King Rat

ADD TO WISHLIST >

King Rat is a short adventure designed for 4 to six 3rd level adventurers. Its purpose is to present an intriguing yet simple narrative that finishes with a climactic final battle with the spotlight villain or a “Boss Fight”. It can be completed in a single session of play between important events or as a standalone one-shot.

This adventure may seem familiar, especially if you have somehow already downloaded it. This is because this is a revamped version of one of my first modules originally titled “King Rat (Boss Fight Issue: 1)”. Boss Fight was an idea bigger than my ability when I started it and I abandoned it after only four issues. I have no idea if there will be more, but I felt that since folks are still downloading these adventures that I would like them to reflect the designer I’ve become.

This adventure has been completely overhauled from top to bottom, but the old version will remain downloadable as well.

Background

Grekland Hassleberry was an alchemist, a flautist, and a single father not ten years ago. He struggled financially despite working at almost every waking hour and his relationship with his teenage daughter, Aela struggled as a result. One day, Grekland managed to scrounge up some spare coin and purchased a rat from a shady merchant in the canals of the city and gave it to Aela as a gift and a companion for when he was away.

Little did he know that the rat he bought was actually a wererat named Sigurd, shifted into animal form looking to deceive their way into the homes of unfortunate and unknowing prey. Tragedy struck and Grekland walked in on the wererat devouring his daughter. He attempted to save her, attacking the beast. His effort was in vain as Aela died from her wounds before he arrived. The wererat cruelly bit Grekland, cursing him with lycanthropy and leaving him to his fate. Not wanting to harm anyone, Grekland created a new life for himself in the woods where he spent the last ten years pursuing a cure for his condition and vengeance for his daughter.

Grekland used the powers granted by his condition to commune with other rats and created a spy network to track down Sigurd. He would kidnap and torture many people that he believed were involved with the murder of Aela, regardless of the rationality behind his suspicion. After years of unresolved grief, Grekland has become a monster just like the one that took his daughter’s life.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
