"I love books like this." - Ed Greenwood (excerpt from Foreword)

"When Arclath asked me what a forest was, I probably looked at him like he’d sprouted an extra head. Though, he posed a good question; if I’m writing this book to explain these locales to people who have never seen them, how would I explain a 'forest' to someone who’s lived in a desert wasteland for their entire life and never seen a stand of trees larger than a dozen? Saying ‘you just know what a forest is when you see it’ doesn’t work anymore."

- Amarune Whitewave

Amarune's Almanac Volume 1 is the first in a multipart series exploring the eight biomes of Dungeons & Dragons within the Forgotten Realms campaign setting.

Forests of the Realms gives an overview of Faerûn's various forests and their flora, fauna, and some history. It does this through both narrative prose, written from the perspective of Amarune Whitewave (the great, great granddaughter of Elminster Aumar), and through occasional notes from her husband, editor, and traveling companion Arclath Delcastle.

Contained with this 50-page tome, you'll get:

  • 2 new subclasses

    • the Circle of the Grove druid which seeks to expand on the land (forest) druid

    • and the Sylvan Sentinel, a conclave of Rangers who are blessed by the fey to guard their realms.

  • Variant rules: expansions to the Druid and Ranger classes to allow them more access to the new spells contained within this book!

  • 10 spells: each using a new spellcasting component, Environment, as they each rely on the boons of the world around them.

    • +1 bonus spell, druidic practice, which is the Druid version of the ceremony spell for Clerics.

  • 10 magic items: imbued with the power of the forest and their denizens.

  • 10 monsters: new creatures for Wild Shaping, mounts, and companions!

  • 20 flora: the bounty of the forests. Roots, trees, and flowers that you can collect and use to create all manner of items, as well as improve some spells.

  • Downtime activities: A gathering expedition specifically designed to find and collect the flora described in this book.

  • 5 location stories: Straight from the journal of Amarune Whitewave herself, stories of their expeditions into five notable Faerun forests: Adhe Wood, The Jungles of Chult, High Forest, Tangled Trees, and Yuirwood.

  • A map of Faerûn: Updated for 5th Edition, this book contains a two-page map of Faerûn covering the Sword Coast all the way to the Plains of Purple Dust

  • Also included is a separate high-resolution PDF of the map in both colored and Printer Friendly, available to print on 8.5"x11" or 11"x17"

  • Journal-style sketch art by Shiah "Cinder" Irgangladen and several other full color pieces throughout the book, combined with a field-journal document style complete with spilled ink

and...

  • A foreword written by the creator of Forgotten Realms, Ed Greenwood, himself!

Is this like "official" content? Asking for those who are sticklers for only using WotC content. If not, I'm surprised it isn't. WotC needs to give some of the stuff on the Guild an approval stamp to the well designed material. Could boost sales more.

I'm looking at the sample and thinking, damn, just take my money already. But something this well-designed needs to be physical. Are there options for having a physical copy? If not, how acceptable is it to print this for my own private use? I'm not sure the policy and don't wish to stamp on anyone's toes. Thank you very much for your time!

Thanks for the kind comments!

There is no option to buy physical through Dungeon Master's Guild - this is something that DMsG only offers to certain products that catch their eye.

Not for lack of trying!

But if you want to purchase and print for personal use, go ahead!

Thanks!

Hi Steve! The above was certainly true when you wrote it, but it's not any longer. I'm told that DMsG recently made it much easier to enable POD products on the site (well, not easier per se, it's still a hassle from what I understand, but rather much more widely available to creators). If you haven't already, I'd be most grateful if you could look into the possibility of creating POD compendiums of the Almanac. Maybe vols. 1–4 in a single book, and then vols. 5–8 in a second tome? I would dearly love to have these available in hard copy.

Only Amarune's Almanac: The Underdark qualifies for POD at this time.

If we did a compiled version, it would count as a new release and we could release it as a POD but considering time and the work involved it may not be a priority at this point.

I would also love these to be available to others in hard copy!

I'm wondering if there are plans at any point to bundle Vols 5-8? The FG for all of them?

There are!

Shortly after 8 is released, there will be bundles made for 5-8 and 1-8.

Trevor Armstrong and his converting team are working on all editions of Amarune's Almanac in Fantasy Grounds and bundles will be made available for those as well.

Hi there! My group and are about to do some downtime and my druid/wizard wants to go plant hunting! However, I'm looking at the flora tables and I cannot find the DCs for the specific plant-life. The downtime section states "Each of the plants on the Regional Flora table designates the regions of Faerûn in which they are most commonly found, and their DC." However, no DC is listed on the table? Is there a formula for determining the DC? Is there a table I missed? Iv'e checked the other volumes and found the same problem. What am I missing?

Hi Miles!

Sorry, that's an artifact that I've not since had a chance to go back and fix >_>

The intent is that the DCs are set by the DM, using the DC Tables from the DMG (5 = very easy, 30 = almost impossible), based on the region.

Originally, every flora was going to have DCs for each region you found them in, but it became very redundant.

So for a player looking for Duskwood in Neverwinter, the DC is probably 10, since it's so common. But if they wanted to find Ironwood, which is not on the table at all, a DM could set a DC of 25 or 30 to allow the player to have at least a chance.

I might whip up a quick 1-page that applies to all Amarune's Almanac volumes explaining this process and include it with all the products in the near future; and then later patch them into the layout.

Sorry for the confusion!

Hey, will this series be ever available in hardcover or softcover format?

Sadly, I can't answer that question at this time. Dmsguild's print on demand program has been inactive since August of last year with no news as to how it might look if and when it's reopened.

Depending on how sales go with the series, we might provide print ready files for people to print for themselves but that is just something we might consider down the road.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
