The incredible world of Doors & Locks

Title

Have you ever thought to yourself “Huh, I really want a D&D supplement specifically about doors”... no? just me? Well then, this is awkward... I have one, like, right here, and I was going to tell you all about it, and you’d be excited, and so would I. But it’s okay, don’t worry, I’ll just be here, with my supplement... about doors... that you don’t care about.

Oh, come on! Who hasn’t thought about a door supplement?!

Well, you know what? I’m going to assume that you want it and tell you all about it anyway. And there’s nothing you can do about that because this is not a two-way communication system.

Sooooo, anyhow...

This is a supplement about doors and locks, but really, it’s about presenting a way of thinking about structural elements to better present narrative characteristics about its context, focusing on doors and their respective locks because they allow me to move the argument from one to another without having to make things complicated. Also, there are tables wherever I could fit them because I really like tables.

The supplement is meant as a narrative assistance tool and, while it does contain some rules, it’s not as rigid as you might be accustomed to. In it, you’ll find many different ways to enhance your entrances, some clever ways to create challenges out of them, a few puzzles, as well as guidelines for if you ever find the tables lacking. Everything neatly packed into a rigorously designed document (seriously, this took me a while to make).

All in all, I hope you find my work interesting, and something worth reading!

See? It wasn’t so bad now, was it? And you laughed at me... well, to be honest, I was going for that, so you’re not to blame here. Anyhow, you made it to the end, thanks for that. Here's a really low-quality preview as a reward:

Grim Press made a Fantasy Grounds version of the document, so if that's something you think you'd be interested in, you can find it over here: https://www.dmsguild.com/product/303108/The-incredible-world-of-Doors--Locks-Fantasy-Grounds!

CHANGELOG

January 16th, 2020

Really minor update, I changed the wording on a sentence a bit, fixed the Discord link, and added a key to the second page 'cause it looks cooler that way.

August 15th, 2020

Removed the link to my old website and updated the Discord link yet again. Sorry about that.

All joking aside, I know how it feels to not be able to afford something you like, believe me, I do. If you ever find yourself in a situation in which you can’t afford any of my work and you still want it, DM me on twitter (@NirDine). I’ll see what I can do for you.

Toodles.

Oh, shoot, I forgot to change the link inside the .pdf! The price for web hosting skyrocketed, so I decided a Discord server made more sense for now. Apparently someone else bought the domain.

I just uploaded a new version of the document that has the correct links (version 1.2). You can find it on the second and last page or, if you're feeling adventurous, you can use this to find it: 2MvMxK2 (I can't share the link with you on this platform).

I’m really glad you like it! I’m in the process of writing a new document, and comments like yours make the whole thing much easier!
I believe that I’ll be publishing my second document in the coming months, so be on the lookout for that! This one will be about prophecies!

All I have to say to you is Wow!!! I never would've thought to do anything like this with the doors in my campaign, and I have to say it is probably one of the most ingenious ways to make that locked door more exciting other than by busting it down. My favorite part was your table on puzzle doors and now I can't stop thinking of new riddles to keep my players on their toes. This truly is a work of art!!!

If I could give a recommendation, the only aspect of this that I feel needs improvement is with mundane locks. There was information involving finding keys... awesome! You made it clear that the overall condition of the lock can impact the intensity of the check to break a door down, which is also awesome! But the title of this supplement suggests that both doors and locks will be equally discussed.

Here is what I'm thinking:
-Maybe what you need is a section regarding the quality of the set of lockpicks for each type of lock
-Costs for the different qualities of lockpicks...See more

Thanks, I'm really glad you like it! Honestly, these types of comments make my day.

While writing the supplement a lot of things I wanted to talk about were cut from the final version to make it more concise and actionable. One such topic was actually society/race defined locks, but it was a bit boring to read so it never made it into the final version.

For the most part, I'm using doors and locks as a way to present the concepts I want to showcase in a more digestible way and, while I could use other things, there's an easy well-understood connection between those two that makes the final product seem more cohesive. I have to admit tho that "The incredible world of Doors &, to a lesser extent, Locks" would make for a great title!

Joking aside, I think that if I ever delve back into this theme, I'm definitely focusing more on locks and the idea of a blocked entrance. The website is much appreciated, I'm always looking for these types of referential material!...See more

Although you said your topic of society/race defined locks was boring, is there any way you would be willing to share it? If it has content as good as the rest of your stuff I'd love to give it a read!!

For sure! It's a concept that I toyed with very early in the writing process, so I'm not sure if I'll still have it somewhere, but I'll let you know if I find anything. I wouldn't get my hopes up tho.
There's a Discord link in the Title page if you want to talk about it in length!

So, I've been looking in my old notes and the things that I got rid of, but I couldn't find anything substantial. I do whoever remember someone posting about a similar concept on Reddit, but I can't seem to find that either. Sorry to disappoint you!

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
