EB-04 The Third Protocol

ADD TO WISHLIST >

IT'S TIME FOR A RECKONING

The Oracle of War has been recovered from the Mournland. Its creators respond by activating the third protocol, an instruction to recover the device and eliminate all who know of its existence. As night falls, a posse of assassins step off the lightning rail with orders to raze Salvation to the ground and retrieve the Oracle. This Tier 1 adventure is optimized for APL 4, and is the final adventure in the four-part Spoils of War storyline.

Welcome to the Oracle of War campaign, a new 20-part standalone story for the D&D Adventurers League! You can play this adventure as part of your own Eberron: Rising from the Last War campaign, or as part of the Oracle of War organized play campaign. While this campaign runs under the umbrella of the Adventurers League, it utilizes different rules. You can familiarize yourself with these unique campaign rules by checking out the Oracle of War Player's Guide and Oracle of War DM's Guide, found in the D&D Adventurers League Players Pack.

I own this on Fantasy Grounds and can't rate it here, hence the comment.

This is a fitting capstone encounter to the first tier of play. By now the players have hopefully developed relationships in Salvation which give this adventure meaningful stakes. No need to hold back on the destruction / damage. The assassins going around and painting the town red is a big motivator to respond. The assassins are distinct and flavorful, and their different approaches to the hunt for the Oracle create the opportunity to improvise fantastic scenes. There is a lot of cleaning-up to do afterwards that can provide non-AL tables the opportunity to involve themselves in Salvation's growth and rebuilding.

I just ran this last week. I might be running it again in the near future for a different group. Two questions came up:

1) Is there any reason why the characters couldn't get to Saal Dreadstroke first and fight him while his team are doing their own actions? How long does it take him to get hostages?

2) It seems likely that the characters will engage one or more of the assassins near where Saal Dreadstoke is waiting for part 4 to begin. (Especially if they're fighting Gorg at or near the blacksmith's.) What reasons can we give for Saal not helping out his teammates at that point?

Regarding the fact the adventure says that dead characters mysteriously resurrect the next day. Do they have to for the storyline? Or is that just an AL thing that keeps people from being sad?

One of my player's characters died near the climax of this session. It was a spectacular death that made the stakes very real for them. Ghanji Saberhands tore him in half with his Flurry of Claws. Absolutely destroyed him. This is a galvanizing moment for them that I don't want to take away, but I also don't want to break the storyline and I haven't read the whole thing yet. Can I let him stay dead? Thanks.

I've played up to adventure #10 in the series so far, and I don't see any reason to not let dead characters stay dead if that's what you and your players want.

In AL, specifically in the Eberron AL campaign, it would be difficult to get the player's new character up to level 4. But outside of AL, you can just have them roll up a new level 4 character.

Thanks for the info!

Yeah, we aren't following the AL rules, we are fine just starting a character on level 4. In fact, he's already got his new character all sorted out.

Ghanji is a playerkiller - with a rush, plus six attacks that he can't spread out, he's very likely to instakill a PC. Glad to hear it was a great moment, though.

Something to note, if you use a grid for the salvage market fight with the Ash Hounds, Irrulan is right there and players may choose to target her. She's not statted in this module, so you can choose to use either the veteran stat block she's given in Into the Nightland, or a full Necromancer stat block. I hadn't planned for her to be targetted, so my players killed her after she had only one round to try to flee. My post-game suggestions to avoid this are (a) she immediately hides in her armored stand, which is suitably tough (AC 18, DT 10, 50HP) or (b) she uses Misty Step and a Dash to flee to the Chapel of the Silver Flame and beg for sanctuary.

What NPCs are the assassins allowed to target if the PCs are too slow? It doesn't seem to indicate who is important for future adventures and seems to imply they are ALL on the table.

If you don't mind a spoiler:
So far, up to EB-10, none of them pop up, even in EB-09 during the assault on Salvation. So I'd guess go to town, but maybe spare the brokers if you want to run EB-EP-01 later; Whist if your players saved them in 01, and the editor of Salvation Times, since their news clippings do come back.

By the way, one NPC threat to whom got a quick reaction from my players in one of the parties I run was Garundah, Belaluur's daughter who they saved back on EB-01. PCs wanted to wait assassins out while they spread around town and strike right at Saal; but that surely wouldn't do, so that was the button to press.

On page 11 the NPC Generator has a typo. It states that it's a d10 table, but is a d20 table. It's a minor error, but easy to fix.

So...just curious, whatever happened to the magical electricity spear that Sheriff was listed as having? Seems like a bit of an oversight that the players would be unable to loot that as one of the bonus rewards on the AR.

Valid. This was an oversight. I guess you could say it was empowered somehow by Sheriff's lifeforce and loses that power when Sheriff dies.

Don't know where to put this:
Is there a RELEASE DATE for storyline aka campaign arc two Fortunes of War, so for DDAL-EB-05 A Century of Ashes etc.?

Will D said on Mar 10:
"Core modules due for release on the first Tuesday of every month."

Does this mean we expect CoA in May?

Yes it does.
I found the answer to this question over at the Iron Titan (EB-EP-01):

Ashley Michaela L Apr 8, 2020
Good morning, Ian,
Glad you're enjoying our team's hard work. The release date for EB-05 is Tuesday, 5th May 2020. It's the third question at the bottom of this article:

Could you provide some valid foreshadowing for the Century of Ashes, pretty please?
Just some info to hype the players up for the next story arc. As it is, it feels kinda bland to just leave them over the dead Saal, and I dont want to just improvise something that might not come into play later.
Thanks in advance!

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
