Last March of the Tyrant Wyrm

ADD TO WISHLIST >

“Many that live deserve death. And some that die deserve life. Can you give it to them? Then do not be too eager to deal out death in judgement.”

--J.R.R. Tolkien

Can your party engineer the redemption of an ailing red dragon?  Faerun is counting on it…

A chance encounter with a fleeing, injured red dragon leads to a multi-day journey through the wilderness.  Your party will discover that the dragon is much more than a typical Red; he secretly wishes for redemption and to atone for his past, evil deeds. By embracing the adventure’s theme of redemption, your PCs will find a wide variety of ways to change the dragon’s heart and deliver him instead to a Good-aligned band of elves from his past.

Along the way, the party must avoid two evil factions, each with their own dark plan for the dragon:

  • necromancer, who wishes to kill the dragon then reanimate his corpse to serve as the vanguard of her army
  • The Cult of the Dragon, who wishes to re-ignite the dragon’s evil tendencies in order to re-conquer the region
The adventure uses a point-crawl structure and a combination of mapped locations, random encounters and triggered encounters to advance the plot while leaving lots of room for your players to improvise and shape the story. The region comes alive in over 40 possible encounters, hitting on all 3 Pillars of gameplay.  17 new monsters and NPCs and a 12 new magic items!
‘Last March of the Tyrant Wyrm’ is an adventure 4th to 6th level characters that can be run as a standalone adventure or integrated easily into the ‘Hoard of the Dragon Queen’/’Rise of Tiamat’/’Tyranny of Dragons’ official campaign.  It can be completed in 9-12 hours of gameplay.

hey there,

looking for a bridging adventure between Hoard of the dragon queen and rise of tiamat.

How easy would you say this module is to rank it up to about level 10 difficulty?

Hi Badger,
As written, it's a moderately difficult adventure--a couple of factions after the dragon and a big final fight. But there are a number of advantages that the PCs can earn along the way, if they take the time to explore and interact. Hope that helps!

Same day reply Wow!

Thanks for the quick reply. Can the fights be scaled up to level 10 or 11 please?

Or are they already and I missed this fact

Hi Badger. While the adventure is for levels 4-6, the final battle(s) could definitely be harder than that. I suggest using the encounter building guidelines in 'Xanathar's Guide to Everything' to help you scale up appropriately. Good luck!

Are there separate map files included so we can play on a VTT? A Fantasy Grounds .mod would be super. Thank you.

Hi Christopher,
Appendix C of the downloadable files is a collection of individual map JPGs. But there isn't a FG version planned at this time.

Thanks for the support and your interest! Hope you have a blast at your tabletop.

Ran an edited version of this that fit the story for my group, and they loved it. The red dragon is super compelling and has become an important NPC in our 2 year long campaign.

Thanks!

Hey Jean and Jeff, I would love to run this for a group of 4, 16th level characters. Is there any tips, tricks or the like that could help me make the necessary changes (like the Kobold for a ____ etc)

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
