A Darkness from the Stars

Descend into the Starpeaks in A Darkness from the Stars, a mystery adventure set in Eberron.

This 3-5 hour one-shot, built for characters levels 4-6, is sprinkled with Eberron’s celestial lore, bringing you a mystical adventure for Dungeons & Dragons Fifth Edition. When the researchers of the Starpeaks Observatory are put in danger by a creature nesting under the mountains, the characters must delve deep into the caverns to root out the threat. Nightmares wrack them as they descend, and the source, the great astral dragon slumbering in the depths, has a secret of its own.

A Darkness from the Stars offers a lore-rich adventure with darker twists and includes a 14-page color PDF, a PDF usable by screen readers, maps, NPC stats, and more. Handy sidebars are filled with tips on how to integrate this adventure into the Forgotten Realms or your own settings without sacrificing the lore.

Unfortunately, I am having a hard time understanding "the door". Is it accessible on the same level as the observatory, or is it higher up and only accessibly seen through the telescope (which makes Ilda showing them and the circumvention much more pertinent)?

Hey! That's a great question.

I didn't get too specific because I realized that all of the playtesters were envisioning the door in different ways (one of them had the telescope and the door in different room, the orrery took up the whole room, and they had to swerve the pieces around! I thought that was cool.), so I thought it'd be better to give the DM sort of "magic door" freedom.

It works either way: the important thing about the door is not its exact location or how it appeared, but that it's directly across the room from the telescope. Use what feels best to you. I had it on the ground floor but embedded into the mountain so that it was a little out of sight unless you were looking for it.

What is a good amount of players for this?

Hi there! Thanks for the interest!

I recommend 4 or 5 players between the levels 4 and 6!

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
