have one adventure - but would also LOVE to see a few more adventures related to Candlekeep, and more maps (of major buildings, etc). And who knows, perhaps a faction, based from there and/or some factions that use Candlekeep in their political plays. (As an ally, as a refuge, as an asset to be subverted or taken over...) Yeah, yeah, I know I could do a lot of that myself. But I don't think I could do the FG Mods.. not enough time!

Great job on this and thanks for such a large preview. The artwork is amazing!

Well, it's a well written document, but doesn't come close to being balanced across much of unified 5e balance or play. Can't see this getting picked up by any communities or organizations in a big way.

Feels like a big spell caster power trip document especially with the items and spells that far outstrip and out scale most of the standard 5e options.

Overall 3/10, read before I thought I might buy it, and I won't be buying it.

Hello, I wrote most of these subclasses, items, and spells. Would you like to share some more specific feedback? I'll admit that some hasty changes late in the process created a few places of concern, but overall those are a small minority, and I am curious if your perceptions would match my own. In fact, many of these player options have been fine-tuned via feedback and playtesting from earlier versions in previous products, although many others are new. Can you talk about areas where you see problems?

Also, your reference to whether this product would be "picked up by any communities or organizations" has piqued my curiosity. Can you explain that a bit more?

The spells look fine to me, but any specific feedback is appreciated and will be treated seriously. It's worth pointing out that Jeremy has converted something like 500 spells to 5e from previous editions, and has written countless original spells. He has probably published more 5e spells than anyone else on the planet - I have a lot of faith in his abilities in this area!

If the entire product is in the "full preview" (thanks for that), is there a way to remove the SAMPLE FILE from the document or is this something that happens by default for previews on DMSGUILD?

The reason it is watermarked is so people don't pirate it.

Hi Frederik,

The entire product is viewable in the Full Preview so you are able to see everything contained within Elminster's Candlekeep Companion, allowing you to assess the quality of our project before committing to a purchase. If you do buy it, your download would not have "Sample" written on any of the pages.
Customer avatar
Vis S April 28, 2020 9:30 pm UTC
Yes, the Sample File watermark is automatic to my knowledge. Sellers can decide how little or much of the file is visible in the "full preview" - some, like, in this case, are happy to make the full document available as a "preview", which basically just means that buyers are doing so to remove the watermark and support the creators.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
