The Gambler

Gambler Logo

A new risk-taking roguish archetype!

Why Play a Gambler?

Thematically, the gambler is a new player option for risk-taking or thrill-seeking characters who always have an ace up their sleeve!

Mechanically, the gambler provides players with a wide-ranging toolbox that always gives them an angle or chink in the armor to try and exploit. The cornerstone feature—Lucky Strike—is all about manipulating the advantage mechanic, enforcing the theme of taking bold risks for a big payoff while also functioning as a fun and unique Sneak Attack progression (Lucky Strike chance of success is ~64%, rising to ~80% at 17th level.)

Creator's Note:

This is the second in a series of personal player options scheduled for release in 2020. All of these sub/classes have gone through playtesting by myself and others, with each aiming to explore a theme or trope under-represented in official source material. With regaurds to Full Tilit, is the ability meant to let you re-roll one of your attack rolls or re-roll one of the damage rolls?
With the wording I would assume it is meant for the attack rolls in case you some how still missed with an attack roll with advantage, but I just thought I would ask in case of any confusion.

Is there meant to be a limit to dumb luck? Seems like an auto-crit should be once per long rest or something.

Nope, no limit! It's pretty difficult to trigger (and generally undesirable to try) and is mostly to create the occasional clutch moment :)

I didn't consider the fact that when you have disadvantage you don't get sneak attack upon originally making the comment. So even if you crit, you don't get to double the sneak attack dice. May be worth highlighting that in a future version so folks like me don't do a double take.

I was starting to math out the expected damage rolling straight vs rolling with disadvantage with dumb luck crits and found you could actually do more damage on average with disadvantage against a creature with 15 or less AC at level 9. But alas I did not factor in sneak attack.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
