Oath of Battle

Oath of Battle Symbol

The attack came with the sun's rise.

Bursting from his yurt, Urag emerged to a village in chaos—the voices of his comrades only half discernable among the clash and clang of metal, and the cries of the dying.

The Talons were here. Sent by the humans to drive us from our ancestral home. At the onset of winter, a death sentence.

Barely able to hear his own labored breathing, his eyes searched frantically for Warleader Batul. Turning aside the thrust of a spear and knocking the man aside, he stumbled through the bitter snowfall, slipping on ice and mud.

He spied Batul outside the tannery, a bullwark against enemy spears with a small company of warriors. Batul turned, their eyes locking momentarily. Bellowing a war cry, he charged to meet another blow.

"Do not falter! Bathe your axe in blood!"

The cry was taken up around the camp, and Urag could see the momentum beginning to turn. He found himself echoing the cry. He drew his axe, and charged.

Why Play This Oath?

Thematically, play this oath if you want to inspire and lead your allies into battle as a clan chief, war leader, or an ex-soldier of rank. It also works great for anyone wanting the flavor of a barbarian while not being so hot on the mechanics, or in viking-themed games.

Mechanically, have you ever noticed how paladin oaths tend to fall into one of two categories: solo offense (conquest, vengeance), and defensive support (the rest). Where are options/features providing offensive support and teamwork?

Originally the brainchild of a member of our group seeking a similar alternative to the Oath of Vengeance, this oath aims to fill that gap by meshing the archetypal tank/support combat role of the paladin with the aggression of the barbarian or fighter (and—if we're being honest—possessing a more interesting flavor than just Fantasy Batman™.)

Take a Look! You can read the full archetype in the preview, so check it out! If the buttons aren't working you should be able to read the full oath in the image previews below. Page 4 is a copy of page 3 with colors removed for easy printing.

Oath of Battle is an amazingly clever, exceptionally well balanced paladin subclass that shows just how good heavyarms' D&D5e design sense is. The narrative is extremely well incorporated into the mechanics, which is quite difficult to do within th [...]

A wel made document, however contrary to the other reviews, I think balance is an issure here. Knocking 2 AC off of a creature is huge, and on top of that adding all friendly creatures within 10/30ft getting crits on 19-20 is a bit far. [...]

Well thought out and written. Cherry on top is that the author clearly did their homework and made sure things were actually balanced! [...]

Ok, here's the thing. For me paladins always have this flavor-baggage that kind of forces you into playing either a religious fanatic or a lawful idiot, and I HATE that. But this class, doesn’t have that! It feels like a fresh approach to these holy [...]

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
