Keep of the Kobold Queen logo

Keep of the Kobold Queen is a Japanese Roleplaying Game (JRPG) inspired pixel art title that includes an adventure optimized for 3 to 5 characters at 2nd level, six pregenerated 2nd level characters, new classes, new magic items, new monsters, and pixel art paper miniatures.

KotKQ line break

An adventure…

In Keep of the Kobold Queen, characters will undertake a quest to investigate reports of a kobolds that have closed a major trade route. Their adventure will lead them through the town of Coneria and into the ruins of the ancient city-state of Cerulea. But is the disruption really as simple as a band of rowdy kobolds? Or have they discovered an ancient power in the ruins of Cerulea? Traps, puzzles, and dangerous battles stand between the heroes and their victory.

...advanced classes…

Inspired by the branching job systems of classic JRPGs, Keep of the Kobold Queen introduces two original advanced classes: the Cerulean Sage and the Dragonsworn Knight. The Cerulean Sage is a full spellcasting class for characters that want to learn to mimic the magical abilities of iconic monsters. The Dragonsworn Knight is a martial class specializing in pole arms and trained to make incredible leaps that end in devastating attacks against their enemies. By progressing through the adventure, characters can unlock the ability to multiclass into these advanced classes.

...and paper miniatures.

Keep of the Kobold Queen comes with sixteen original paper miniatures designed by pixel artist Marcos Freire including the fearsome dragon Pakhangba—a draconic esper characters can learn to summon if they discover her hidden location and curry her favor!

Our group ran this and LOVED it. Now there's a down side... We want MORE adventures like this! Is there ANY hope you'll do more in a series like this? As we had a blast. (Especially with our Party of 4 tortles all named after lead singers of rock bands...)

Seriously. This was an absolute blast to play. We need more!

I bought this adventure a while ago, but only recently got to use it. Gotta say, this is grand, but there's some oddities with the non-quest stuff. Lester O buy some good ones, but another head scratcher is the Dragonknight's jump not being clear about how fall damage works. Like, are they meant to ignore fall damage from their jump?

Great introductory adventure full of JRPGs nostalgia. I have a few questions and a suggestion:
1. For the Cerulean Sage I didn't see any mention of what it can use as a Spellcasting Focus. Was this intentional design? If not, what could it use?
2. Is there any effect on going back in your Dragonknight pledge (like breaking an oath for paladin does, but since paladin spells emanate from faith, breaking your oath affecting you makes sense)?
3. Can you take a pledge to both defend and defeat dragons (like you would defend metallic dragons and defeat chromatic dragons)?
4. How does the Cerulean Sage interact with multiclassing other classes in relation to Spell Slots?

Lastly a suggestion for addition to handouts (or be an additional PDF): can we get printable Spell Cards with the Cerulean Sage spells?

I love how you included socketed items, a treasure hunt mechanic, the esper mechanic from classic trademarked properties, and made it feel like I am buckling down to my old Nintento in the 90s. I'm getting to test drive this with my group in a week or two with the pregen characters you included. I do have a question about mapping.

Did you leave the maps relatively vague by design so they can be adjusted for adventures with more than 4 PCs?

I'm so excited and I hope you come back and tell us how it went after you get the chance to run it!

The vagaries of the map are more of an aesthetic choice than a game design choice. I didn't want to focus overly on descriptions of the dungeon, creating details the DM would potentially feel obliged to pass on to the players. I'm interested in feedback on that particular decision though!

I love everything you do, so of course I bought it immediately and am in love with it. Initially I was disappointed with the amount of content, but the amount of effort and work put into this shows a true love for the source material. I'm hoping where will be more added to this 'setting' in the future. I particularly love the small implementation of a 'summon' feature and the crystallia. I'd love to see more of those in particular.

Thank you so much for your kind words, Thony. Keep of the Kobold Queen was absolutely a labor of love. I'm very interested in turning KotKQ into the first of a series of JRPG inspired adventures provided there is ongoing interest and, yes, each entry in the series would add new advanced classes, iconic JRPG inspired monsters, crystallia, and summons.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
