Ulraunt's Guide to the Planes: Acheron

Quill & Cauldron presents to you a very special 300+ page tome, aimed at both players and dungeon masters.

It is narrated by none other than Ulraunt, the Keeper of Tomes at Candlekeep, and also supports epic level play (as introduced in Epic Characters).

Below is a short description of what you will find within each part of the book.

display_part1.png

  • A narrative told from the perspective of Ulraunt, designed to inspire and create story hooks, as he descends through Acheron's four layers with his band of misfits.
  • Details on Acheron and each of its four layers, including environmentsfauna, and flora, how to get there, what hazards to avoid, and much more.
  • A detailed look at each cube face of many of the cubes that exist on the various layers, such as Nishrek, home of the orc pantheon, and Clangor, home of the goblinoid pantheon.
  • Tables to help you quickly create your own cubes.

display_part2.png

  • We explore a total of 16 deities, including Bane, Laduguer, Deep Duerra, Urdlen, and the entire goblinoid and orc pantheons.
  • Each deity includes nifty tips for roleplaying them, mighty stat blocks, awe-inspiring lairs, and templates for creating versatile avatars.

display_part3.png

  • One new playable race and one new subrace.
  • Eighteen new and unique subclasses, such as the exploration-focused surveyor artificer, the sinister blood hunter of the order of the warmonger, or the malleable druid of the circle of warshaping.
  • Over 50 new spells of all levels, each inspired by the prevalent themes of Acheron such as atrophy, cold, magnetism, metals, psionics, and storm.

display_part4.png

  • 138 new stat blocks, some based on existing lore, others seen here for the first time.
  • Four war mounts.
  • Three new war machines.
  • Seven unique characters from the Forgotten Realms, such as the fabled Obould Many-Arrows.

Available
  • Print
    • The book is available in both hardcover and paperback.
    • The paperback is available in both standard and premium colors.
    • The hardcover is only available in premium colors for a truly premium experience.
  • PDF
    • The PDF is available as single pages and as spreads.
    • Both versions are hyperlinked throughout the table of contents and the appendices.

Question about the cantrip Icicles: Why does it do half damage on a successful save? Is that an error? Cantrips never do half damage. Only Evoker wizards can do half damage.

I was looking through this from my DM for character options and I think I noticed an oversight. The Way of Ferrous Esotericism grants proficiency in light and medium armor, but it doesn't grant any sort of exception for the monk's unarmored features (martial arts and unarmored movement, and technically unarmored defense though I guess that defeats the point of the armor). I'm fairly sure this isn't intended because the Ferrous Blades feature mentions your unarmed strikes, which would be very weak if you aren't benefiting from Martial Arts.

Finding wording that works for the feature is tricky. I'd suggest something along these lines:
"You can wear light and medium armor while still retaining the benefits of your features as though you were unarmored."

I have a question about Gilgeam and his realm Zigguraxus, from what I can find it should exist in 5e, at least according to the fandom wiki, but it's not included in this book, what is the reason for leaving him out?

Slightly off-topic, but I want to see the complete compilation of every volume in the Codex of Infinite Planes in a single, hardback book.

The PDF is 367 pages. That's a huge tome, but even if it were $100 I think people would buy it. I know I'd buy it the moment it released.

Update : Sorry for not updating you guys here about my experience with Acheron! Three of my players were out for most of Q1, and I was able to get only so much data. Thankfully, sessions are starting to pick up now that my coffee shop is open, and I should have a full review of a Lvl 17-22 campaign in a week or two.

The Shadowfell book doesn't have a print version because DMsGuild is weird like that.

I know they were playtesting more content (I was participating!) but then 2020 got weird and I didn't get any further correspondance.

Ah, good to hear that some progress has been made.

I would play test myself, but I’m a bit full writing notes for the Grim Hollow Kickstarter.

At least you got correspondence up to that point! I hadn't heard anything back since my last feedback email which was sent in late April. I had to cancel my playtest campaigns for lack of content. I revived it for Grim Hollow at least.

Hi everybody,

Apologies for everything coming to a bit of a halt in the latter half of 2020.
Last year severely affected several team members and has been quite a struggle.
But yes, some progress has been made, though it has been quite slow.
We're currently trying to ramp back into gear.

We'll soon be needing some beta reading for a new title.
If any of you are interested in helping out, feel free to contact me via e-mail.

Honestly, an update was long overdue!

As for beta reading, we're just looking for some feedback on some material.
Is the flavor good, is anything unclear, does it seem fun, that sort of thing.
We could use input from one or two more people.
We have a discord set up for this very purpose where we're looking at just a couple of things at a time.
Beta readers can look through it and comment at their leisure. There's also no expectation that everybody comments on everything.

Let me know if that sounds at all interesting to you :)

I had the privilege of playtesting Acheron and I'd love to help out with this product as well, I've already sent an email to the official channel but does this mean that there's been a change in the procedure due to the pandemic?

Edit: Also I don't have your Email address.

I'm curious to the Blood Hunter Warmonger Blood Curse of War. Does it only do something if you amplify it? And with Blood Hunter being updated does it use Intelligence instead of Wisdom for the DC?

Hi Paul,

The blood curse affects others with what you already have. Use it to buff an ally or on an enemy caster who suffers the detriments but can't reap the benefits.
I've uploaded a separate .pdf with the updated Blood Hunter. The file is currently mistakenly named "(UGttP_Acheron_v1.0_spreads.pdf)" - and I can't seem to change it.

This book is awesome. I'm currently playing a Stormsmith in a pirate-themed campaign and playing an arcane trickster-going Daggerspell Wizard in another campaign. I'm very excited!! Conjuration Wizard is my favorite School, but Daggerspell could very match or surpass it!

Hi Paul,

I'm so happy you like it!
While we do a lot of playtesting and take multiclassing into account, I can't recall if we had anyone try arcane trickster + daggerspell.
I'd absolutely love to hear your thoughts once you've played it through a few levels.

Hopefully, yes, though I don't have a timeframe.
There's a limited number of people who do FG conversions and there's a ton of conversion going on these days (for obvious reasons).

I was wondering what the reasoning behind the difference in spellcasting between the deities from the Shadowfell book and this book was, specifically how the ones from the former didn't require any components to cast spells while the ones listed here only eschew material components.

Hi Callum,

Great question!
So, all of the deities presented in the Shadowfell guide are part of the Faerûnian pantheon.
Those deities (and perhaps some other deities who are very magical in nature) don't need any components for their spells.
The more specific pantheons, such as the orc pantheon, the goblinoid pantheon, etc. only eschew material components in comparison.

Now, there are never any rules without exception.
You might notice that Shargaas, for example, doesn't need verbal components whereas the other orc deities do. This is due to his stealthy nature.
The same can be said for Yurtrus, who, well, can't speak at all. Verbal components would render a spellcasting trait rather moot on him.

Though Bane is part of the Faerûnian pantheon, he still requires somatic components. Since he wields no weapons in the traditional sense and grapples with his left hand, we assume he'll always have his right hand free.
It allows room for a DM...See more

Hi Lulian-Loan,

As you might imagine, things are moving a bit slower this year.
However, we're always working on new things and revisiting existing titles.
It's been six months since release now and while we've certainly found some mistakes (in no small part due to the loving community here), there haven't been nearly as many as one might have expected.

These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
