Shadowcaster

The Shadows Are Yours to Control!

The shadowcaster is an updated version of the original shadow-controlling spellcasting class, written by the class’ original creator, Ari Marmell, and developed by now-WotC-designer, Dan Dillon.

A student of the umbral ways, the shadowcaster knows that the gloaming is more than a mere absence of light. Before time, before light, before life, there was darkness. Even now, that darkness waits beyond the edge of all things, in the void beyond worlds, and mortals, and gods. Eventually, even the brightest of lights and the greatest of stars must gutter and dim. The longest day must yield to twilight. Darkness underlies all reality, and shadow is the only eternity.

Now its power, and its mysteries, can be yours.

Shadowcaster is a 30-page supplement that expands shadow magic with its own class, built with multiple penumbral ways that determine how you access the powers of the Plane of Shadow and granting access to the mysteries of shadow over time.

Whether you seek to be a dread witch, noctimancer, or shadow scion, Shadowcaster gives you everything you need to become the thing that goes bump in the night.

There is also a 2nd level spell on the shadowcaster spell list called "Minor Image" however, there is no spell by that name in 5e or within the homebrew.

Hi, I've been really enjoying the product but I've had some questions/feedback:
-Storm of Vengeance Doesn't have the proper font header in its description and could be mistaken as part of the Spirit guardians spell description.

-Windows of Shade mention that you can make a gaze attack against a living creature that you can see. It doesn't elaborate if this 'attack' involves an attack roll or not. Which is rather confusing.

-Does the Flame Blade created by the Shadowcaster still give off light? There is mention of a visual change to the blade but it is never explicitly mentioned if it loses the 10ft bright, 10ft dim light from original spell. Keeping it seems odd on a class that has mechanics about staying in dim or no light.

-The class feature "Gloaming Feast" at level 13 makes the creature immune to nonmagical disease and poison. However in 5e the line is quite blurry on what could be seen as magical and what isn't. To reflect this the monk had the "non-magical"...See more

Hi Geoff! There are indeed new spells in this product, however, as presented, they are all Shadowcaster exclusive. We're not picky though, you're welcome to decide otherwise for your games! Thanks for the question.

I'm thinking about purchasing this, I've heard there were a bunch of new spells. Is there a list of what other classes can cast these new spells?

This is great! Shadowcaster was always my favourite class in 3e, and this version fits beautifully with 5e. I would have liked to see a martial option such as a Shadowsmith, and possibly some shadow-centric feats (like that of Magic Initiate), but the class's foundations are solid enough that it would be very easy to homebrew.

I look forward to using this class in my next game!

Is Carpet of Shadow something that would be dispelled by Daylight?

We'd love to do a Binder! For the Shadowcaster, we were lucky enough to work with the original designer, and the stars would have to align for us to get to do that again. But we'll be keeping an eye out for such an opportunity. Thanks for the kind words!

A great class! It's everything I liked about the original 3.5e version of the class. Is there any chance that we will see a 5e conversion of the Binder class from Tome of Magic?

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
