The Consort

p9 Song of Creation : "The Leanansidhe has designed it necessary to teach you the ways of their creation magic, with the caveat that you not restrict yourself with iron longing." What is "iron longing"? What is the caveat actually asking?

The visual look and layout of this character class for fae intrigue and romance is in line with any published add-on for Dungeons and Dragons, and it fits in almost seamlessly in look and feel.

I found this an excellent add-on for the game style I am planning. The Consort is not going to fit every game, but for those who are looking to create a magic born of love, lust, bonds and friendship, this will give you the tools to begin crafting that person who's uncomfortably close to a person of power and speaks for them and acts for them. It is clear with the construction of the class that sensuality is a near expected given, though what else do you expect from the consort of a powerful fae ruler?

Most useful for all games will be the magic items provided, easy inspiration to add flavor to your fae-themed settings. I loved the magic items,...See more especially the Stonebearer's Cudgel, which I think has potential to add a whole new element to your druidic characters, and the Glimmer of a Second Sun, which can flesh out a dex-heavy character's attack a bit. All of the magical items provide boons and buffs which would please a player to acquire, and I enjoy both their names and their rules.

The biggest limitation is that only four fae patrons are fleshed out. Someone who has already used those famous names or a similar concept will need to reskin to expand their faerie lore. I would have liked to see one or two more. They are all distinctively different archetypal fae sovereigns and bring with them a different direction to be a Consort. It would be easy to mix and match a bit of flavor from a different fae idea you have.

All in all, I found it quite useful for MY game, anyway... which is set in a handful of settlements right beside the Feywild and involves multiple political streams of interactions with the increasingly hostile fae. The Consort class is unlikely to be useful for a dungeon delve full of ogres, unless a PC is bringing this character archetype to the table. Even still, they won't get the opportunity to roleplay it to the fullest without there being a court of the Sidhe. It will meld in wonderfully with intrigue, romance, and magical places full of manipulative people in more ways than one. I would be okay running this as a player or allowing it as a DM. The spells included are mostly fun, non-game breaking, and thematically tied in with the patreons / fae rulers included. There will be a blessing or a boon for every character in this class gained at level 3, and these are generally personal blessings which will make your play a bit easier, remove spells from requiring spellslots, etc. They are all themed around the sovereign who grants them.

I can imagine this playing exceptionally well in a single player single GM game, focused exclusively on the politics of being a consort to a fae. If companionship to someone of enormous power... and maybe a romance... sounds like something you would want to play, I recommend picking up the Consort character class by Jackson Lewis to add into your bank of potential fun. This has been lovingly crafted and will be very enjoyable for the right game.

4.5/5. Not quite flawless, in my opinion, but it's very well thought out and contains many enjoyable possibilities to play. I will enjoy using this class in the future in some fashion.
