Blackwater Redux

A Mad Journey on the Blackwater River

Drugs dull the damages of the Last War; gold fuels the fires which might ignite the next. A band of ragtag mercenaries must venture into the putrid swamps of the Shadow Marches to topple the drug lords of Droaam. To achieve their goals, they may have to leave something of themselves behind; in the heart of darkness

Blackwater Redux is an Eberron adventure designed for a group of five characters starting on 1st level. It brings the group to the backwater of Khorvaire, aptly named the Shadow Marches. By the end of the adventure, the characters should reach 5th level or higher. To run this adventure, you need the fifth edition Player’s Handbook, Dungeon Master’s Guide, Monster Manual, and Eberron: Rising from the Last War (RFTLW).

Blackwater Redux is a dark, hopeless adventure with strong horror notes. It is inspired by Apocalypse Now by John Milius and Francis Ford Coppola, The Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad, and The Call of Cthulhu by H. P. Lovecraft. Consuming these before running the adventure is highly recommended. The adventure’s themes loosely touch on current and past real-world conflicts. If one or more of the players are former or active soldiers, make sure to discuss the campaign’s content beforehand.

Hi Christian, I recently purchased this campaign and am really excited to run it. I had a quick question, Can you tell me what effects the Shadow Tar has if taken by a PC? I cannot seem to find it. any insight or page number would be great. Thanks!

Hey! Happy to hear that :) Regarding the Shadow Tar: I didn't put any effects into the adventure since it's kind of forbidden on the DMsGuild and I didn't want to run into any trouble. Here are my thoughts on it: I would suggest you come up with different effects for each character. For 1 minute, a fighter gets all received damaged halved, a druid can concentrate on two spells, a mage gets one extra damage die (and so on). However, each time they use it, they must make a saving throw on their dump stat, and the difficulty increases by 1 or 2 every time they take it. If they fail, they become dependent. Then they suffer from the reverse effect at all times if they haven't had tar today.

Hope that helps!

You are exactly right, it's located at the estuary of the Blackwater near Balinor's Sorrow. And you are right, I didn't exactly spell that out reading up on it. I'll put that on the list for a possible future update. Thanks! :D

As a huge fan of the both Heart of Darkness and Apocalypse Now, I have run campaigns similar to this before. I look forward to diving into it this particular effort and looking for references to the above-mentioned source material for them.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
