SOLO ADVENTURER'S GUIDE - LEGENDARY CHARACTERS

The first rules expansion for the Solo Adventurer's Guide, Legendary Characters provides guidelines for playing Solo D&D with only one character (instead of a party) and without the need for complex encounter balance calculations.

by Guilherme Bento

A recurring question among Solo D&D players is whether it's possible to play an adventure or even a campaign with a single PC (Player Character), and the answer is yes, it's possible. However, as explained in the Solo Adventurer's Guide, the encounter tables and chalenge rating of D&D creatures are usually designed for a party of four PCs, which makes it somewhat difficult to create balanced encounters, and more often than not, the brave and lonely PC ends up doomed to a tragic and untimely end.

The purpose of this supplement, therefore, is to delve a little deeper into this issue and present another, more sophisticated and interesting solution that makes it possible to play planned adventures for four PCs with a single PC of the same level, without having to recalculate the encounters, reduce the Challenge Rate (CR) of the monsters or the Difficulty Class (DC) of the tests to be performed.

The Solo Adventurer's Guide is a d20-based Dungeon Master emulation system that allows you to play D&D without a Dungeon Master. If you don't know it yet, don't waste any more time: click here

Solo Adventurer's Guide - Legendary Characters is a handy guide to playing D&D legendary adventures with only one character.

I'm curious on your thoughts about something like Druid wild shape and temp HP spells/effects.

For a moon druid a lot of their power is locked in their wild shapes, so would you perform the same HP increase to their beast forms? What about other temp HP effects? Do you think you would scale those up to make them feel as effective in normal play, or would they be too strong then?

Hello Nicholas M. Thank you for your interest!
Sorry for the late reply. This one really caught me off guard XD and I confess that I didn't think about it that much, but my intention, at first, was not to change anything, neither in the spell effects nor in the druid's abilities, considering that in an adventure of just one character the character advancement tends to be faster (due to not having to share XP) which should guarantee quick access for the druid to the most powerful transformations of wild shape and, for other spellcasting classes, to higher level spells.

Anyway, I was quite curious and intend to try more about it in my solo sessions. And I would also love to know if you have any ideas or suggestions about it.

Great system! I am a bit curious on how the HP changes effect the encounter difficulty thresholds though. Typically a deadly encounter is deadly for a PC with much less health and not necessarily the total pool of the party. In this case a truly deadly for the legendary PC would be a TPK threshold. Is this planned? I have only tested on first level so far.

Hello Damon F! Thanks for your interest and feedback.
I confess that I was a little surprised by this distinction you mentioned about what would be a deadly encounter and a "TPK threeshold", because for me they are the same thing. I see a deadly encounter as an unequal combat where there is a clear advantage for the enemy and to overcome this challenge the hero needs to find something that allows him to turn the tables, whether using the terrain in his favor, a strategic position, a distraction, element of surprise. , new allies or discover an enemy weakness. At worst the hero could flee to survive and fight another day. After all, winning a battle doesn't mean defeating your opponent, not always at least.

But going back to the question of balancing encounters, for practical purposes you can think of the legendary character as a party of four characters of the same level. Obviously, there won't be a perfect balance, and there's always the help of dice that can betray you in the boss...See more

Hi! I really enjoy this and the solo adventurer's guide. I noticed that that one had a home printer friendly pdf. Is there any chance the Legendary Character's supplement will have one as well?

I have just published a new version of this book. The texts were proofread and some typos and translation errors were corrected.

Not sure if I missed it if it was included, but curious what the rule for gaining experience would be. Since it's technically four players in one, would you be 1/4-ing the experience gained from encounters then to determine when you level up? Other then that concern, I really like this concept.

Hello Lucas B, thank you for your interest!
From what was planned in this material the idea is to distribute XP normally, without dividing by 4 or any other adjustment. The character's progression will be accelerated, but from the experiences we have done this will not make it much more powerful than the enemies that will be faced (the numerical advantage is something that will challenge the hero until the end of the adventure) and when a villain faces him equally equally, the legendary actions will disappear, since they are only available outside your turn. We tested this material with official adventures and came to that conclusion. However, we would love to hear about your experiences if you decide to try a different rule.

Does this work with any set of solo rules (for instance, the Mythic Game Master Emulator) or only those in your D&D Solo Engine?

Hello Dungeon M. Thank you for your interest!
Yes, this works well with any set of solo rules (like Mythic GME).
Only the rules system which is very specific for D&D5e, but the ideas contained in these pages can be adapted even for other versions or even other systems.

Hi! I like this, but I do not understand a bit of terminology you use regarding the Cast a Spell (Costs 2 actions).

What is the meaning of the "lower circle" in the text? I haven't found a reference to this in any of the official sources.

Thank you!

Hi Michal S., thank you for your interest!
I'm sorry. This was a translation error. Please replace "circle" with "level" every time it appears.
I will fix this in the next version.

To explain better: when casting a spell using a legendary action, it must have its standard effect, even if it is cast with a higher level slot. For example: if you use a 4th level slot to cast the 3rd level magic "Fireball" it will still work as if you have spent a 3rd level slot.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
