EB-03 Where the Dead Wait

ADD TO WISHLIST >

CAN THEY BE STOPPED?

On their way back to Salvation, the adventurers are ambushed by a large force of undead and forced to seek shelter in a ruined cottage. As the dead close in from all sides, the survivors turn to the Oracle of War for a lifeline. Only this time, things don’t play out as expected.... This Tier 1 adventure is optimized for APL 3, and is the third adventure in the four-part Spoils of War storyline.

Welcome to the Oracle of War campaign, a new 20-part standalone story for the D&D Adventurers League! You can play this adventure as part of your own Eberron: Rising from the Last War campaign, or as part of the Oracle of War organized play campaign. While this campaign runs under the umbrella of the Adventurers League, it utilizes different rules. You can familiarize yourself with these unique campaign rules by checking out the Oracle of War Player's Guide and Oracle of War DM's Guide, found in the D&D Adventurers League Players Pack.

So, I just prepared this module to run in Fantasy Grounds as a VTT. Here's some DM advice: Make a token for each piece of furniture that you can see on the map, and also for each door and window (some of them will have a Right and Left side). Also: LABEL EACH OF THESE WITH A UNIQUE NAME SO YOU KNOW WHERE THEY ARE ON THE MAP, (e.g. Southeast Living Room Window R). It is way easier to keep track of which object is being used as a barricade/trap or being beaten down by zombies when you have something on the combat tracker to represent it. Also, knowing that something has been shoved up against a window means the place where it was on the map is now clear, so that PCs can shoot over it without cover restrictions. "I want to move the harpsichord against the back door." "Okay" *click, drag, done* "What would you like to do now?" Takes longer to set up, but the game runs so much smoother this way.

There were a number of serious issues with this module. The timing mechanism was disjointing and especially difficult in virtual play. Some kind of number of actions threshold would have been better to trigger the waves of undead. There were a number of effects in the adventure that were outside the rules of the system rather than using those structures that already exist in the game. The instructions for the ritual were confusing. There was no way of detecting the trap effects on various objects, and rules definitely exist to notice those kinds of things. It seemed unfinished as though no one had played through it before it was published.

So far of the Oracle of War modules, this really is truly a one-shot! So many of the others have stretched into multi-part sessions, but this one can easily be done in one! Great job! Love the flavor and horror factor!

Hey, a quick question. Since I usually alternate between the storyline missions and salvage missions with my table, would this basically happen at the end of another mission that is joint with the Grey Dogs?

Sure, you can put it there. So long as they're with the dogs and have the Oracle with them, you're good.

was it explained in the future books why there's fresh food in there?

Had fun with the time based threat sequence. It was challenging and created tension with the players to decide what to do next. I do however have issue with undead warforged. I have run Eberron's previous edition iterations and it was established by canon that warforged could not become undead by any known means (Races of Eberron). If it has changed then some plausible explanation would be appreciated.

Warforged could not become undead normally in 3.5 because they were considered to be "living constructs" with special rules. However, even in 3.5, canonically there were undead warforged in the Mournland known as woeforged.

In 5e, Warforged are considered to be humanoids with special abilities that make them more like constructs, and so RAW there's nothing preventing them from becoming undead. If you are dissatisfied with this change, you can always state the undead warforged present in the module is a woeforged. Personally, I like the change as it opens up plot lines I'd like to explore that were previously closed by canon.

Hi Leonard! As William mentions, woeforged - i.e. a rare form of warforged that were apparently undead - were canonically part of 3E. Such beings could be created by the malign influence of the Mournland, or the negative energies channeled from Mabar by the necromancer in this story. It's worth checking out Keith Baker's blog, as some of his recent posts touch on how to explain undead warforged in 5e.

Hello. I am not from an English-speaking country and am driving adventures in Russia. Could you use a printed version of them in adventurous materials containing handwritten texts?
So it’s much more convenient to translate and make handouts in our native language in order to preserve the atmosphere of adventure. Otherwise, the preparation time gets a couple of extra hours to “decipher the manuscripts”.

Thanks Vicktor, we have had a few requests for this so I am looking into supplying plain text versions of the letters as part of the download package.

Looks like a fun siege adventure! I have a spoiler-y question however.
Treasure section of the Office location says that the purse contains 25 gp per adventurer in the party, implying that they can split it evenly with no issue. However, Adventure Record lists those 25 gp from the purse in the office as one of the possible choices, meaning you can only get either it or some of the other loot from the adventure, and there's no way of spending it during the game.
Is that at all intentional? Kinda bugs me, to be honest.

Hey! Here was the response, "To keep things balanced in the organized play campaign, non-magical treasure is allocated at the end of the session, and players can only choose from treasures listed on their Adventure Records. If you’re playing the adventure as a home game, you can disregard such rulings - if so, you can’t use your character in organized play. Full rules for running organized play games are found in the D&D Adventurers League DMs and Players pack."

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
