Elminster Aumar, Chosen of Mystra, invites you to explore the grandest repository of knowledge in the Forgotten Realms: Candlekeep, the Library Fortress! The Sage of Shadowdale has assembled this companion to help seekers of wisdom navigate the Castle of Tomes. Be warned! Elminster requests that you bring a suitable entrance gift, lest you be turned away at the front gates.

This book is the definitive guide to Candlekeep and includes the first-ever comprehensive map of Candlekeep. Dungeon Masters can find a history and overview of Candlekeep developed in consultation with Ed Greenwood, creator of the Forgotten Realms, new variant rules, 26 new magic items, and 11 new creatures found in the library fortress. Players can create characters from four new subclass options and 34 new spells, and embark on stories involving the Castle of Tomes and the lore held within. Elminster’s Candlekeep Companion also includes an adventure for use in Baldur’s Gate: Descent into Avernus, written by M.T. Black.

Knowledge should not be kept behind walls or gates. Therefore we have included our entire product in the "Full Preview." We hope you support us and our project so we can make many more!

Chapter 1 provides four new subclass options for creating Candlekeep-inspired characters.

Bard - College of Destiny: By virtue of prescience, they navigate the twisting roads of luck and fate.

Cleric - Prophecy Domain: These oracles are blessed and burdened with overwhelming visions of the future.

Monk - Way of the Avowed Preserver: They swear to protect their chosen library or archive, no matter the cost.

Wizard - Academic Lore: In the classrooms and dining halls of magical schools, these students and professors strive to master their Art.

Chapter 2 presents a general overview of Candlekeep, such as requirements for entry, major locations, and the monastic order known as the Avowed.

Chapter 3 includes an in-depth look at the Great Library of Candlekeep, its rules, and the books contained therein.

Chapter 4 details ideas for creating Candlekeep adventures, and includes an adventure by M.T. Black, for use in Baldur’s Gate: Descent into Avernus.

Chapter 5 contains 26 new magic items and 34 new spells found in Candlekeep and its vaults, including magical books, tomes, and grimoires.

Chapter 6 provides 11 new monsters and NPCs, such as bookworms, tome guardians, and Miirym, the legendary Sentinel Wyrm.

This book is gorgeously arranged, with formatting that rivals official hardcovers, and Bernardini's map of Candlekeep is utterly jaw-dropping. The content is thoroughly researched and expertly written, and the cut-in excerpts from Candlekeep's many tomes is an inspired touch. It's some of the best the Guild has to offer; it even has a disclaimer like the official hardcovers!

I think I found a typo / error for Barbed Construct. It says it has a casting time of 1 minute and a duration of up to 1 minute. I think that would make it practically unusable in combat. So, either It's casting time should be listed as 1 action, or it's duration should be significantly longer.

Are there encounter maps available somewhere for the grove/hell gate in the Descent into Avernus section?

This product does not include any maps for that encounter. Apologies if that caused any issues.

Are there descriptions (or at least names) of each of the buildings that compose the Great Library as part of this product?

EDIT: Downloaded the sample full preview. It appears not. ;-(

I think I caught a spell design typo. Larloch's Lunar Lunacy has a range of 30 feet. It says a moon swims into view and each creature within range has to make a save. Within range of what? Yourself? The moon? The moon doesn't dictate where its placed. It just comes into view? Is the range supposed to be sight? Is the moon supposed to be placed at a point you see? If what is affected is determined where the moon is placed, should the moon have a radii of effect?

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
