Lycanthrope Class for D&D 5e (2024)

ADD TO WISHLIST >
Suggested Price $2.50

All lycanthropes get their curse from somewhere. Were you born with it, transferred from the blood of your parents? Were you bitten by another lycanthrope during an adventure or attack on your home? Did you get cursed by some craven mage who sought to punish you? Was it a life you chose to accept, being granted such power by a deity?

That's what this class explores, covering all types of lycanthropy! A strong and very customisable martial class for those who want to walk on the wild side, this makes a perfect addition to any party and can easily be used to generate NPC Lycanthropes for your games too!

Some features include:

  • A subclass for each different type of Lycanthropy: Werebat, Werebear, Wereboar, Werefox, Wererabbit, Wererat, Wereraven, Weretiger, and Werewolf as well as four bonus subclasses!
  • A multitude of customisation with over 40 "invocation-like" Totem Powers to give your Lycanthrope new abilities!
  • Playtested and balanced features, printer friendly versions too!
  • And much, much more!

I love this, it's a really clever way to tackle lycanthropy and I love the variety! My initial hesitation is with the difference in base attack damage between subclasses. I understand the thought behind some animals being more powerful than others, but I think players would feel less compelled to play a wereraven for example with its 1d4 beak attack compared with the werebear's 3d4 XXX attack.

Hi! I'm glad you like the class!

Although some origins have less damaging natural weapons in their hybrid forms, they do get other bonuses that make up for it either at 1st level, such as the Wereraven gaining a flying speed in their hybrid form and being able to use Dexterity for their Predatory Strikes, at later levels or via totem powers unique to that origin.

Also if you liked this brew, please do have a look at my other work too, it's all PWYW.

Glad to hear you like the class!

I could possibly put together a json file (there's already one out there in a homebrew repo of 5e tools), what app would you need it for? Something like Avrae or Fantasy Grounds?

I would use it for the 5th edition character builder apps me and my friends use. Heres a link if that helps.

I'll take a look into it, it's not an app I've used but I might be able to work something out for it.

If you have "Better Roll20" you should be able to import it from the associated repo, although maybe hold fire as I still need to submit an updated json file to the repo with the new subclass and such.

I like this class quite a bit. I'm wanting to make a couple subclasses for my own setting.
My setting's a bit sci-fantasy; there's one faction in particular that uses a lot of technology and robotics. I was wondering if there'd be a good way to do a technology-themed lycan? I'm thinking something like a cyborg where sometimes the cybernetics take over or something like that (though if you have another idea I'd like to hear it)

Do you have any suggestions for features and such?

Hey, glad to hear you like the class!

Specifics for the features would depend exactly on what the technology is like/how it functions in your setting but to start with I can give a few general notes for designing something:

1st level feature: This is where you'll give them a hybrid form which comes with some sort of natural weapon (which could be anything from jaws/claws to cyberpunk-like arm blades in your setting), the strength of the weapon depends on what you're going for with the subclass but will stay within the general bounds for melee weapons in 5e: no higher damage that 12 (1d12/2d6/3d4) before mods, no higher than 10 (1d10) if it has reach, and no higher than 8 (1d8/2d4) if you're able to use Dex instead of strength. Also includes the Con save on hit to avoid Lycanthropy, which I guess could be whatever mechanical virus/nanovirus/etc is causing it in your setting getting partially transferred by the attacks, and anything else appropriate (like the Were-Hell Hound's fire resistance...See more

So, I just got this cuz I was looking for a lycanthrope class, and out of all I've read thus far, it's the best version of I've seen thus far. It actually pairs well with some homebrew races I've found that can naturally shift into an animal, as this can extend their control and abilities within said form when they reach the appropriate levels. Also, love the not-so-subtle band reference, a perfect addition to this. I also like the take on a hellhound lycanthrope, I don't think I've seen that before.

Curiosity question, any plans to make a dragon or kobold origin for the bonus section? It'd be a fun way to surprise a party when their BBEG can *surprise*! Turn into a dragon or beefed up kobold.

Glad to hear you like the class and that you got the band reference! I'm a big fan of Powerwolf so I couldn't stop myself from adding something related; the Were-Hell Hound was just based on a neat bit of art I found.

Y'know, something like a Were-Dragon or Were-Drake sounds like a neat idea although balancing may be a pain. I'll give it a go and see what I can come up with, thanks for the idea!

A good place for some ideas, at least on the balancing side, might be the Child of the Dragon supplement by Niels de Jong given their alternate takes on Dragonborn, Half Dragons, Kobols, and Lizardfolk and a fair chunk of dragon related subclasses.

I just downloaded the updated file and I like the way you made it, and I love the bonus powers for it. I'm gonna be using this class for a boss (I build my bosses like PCs for uniqueness) and it's gonna be an interesting fight.

I love the idea behind this, specially Totem Powers. I've bee using to multiclass into a werewolf (but sadly only got 2 levels unitl now of my 5 level character).
One thing though it is that it does not clarify if a remove curse spell or others get rid of the curse if the character was bitten and not born with. I get that the idea is that it wouldn't work 'cause you would be leaft with a character with no features if you fifn't multiclass but still it would be 'funny' if the DM is a bit of a jokester. Just a late night thought though.

Glad you like the class! Hope you've been enjoying playing it so far!

As for the remove curse thing, since multiclassing into the Lycanthrope class requires a Lycanthropy curse of some kind the remove curse spell would remove the curse of Lycanthropy. It's kind of intentionally left open so a DM can rule it how they want for what happens to the character after the curse is removed.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
