Behold: 8 free pregenerated characters for use in the Gothic Earth D&D setting (the world of the Masque of the Red Death Player's Guide), along with a custom character sheet for making new characters, a player summary of all that setting's new rules, and an added cheat-sheet for the DM. All are designed to be easy to pick up and use, allowing you to start play within moments of grabbing a character.

Hailing from a dark version of our own world in the 19th century, these characters all have fully-realized backstories and roleplaying notes (including guidelines for creating relationships with other PCs the moment they hit the table), and each bears an explanation of all the new rules required to play that character right there on the page, including the use of 1890s firearms such as pistols, rifles, and shotguns.

Since these characters include every rule necessary for using them in play, they are perfect for new players, though veterans of D&D will find them just as useful. As suiting the Earth-like world they call home, all of these characters are human, but with customized with different classes, archetypes, and social backgrounds, based on the new character options introduced in the Masque of the Red Death Player's Guide. All players need to do is choose a name and other personal details like gender and nationality, and they are instantly ready to begin a new adventure!

The included characters are:

  • "The Antiquarian" - 1st level Scion (Adept) - An Egyptologist whose study of ancient hieroglyphics led to the lost secrets of spellcasting;
  • "The Artisan" - 1st level Stalwart (Expert) - A tough-as-nails metalworker who immigrated to London to help battle demonic forces;
  • "The Criminal" - 1st level Sleuth (Criminal) - A cunning convict, called to fight a secret war after witnessing a cellmate's unnatural murder;
  • "The Dilettante" - 1st level Shepherd (Socialite) - A privileged aristocrat desperate to escape an occult "social club" with a terrifying secret;
  • "The Parson" - 1st level Shepherd (Parson) - A dedicated spiritual counselor, determined to master the forbidden art of exorcism;
  • "The Physician" - 1st level Sleuth (Expert) - A brilliant doctor, descended of royalty, tracking a supernatural plague across London streets;
  • "The Scout" - 1st level Soldier (Outrider) - A cavalry officer from the Americas, with  skills at tracking and survival that aid the quest to find a vanished spouse;
  • "The Shootist" - 1st level Soldier (Gunslinger) - A grizzled veteran, the haunted sole survivor of an unexplained massacre.

In addition to PDF versions of all these documents, the download also includes a Microsoft Word file containing the pre-gens, player summary, and DM cheat-sheet, allowing you to edit the characters as you see fit or even to easily copy and paste them into your own DMs Guild products (see the note below for more info).

This is a free preview of the bestselling Masque of the Red Death Player's Guide, which is a complete guide to all the rules you need to play in the Gothic Earth setting, including new classes, new archetypes, new backgrounds, new equipment (from pistols to typewriters to dynamite), new spellcasting rules, and new systems for running everything from firefights to social combat. Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
