DotMM Companion: Complete Edition

ADD TO WISHLIST >

One Companion to Rule Them All

The Complete Edition of the Dungeon of the Mad Mage Companion is your one-stop guide for running and fleshing out Dungeon of the Mad Mage! It contains every chapter written for the Companion over these last seventeen months, which consists of the following:

  • Halaster's Game. The Companion rewrites Halaster Blackcloak into a deranged game show host whose program, Dungeon of the Mad Mage, is broadcast across the Multiverse! It's this insidious game that the adventurers find themselves trapped in! (Note: the Companion is still a hefty resource for DMs that don't adopt this element.)
  • DM Notes. Quick notes for every chapter, summarizing the level and listing the highlights.
  • Variants Galore. Where something could be polished, or where it ought to have been abolished, the Companion provides you variants you can use—be it a rewritten narrative, new foes, or alternate encounters.
  • Magic Items. To spare yourself the time of leafing through the Dungeon Master's Guide, the magic items found in these chapters have been included.
  • Monster Statblocks. You guessed it: the monsters used throughout these levels have been compiled and their statblocks reproduced for your convenience.

FAQ

1. Twenty bucks? Are you mad?
By buying the Complete Edition, you're saving $17 dollars (if you were to buy every chapter à la carte) or $5 (if you were to buy every bundle).

2. What's the difference between the Complete Edition and its constituent parts?
There's no difference other than a fresh coat of paint and another round of editing (which will be rolled out to individual chapters in the coming days).

3. What's the breakdown of contents?
The first 280 pages consist of the Companion's content. The other 120 are magic item descriptions and monster statblocks.

4. Can I still make use of this guide if I don't run Halaster as a game show host?
You absolutely can! By modifying dialogue, you can scrub away that element but keep the Mad Mage's other antics and quests.

5. Where's the print-on-demand option?
DM's Guild has recently slowed down their print-on-demand catalogue for only hand-selected titles. As of right now, the Companion is not being considered as one. If this chaps your nips, please vent your frustration to DMs Guild on Twitter (@DMs_Guild).

6. I've already bought the Companion's chapters!

If you've already bought the Companion's five bundles or twenty-five chapters, please send me a screenshot of your DMs Guild order history (no personal information included) with your DMs Guild email so I can send you a complimentary copy. I can be reached on Twitter (@Wyatt_Trull) or via email (wyatt@wyatttrull.com).

Absolutely the best. Allows for 4th wall DM action. I loved it and interweaved it with storm king's thunder.

It can be run alone as a super cool offbeat but horrific module. 5/5 + bonus points for completing the level.

Hello. There is a flaw in the pdf. In effect the description of Frigid Water is incomplete. Would it be possible to send me the description of the effect? Congratulations on the excellent material.

Is it possible to get the editable files/Markdown files you used to create the PDF?

Hello,
I am heavily considering to buy this but I have one question. If I intend to run the game the way it is written in the companion, will I have to read the original book as well as the companion or is the companion enough in order to run it well?

The Companion does not replace the actual module; you'll need Dungeon of the Mad Mage.

Dungeon of the Mad Mage was a campaign I wanted to run so badly but upon reading the module, its problems became apparent to me and I questioned if I even wanted to attempt it anymore. There is when I found this companion. Not only does it serve as a detailed guide for the module, it overhauls the adventure by fixing many of its glaring issues with introduces one of the most unique stories one could hope for in D&D. One year and 17 levels later, this adventure stands as one of my personal favorites and a favorite among my players. I owe this all to this companion. Well done, lad. Well done.

I’m loving the companion! My party is on level 4 and I thought it would be fun to add an antipathy/sympathy (specifically sympathy) regional effect onto the grotto of madness to enhance/explain why creatures are compelled by the whispers to go into the grotto.

On Level 4, encounters 5 through 10 appear to be missing. This may be on purpose, so just pointing it out in case it's a mistake.

Have the first 2 as well as the whole pdf .Happy to wait on the rest, strangely enough just finished the return of the thirteen, used other sources for Eilistraee,as well as the bawdy nymph and other area's of ill repute.non of my players in all their time playing had been to skull port, now like most DM's games they are intent on exploring all the nooks and crannies of the place so thank you for giving us a starting point for that place.

The boys at Grim Press are hard at work on the last three bundles, and every time I ask them about it, they bill me an extra $25 "consultancy fee" so we just have to hope they finish soon

Oh, come on now Wyatt - we waived the fee last time... ;)

Mark - the bundles are being worked on. Please feel free to join our discord for updates (and gently prod us to work faster!):

Hi there, I really enjoy using the Companion for my game. There is a lot of content in the pdf, but it doesn't have chapter bookmarks. These would make it much easier to navigate the 401 pages. Could you possibly add these chapters? That would be amazing.

This is strange; I added bookmarks in the last update. When did you purchase your copy?

Sorry for the late reply, I must have been using a version of the pdf from before that update. I redownloaded it and the chapter bookmarks are there! Thank you for replying back then, and of course for making the Companion.

Any compatibility with Roll20? Or would I have to add the handouts longhand? I don't mind either way I was just wondering. Thanks!

As a DM making a champaign centered on Eilistraee and having the Promenade of the Dark Maiden be a focal point of the characters' travels, I really hope you detailed the Promenade in this bundle. I know the original DotMM didn't and put a Dwarf church instead of the Promenade, but come on Greenwood himself said the church of Eilistraee took it back. Either way, I'm gonna buy it considering that my players might get too curious and explore Undermountain even if there is a portal from the Promenade directly to her sister church in Waterdeep, the Dancing Grove.

Hey, sorry to disappoint you but I didn't even consider Eilistraee at all. I wrote a description for her shrine on the level of Undermountain it appears on, but that's about it.

Hello! I was wondering how long you'd think it'd be till you release an FG version. I'm not in a rush, but I'll probably be moving from Dragon Heist to Dotmm in 3 months or so.

Really helpful companion! Chapter 1 is great in so many ways - story hooks, adventuring parties, gates with the map.
Skullport is really fleshed out and filled with interesting quests.

"Halaster's Game" idea sounds like not the right thing for my campaign, so it's good that narrative text has variants without it throughout the companion.

Overall, really amazing job and must-buy for any DotMM DM!

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
