Antiquarian - A Spellcasting Class for D&D 5th Edition [1.4]

Muttering a quick charm against rot, a grubby old man gingerly opens an ancient tome, pages oozing with dark magic.

Humming a scrap of ancient spellcraft as she ascends the ziggurat, a gnome with grey streaks in her hair idly winches herself away from a crocodile pit.

Switching out his eye for one with a superior lens focus, a polished warforged tests the air with a thumb, eye-ing the treasure trove with bemusement. Cursed, he determines. Every single piece.

Antiquarians are trained specialists in the historical, and curious workers of charms and cantrips. Varied in their talents, knacks and specialisms, an antiquarian can always be relied upon to have a trick up their sleeve. The Antiquarian draws on quick reflexes, esoteric lore and skilled use of lesser magics to cheat death and haggle their way out of danger at every turn.

This includes a full class through levels 1-20, and three archetypes - Disenchanter, Curator and Infernal Trader.

Pretty cool, but what does it mean by cantrips are cast at the effective level? Is this just referring to esoterica effects or the actual cantrips?

What I mean to say is that when you cast a cantrip (or use an esoterica) it is treated for every purpose as casting a spell of the effective level denoted in the table. This effects the ability of enemies to counterspell or dispel your effects, and also effects and abilities that trigger on casting a spell of 1st level or higher. I'll clarify it better in v1.5 :)

Ah ok I see. Thanks. I really love this class and the only thing I think it needs is more single cantrip esotericas. Maybe three esotericas for each individual cantrip? It would also be cool to see minor illusion, prestidigation, and thaumaturgy being used. Even still, well done!

I'm definitely digging what this class is going for. The way you set up how you gain other effects by mixing cantrips is an amazing idea and I think you pull it off well. This class looks to have a lot of variety in how you play it. Parts of this class do seems a bit vague to where it could be a bit of a problem, but it does go with the theme of old magic that the class pulls from. A few issues in an otherwise excellent new class to try out.

I do have a few points I think could be clarified or improved in some way, here they are in no particular order:

- Curiosity cabinet: The spell leomund's chest has no weight limit by default, is this meant to mean that theres no longer a 12 ft cube of space limit in the chest? And if living material can be carried inside of it, can you trap creatures in it? If so, what would the DC to escape from the chest be?

-Otherworldly Emporium: When you say "Creatures gain no benefit from resting in the Otherworldly Emporium" Do you mean...See more

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
