The Ruins of Nightstone Keep

Cover Image

"Upon a rocky cliff overlooking the foreboding valley of the Red Tusk Orc tribe sits the ruins of Nightstone Keep. Within its walls hides a small library, once protected by the soldiers who made the keep their home. Tucked away somewhere in this library, covered in dust and forgotten to time, is a book of dark and ancient magics known as the Codex of Xuprix."

The Ruins of Nightstone Keep is a Third Level adventure for three to five players written for Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition. The adventure begins in the town of Elder Crossing and from there carries on to the nearby ruins of a once mighty fortress known as Nightstone Keep, and the dark caves that lay below it. Members of a shadowy cult led by a man named Sanzir have come to Elder Crossing asking questions about the keep and a tome of magic that was rumored to be hidden there. Can the adventurers keep the tome from the hands of Sanzir before he finds it and uses it to open a portal to the Shadowfell, unleashing its horrors on the small town?

The Ruins of Nightstone Keep includes:

  • A 30 page full color bookmarked PDF
  • A "printer friendly" version of the PDF
  • 2 full color printer-ready PDF battlemaps of Nightstone Keep and the Caves
  • A full color map of the town of Elder Crossing, which can easily be placed in any campaign
  • 6 custom NPCs for Elder Crossing, and 2 NPC Hirelings
  • A new monster type, the Red Tusk Orcs
  • A player handout of Elder Crossing, Nightstone Keep, and surrounding areas.
The Ruins of Nightstone Keep was written during the Fall/Winter 2019 RPG Writer Workshop.

This is one of the most comprehensive adventures I've downloaded so far, which has me thrilled. There is so much information here, and it's so clear that the author has the DM in mind in terms of information, layout, and details. The encounters and sta [...]

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
