The Light of Yule - A Christmas One Shot

ADD TO WISHLIST >

Note from the Author

Heyo gang! So this was one of the first - and only - one shots I ever put out on the DMs Guild, and I think it is going to stay that way as writing adventures is just hard for me. I can DM them, but write them out for other folks is just hard. What I can do though is make things more visually appealing. This here book has gone through a MASSIVE visual overhaul, as well as had some writing cleaned up to make it a little easier to read, and so it flows better. Still with all the same original holiday flavor and fun and art and adventure - just with a fresh coat of paint over it. I hope you enjoy the new and improved look!

Hey guys, I am planning on running this story as a side quest of a larger campaign. I have modified it to fit our story - which is Curse of Strand in Appalachia on our YouTube channel Geek & Southern (https://www.youtube.com/c/GeekSouthern). We will provide credit in our show notes and link to where to buy the PDF. Also, I have made DND Beyond Home-brew versions of your monsters so I can run in Encounter mode. I will not publish these to the Homebrew community with out your permission. Thanks!

Hello! I really liked the review and bought Light of Yule. And while I still like it, there are a few issues. It might be because I'm somewhat inexperienced with this, but it felt like parts could have been clearer.

1) Fey creatures can only be reduced to 0 HP with cold iron weapons. Alright, fun idea, but what actually happens instead? Can you infinitely keep them at 1 HP? Do they fall unconscious but don't die? Do they vanish and reform?

2) The dark cloud that the characters can spot from time to time doesn't really come up again. It is mentioned twice, seems ominous and somewhat foreshadowing, but then nothing comes of it

3) In the part where Jack Frost first shows up, it says "If the players do not subdue or kill Jack Frost within six rounds of combat, Sandman (Handout A) appears." But if they do kill/subdue, I guess he should still appear?

4) The whole Sandman episode does not really give agency. The saving throw DC at 25 is so high, at level...See more

Hi Osa, all good questions!

I plan on going back and really reworking and editing the whole adventure, so comments like these are super helpful. I am going to take them all into consideration, but let me answer them for you!

1. The idea would be that you can kill fey creatures with cold iron, so you can reduce them to 0 and therefore killing them permanently. If you reduce them to zero without cold iron, they will reform.

2. The dark cloud is meant to be a kind of heads-up about Sandman, that he is following them around and just kind of in the background. So he is purposely rarely mentioned.

3. Yes, the idea being that Jack would take off to heal, while Sandman takes charge.

4. It does not, and I struggled for a while to figure out how to do that encounter. Potentially, I am thinking of scrapping it and replacing it with a newer, more diverse encounter - but I do want to keep Sandman around.

5. The necklaces are mentioned as being...See more

Quick Question, am I missing something or does not Handout A exists?
For example Sandman and Aenyr's stat blocks are mentioned to be there, but in this product there are only Adventure with Appendix A+B, cover art, maps and Monster stat blocks?

Hey Sini - no, you are not missing anything. I forgot to edit the title of the stat blocks page when I uploaded, which I will down the road. Also, Aenyr and Sandman were going to have stat blocks, but we ended up deciding against it since nothing combat wise happens with them. I think in future updates we might add stat blocks for them just if folks want to go that extra mile, but no, you have everything you need from the initial download. Hope you are enjoying the adventure!

What is the point of the test in the The Forest of Freezing Chimes? The first one says it is to "to gauge the kindness of the characters". The other two do not mention anything like that. Also, who is giving us these test?

Do the risendeer just stand there like a mount or should initiative be rolled for them. They are not describe as part of the creatures that are attacking. They only mentioned as a means of escape. Are the ice elf shaman riding the risendeer when you encounter them?

If Hovdyr is going to help us fight, it would be great to have his stat block. On the other hand, Hovdyr seems to be overkill for this encounter. Do we really need to help a 30 ft. tall gargantuan silver dragonborn? With only 4 Level 8 PC, this is only a hard encounter (without Hovdyr's help) I am just not sure how to handle Hovdyr in this encounter.

Also, the Ice Elf Shaman is a Large fey, not a medium fey?

I have a question. On the Great Cloaks of Warmth, are you saying that each time they are hit, they can heal for 1d4 + their Proficiency bonus? Or is that only when they are hit with cold damage?

Hey there Will! So it is cold damage, I was remiss to add that to the description in the book.

Cameron, one last question about this. Does the number if time we can heal have a limit? Or can it be done all day long as a reaction.

It is all day as a reaction. Thanks for asking all the questions! I appreciate it! I think I will have to make an update with that info in the coming days.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
