D&D Solo Adventure: Drums at Daggerford

ADD TO WISHLIST >

5e Solo Gamebooks presents Drums at Daggerford, the fifth in our continual series of solo adventures set in the Forgotten Realms. This quest enables you to experience D&D without a dungeon master! Simply roll up a level 5 PC and get playing.

Fantasy Grounds version available here.

Drums at Daggerford is the way you must experience solo adventuring. Players and DMs beware, a new standard has been set.

This solo adventure continues the story arc first begun in Death Knight’s Squire, developed further in Tyrant of Zhentil Keep & Citadel of the Raven, and left in The Tortured Land. Drums at Daggerford’s ability to echo a Tolkien spirit reverberates throughout the narrative no matter which path you may choose. But choose wisely because a razor’s edge separates peril from glory.

David La Boon

Over a year in the writing, this latest instalment in our solo adventure series is a mini sandbox campaign that will give you anywhere up to 8 hours of solo adventuring enjoyment. Completionists and those who like to replay these adventures will get even more gametime. There are mysteries to be uncovered, items and sidekicks to be gained, codewords to unlock and villains to conquer!

With lots of exploration, meaningful decisions, hard fights, and a variety of rewards and stories, Drums at Daggerford will continue to resonate with you long after solving the big mystery behind Krond Vikkurk’s malevolent plans.

Jessica Laurent

A great adventure playable either as a stand-alone or as part of an ongoing saga with the same hero, Drums at Daggerford is long enough to give you great value for money while being exciting enough to keep you engaged. Sure to scratch the itch for solo players and always-DMs alike

Dantonius Jones

Your story begins in Ilinvur, where you meet a mage, Malthuveus, who sets you on a quest. The town of Daggerford has been taken hostage by a marauding orc known as Krond Vikkurk! Krond, with the aid of an army of orcs, goblins, hobgoblins, gnolls and other creatures, has kidnapped the population of Daggerford and moved them to an unknown location. Krond demands one hundred thousand gold pieces for their safe return. For his efforts, the orc now has a bounty on his head: a reward of one thousand gold pieces has been promised to anyone who can discover the whereabouts of the hostages, and defeat the infamous orc.

As usual, the document contains hyperlinks that navigate you between entries, removing the need to scroll. Also, rather than the more linear narratives of our previous adventures, Drums at Daggerford can take any route you wish as you visit locations in any order you desire, much as a party would in a standard module. Interactive maps allow you to click on locations and visit them for exploration. A system of progress points allows you to measure the passage of time to keep track of resting and travel. But don’t worry - unlike previous quests where progress points have been utilised, there is no time limit on this adventure! Time is the least of your concerns - keeping your character alive is!

Well-written and highly detailed, the world opens up before you where every street corner and forest hollow beckons the brave explorer. Don’t pass it by, there’s a surprising adventure at every turn. I had a blast exploring Daggerford and this is what you need to solo your way through a Dungeons & Dragons adventure.

Christopher Zirk

Playable with any level 5 PC, this adventure is designed to provide you with many hours of DM-less enjoyment. Perfect for those situations where you can’t meet up with your group but have an insatiable craving to roll some dice!

Had lots of fun with this adventure. The story is beautifully written and combat is challenging yet satisfying!

I ran this with a lvl 5 half-elf Paladin, and generally enjoyed it.

There was one let's call it "boss" encounter that seemed WAY overpowered for a solo 5th level anything. It did make fleeing easy, but that did not sit well with my character who wanted to rescue the captured. Regardless, I think that encounter should have been redesigned with a couple nerfs of that boss, maybe how often it could cast its spells or something. That battle was a "lock" for the boss. A 4-6 character adventuring party would have struggled with that one.

I had a halfling sidekick that I picked up along the way and gave (and loaned) items and treasure for his help. The most important thing he did was aid with stealth-related tasks like stealing a magic item from a dragon.

I short-circuited the final battle by using an 8th level Dominate Monster spell from an amulet I had picked up in a fun solo adventure called "The Crystals of Z'leth". Burning it costed me the...See more

The Progress Points continue to be a problem. In this case, the need to complete 24 points before taking a long rest nearly killed my party more than once. This is particularly nonsensical in Daggerford - there are plenty of places to hole up and rest, and trying to make it through 24 points of encounters means either a lot of wasteful wandering around (and/or returning to cleared out areas), or waaay more encounters than you have resources for. After my party (of two plus a sidekick) was nearly TPK by a goblin ambush, I had them hole up and rest the several hours I needed to get one party member back to 1 HP so they could benefit from the subsequent long rest. I strongly encourage players to take a long rest whenever they feel like it, and just make it longer than 8 hours.

As an aside, it's remarkable how many of the creatures encountered have DEX 14+ and some mechanism (beyond the standard flanking) to gain advantage on every attack. The turbo goblins were just one example.

OTOH,...See more

Kids and I are really enjoying going thru these books. Love how these bring back memories of playing thru Final Fantasy books when I was a child. Can't wait for more.

I'd wanted to try DnD with my kids, but the idea of GM'ing fully was a bit daunting. Using these books as guides, I was able to introduce them to DnD. We are basically treating them like play throughs of Folkore: The Affliction board game. Bits of narrative, with bits of decision making and skill checks, interspersed with some tactical combat.

Appreciate:
- how for the big combat encounters, you lay out the first few steps for the enemies.
- the replayability of later titles, with all the choices not taken on the first playthrough
- the skill checks and applicability of traits and non-combat spells

Is there a mailing list we can sign up for updates on when new titles are released?

Hey there Lap, thanks so much for the support! Glad you and your kids are enjoying, and basically how you describe it is exactly how I intended them to be played and appreciated :) Thank you for the kind words.
In terms of a mailing list, I don't really have one, but if you go and find my Facebook page Paul Bimler Fantasy Author, I post all my new releases on there so that will keep you updated. :) My new book, Caught in a Wizard's Web, is about to enter playtesting so shouldn't be too far off.

First: I really enjoy this series and played through all titles now and will continue to do so. I think this is amazing work. Thanks Paul!
Non the less: part 5 made me think.
Looking back I must say that I'am not sure if I like the changes to the approch of how to navigate through the adventure. I totally get that the new map system opens up a much broader scape, but - at least for me - it somehow breaks immersion.
I try to explain:
In the previous titles one entry led to another and decisions you made prevented you from taking other routes. I knew I was not seeing everything but that was part of the attracion because in the end I found my unique way. My decisions shaped the story.
With the new open map approach I repeatedly found myself tempted to check of all options, which led to a game play that was much more "power gaming" or "min/maxing" than "story focused" ...
Has anyone experienced something similar? I'd be interested in how you feel...See more

Very well, I'm about 75% done and am about to go on extended leave from my job so will have a lot more time to complete the writing. I should have the first draft completed before end of year. Then it will enter playtesting. I'm anticipating it being ready by mid January!

Me and my brother have been playing the same characters since your first campaign was released. I just wanted to say thank you from the both of us. Looking forward to the next adventure! Also I was wondering if there will be some references to previous campaigns? For example after completing the Citadel of the Raven me and my brother were knighted, but we haven't had any use for this title in the adventures that followed. All the best! Absolutely love this product. Best solo adventure I have ever played. Some inspiring work indeed. I do have a comment though, I like to print it out and play it lake the old tsr solo modules. I would love to have numbered pages and an index. A 2 page campaign map inside the pdf would also be realty nice for a print version with white background. Well, maybe for the next installment? ;)

I'm enjoying this so far.

One note: I don't understand what happened from entry 199 to 146 to 407 to 92, from where I end up in entries anchored around 198. Looking now, it seems that all of the other paths from 146 don't have the same problem.

I have played through all the books as a Rogue and as a Barbarian. You have made an impressive product. I was always a fan of Game-Books and you brought a new twist to it.
I wanted to ask, when do you believe you will publish the Level 6 follow-up, "Caught in a Wizard’s Web"?

Good Luck for the Future.

I've been really enjoying this series and this particular adventure was my favourite so far. It's awesome and I'm looking forward to the next!

I loved how freeform it was, even compared with Tyrant of Zhentil Keep (in which I got a bit frustrated at the lack of option to tell quest-givers "Actually, I already said I'd do something else at that time, how about I help right now? Or... tomorrow?"). It felt fantastic finally being in control of when to try taking a short rest, and having the option to explore as much as I wanted with the risk and resource cost I was willing to accept.

I also liked the sidekicks and hope there'll be more in future.

Combat felt more of a reasonable challenge in this one, after a very harsh previous adventure. That said, I had more trouble with grunts than with boss fights this time. Throwing out 3rd level spells really makes a difference!

If I may make one request: As a wizard meeting other wizards and visiting magic shops...See more

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
