It's time to act like a real dragon! Unleash your breath weapon, fight with claw and fang in this 5th edition D&D Forgotten Realms adventure for evil dragon characters!

Iyrauroth

Year Of Rogue Dragons is set in 1373 DR during the Dracorage. It's designed for four players who take the roles of newly hatched evil chromatic dragons. The story will introduce a specific section of the Forgotten Realms along with its prominent individuals, organizations and a segment of its history. The adventure will draw the players into a conflict between three local factions, and a mystery, which they must solve and use to their advantage in order to eliminate every menace that threatens their life from the onset.

The 99-page module features 9 full-color dungeon maps, a complete map of Thar and the Northern Moonsea region, over a dozen full-page color illustrations and 21 unique NPC and monster stat blocks including old favorites like:

- the Zhentarim Skymage

- the Dragonflesh Golem

- and the Wearer Of Purple and their Initiate Cult Wizards.

The Purple CaravanThe Necromancer's VillaTower of the Horned WatchersThe eye from the deep

Chapter 1. introduces the players to the setting and the life of wyrmling dragons while experiencing the ongoing Dracorage. This chapter aims to introduce the life of dragons, the surrounding lands, and creatures inhabiting Thar through some seemingly random encounters.

Chapter 2. has three subsections in which the motives and goals of each faction will be revealed as they each present three different quests to the players, which they might take, refuse, or use against them. Getting involved with these factions also lets the players collect every piece of information needed to lead them to a solution that rids them of their enemies, all in one single daring and grandiose final event.

Chapter 3. is the climax of the adventure where the players recover the key element that can save them from multiple threats. They will have several options to use it, depending on which factions they made their enemies and whom they want to eliminate.

There are no maps in this, well there are but only on the pages of the adventure. Are there no standalone maps within the advanture without buying the maps individually? Because the map product descriptions say they are supposed to be part of the adventure. Yet there is only a PDF to download

I have the maps and they are no longer corrupted. However, now the maps are larger than 10 mb to upload and use in roll20. Is there another way around this? Thank you in advance and cant wait for the Crown of the Oathbreaker stuff as well!

Would the rules and encounters that come with this be useful outside of this specific adventure/setting? I'm new to DMing, but I also like to homebrew things, so I can't really tell if I'd want to run this as-is or just cannibalize it for my own purposes until I buy it, especially since this sounds like it might be a bit too dark for one of my potential players.
Also, would what this book presents work for metallic dragons? I can tell that good-aligned is viable based on the answers to previous commenters, but it's not exactly clear if that applies only to good-aligned chromatic dragons (rare as those may be).
Lastly, would this book have any way of balancing player dragons of different ages (such as giving a younger dragon extra class levels)? I ask because I already know one of my players wants his dragon to be younger than the rest of the party, and I like the dynamic that could create, but I have no idea how to handle it.

Hi Charles!

I created simplified rules to make dragon level and age category advancement easier. The encounters are quite dragon specific, but they can be re-used and implemented in other settings as well. After long consideration I wrote the module to be chromatic (evil) dragon specific. It would need some rework to make it applicable to metallic (good) dragons. You would need to find new motivations for some of the plots and NPCs.

As for different ages, the module starts when the player dragons hatch so I guess playing younger dragons then that is not possible. :) But if you want to have some of the player to be older dragons then you will have to find a reasonable explanation to them being drawn into the situation. I think this could be done fairly easily. They would not born to their intended lair but discover it later, or maybe before chapter 3. You will have to make the enemies a bit more powerful though...

Hope you will find your way and make it suitable for...See more

if you wanted to continue after the end of the adventure, how do you do all the balancing on encounters. I've looked at a lot of different things but it doesn't have the answer to how to balance a combat encounter FOR dragons, not against them.

Hi Eric! I always try to break it down to stats, like damage dealing capacity vs players' HP, attack vs ACs, etc... Checking from the other end, check what the players can deal in damage, what they can hit with their attacks, etc. I mean for example, these dragons can deal massive damage with their breath weapons in a single round. Also make sure the enemies can deal ranged attacks or they can fly :) Keeping everything at a bit against the odds for players like 40-60% seams to be the most exciting and still accomplishable balance. So handpicking, measuring, counting and more math :) A bit of experience with monster tactics also helps. Oh and the most important: never put in a single foe against them. Nothing but a tarrasque can be a worthy opponent for four adult dragons. Cheers!

thanks. I was thinking about with d&d beyonds encounter builder, something like that without making the enemies too powerful or something so easy they don't matter, because their dead within rounds 1 to 3, regardless of flying.

Really excited to run this with friends when they pop over! Just to be sure: Before adding any class levels, do the wyrmlings retain every stat of the normal monster? ie. the saving throw numbers, the skill checks, passive perception, etc.?

Hi Pam!

I'm happy to hear you like the book. The answer to your question is yes. You keep every stat of the wyrmlings (after modifying the ability scores as seen fit, just to have a bit of difference amongs characters of the same color for example, or to fit a desired class a bit more) and add the class as described in the Character Advancement section.

Have fun and please let me know on any of the social sites or even here, how the game unfolded for you guys!

Thanks,
Gabor

Absolutely will give a report if I can pull this off next week! Another question: Mohmitath mentions rules, but the only one I'm really finding is the part about the gate and the question. Are there any particular rules to be mentioning here? Additionally, are we assuming Mohmitath has never actually been beyond the gate when it says she doesn't know what lies beyond it?

I'm an idiot, ignore that last question about the beyond the gate part. That's what I get for not reading thoroughly

No worries ;) There are no other particular rules by Mohmitath. By “following her rules” she just means that the wyrmlings should respect her privacy and keep a distance. She is a sphynx after all, reserved, mysterious, not the center of the social scene :)

How would you make it playable with good dragons? I think the story needs to be shifted a bit, but it could be achieavable. I mean, the half-red sphynx can be a half-gold, and you pcs wouldn't have to do the bidding of the cultists... actually they could get the paladin as an ally and work together on defeating the enemies? What do you think?

Thanks for the question! I had these thoughts while writing the main plot and the quests. I think it can be adapted to good dragons, but they must decieve or ally with evil factions in order to survive. It would be very naive to say that Iyrauroth would not kill them outright... He might enjoy torturing them the same way or you could come up with something that keeps him for slaughtering them initially... The possibilities are endless. Just keep the motivations realistic and it will work. Cheers!

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
