DDAL09-12 The Breath of Life

ADD TO WISHLIST >

An archdevil has invited you to a ball, and though it’s likely a trap, it’d be rude to decline. Dara,
however, is keen on attending, since this fiend’s most treasured possession is the bejeweled
skull of a dead angel. Dara believes that the artifact holds the secret to accessing a long-dormant
reliquary. Ready to crash a party? Part One of the Call for Aid series of adventures.

A Four-to-Six-Hour Adventure for 11th through 16th Level Characters (APL 13).

Clarification regarding the soul coin. In AL, are soul coins found in the mod awarded to each player? or will players roll for them?

My recollection is they can be earned and in AL, everyone got them, not just one person.

Thanks! There are some people saying that they only get one. But this would make a few mods virtually unplayable haha

I appreciate the clarifications!

1 outta 5 stars for me dawg.

This mod is a railroaded mess that has terrrrrrible consequences for the slightest of single failures. Not only that but the parameters of not one, but TWO infernal contracts are absolutely insane. At minimum they expect characters to have played previous s9 mods and for said characters to have an abundance of soul coins. At worst, it asks for two legendary magic items to be given up. Legendaries arent even allowed in T3 play...
The only combat is if you are a murder hobo I guess? Or if you fail and do one of the bonus missions.
This is NOT a 4 hour mod to go to one party...
An abysmal failure of a mod.

Sorry you did not enjoy the adventure. There is no logical single point of failure in the adventure other than a group stealth check, which is without armor and you can get advantage on. I was informed of what to offer and I gave several options instead of an infernal contract and the one in specific you are indicating reads: • Two magic items of rare, very rare, or legendary magic items, or that can conjure creatures. Players at tier 3 can have legendary items from earlier characters. It was a point brought up in playtest to add it, not just to make it just the lower items. It was a point to write the adventure with no combats as a possibility. The characters are told the consequences and as a tier 3, a chance of failure is not common, but there is here. I'd be eager for you to read it and see if you feel the same. I cannot attest to how prepared a DM is to run this, but this adventure needs to be prepared and is not easy to run cold.

There are no legal legendaries for sub t4 play outside of story items, so no, previous players cant have them. And with item and gold caps in this season, your "cost" is absurdly high. Not to mention your 3rd choice specifically permanently nerfs a character for literally no reward other than the railroad continue. You made the entire mod "without combats" and the bonus objective only triggers if the players screwed up, and it's vehicle combat that has been in several previous season 9 mods.

I'm sorry man, but this needed more playtesting, maybe where you werent the DM? There is just so much "Because the mod says so".

There are "legacy" characters that have several legendary items. I assure you, I have played for many seasons and legendary items are out there and were rather prevalent for awhile. As long as you know it is not the only option. Gold is also not an issue for many people, but yes, it was meant to sting a bit in this season. I was given an outline and told to do XXX, which includes the war machines. I cannot help it was done before. The play testing was far from an epic turn out for sure. With a prepared DM, or myself, I am sure it would have been a different experience. The Winter Fantasy feedback was all positive.

If the legacy characters were properly converted to S9, they cannot have Legendary Items. Per the conversion document "Legendary items are removed from characters below tier 4, but held in reserve. These reserved items can be reclaimed once the character reaches tier 4. "

I agree with you Bryce. You should also mention that the mod strips the characters of armor, weapons, and the use of magic, further removing player agency. The group stealth check, even with advantage is too random to hang success of the mission on, given that many armored characters are built knowing that stealth will be sacrificed.

And you are entirely correct about legendary magic items. There is literally no way in Season 9 for a legal character to have a single legendary item. At best even a legacy character might have one placed in reserve, awaiting them at Tier 4. And removing that from a character is not worth it for the success of a single adventure.

Our party had zero soul coins, even after several of the members had played several S9 adventures. We simply refused to give up any magic items, and the DM had to find an alternate path.

I agree with Bryce C entirely. This module is total crap. Zero fun.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
