Opus of Extrinsic Substance - 60 Otherworldly Spells

ADD TO WISHLIST >

Beyond the natural world lies infinity. Spellsmiths have long tapped into such otherworldly wells of power to manifest otherwise unknowable effects in our world: priests who draw forth the power of the sun in their open hand, warlocks who conjure vestiges of ancient evil, wizards who manufacture constructed servants to tirelessly follow them, sorcerers capable of trapping a creature's mind in an inescapable and deadly illusion, or bards that use magic of the mind to rip the spells from practitioners' lips. By harnessing these powers, spellcrafters can manipulate the world in ways that would make nature itself tremble to behold.

Mobile CoverOriginal. There are thousands upon thousands of spell PDFs out there full of material from previous editions which cover a wide variety of applications and have seen years of use. Each of the spells presented here are built from the ground up completely with D&D5e in mind - balanced primarily using the Dungeon Master's Guide guidelines as well as WotC supplementary material in mind to keep the spells competitive and thematic, but not so good to be the "optimal" choice.

Bespoke Layout. A great deal of feedback has been given in regards to how Wizads of the Coast produced the first set of spells in the Player's Handbook. Many in the community adore the visual style while many more seem to hate the indexing, claiming the spells are difficult to sort through. With that in mind, I have presented Opus of Extrinsic Substance in a new, unique way that harkens back to the original PHB publication visually but sorts the spells by level first then alphabetical. Each spell also comes with an easy-to-view primer on which classes have access to which spell. I believe the change will make this document easier to navigate for new players and veterans alike.

Spells to Fill The Gaps. We all crave more options for spells. While Opus of Elemental Substance focused on contributing new forms of elemental damage, this opus tackles specific effects as well: such as necrotic spells that siphon away healing, radiant spells that heal the living and destroy the undead in equal measure, psychic spells that disrupt spellcasters, or force spells that push, pull, grapple, and ward creatures.

Familiar, but Far from Ordinary. It was my intention when crafting these spells to present options that are thematic and powerful, with a mixture of familiar and tested mechanics, as well as new and interesting ones. Many of theses choices rose from hours upon hours of playtesting at my own table and consultation with some of the most keen minds in reviewing 5e's design philosophy.

Class Focus. I tried to build a repository of spells to be appealing to several classes: Bards will find themselves with many psychic, force, and illusion options. Sorcerers, Warlocks, and Wizards each have unique spells availble only each of their classes - such as the powerful Vector Blast for the sorcerer or the Claws of Holashner for the warlock. Such spells were built with specific class needs in mind. Likewise, Clerics will find a plethora of new spells both for healing and necrotic/radiant damage.

120 and Counting. Purchasing this PDF not only puts a roster of useful spells into your hands as a DM or Player, but also funds additional works. The more purchases, the more I can create for you all. For around the cost of a mashmallow peep per spell, I've done everything I can to ensure each spell is well worth the cost of admission. Well over 1,000 copies of Opus of Elemental Substance have been downloaded thus-far, directly funding this new outing into the world of magic!

In reading your reviews you mentioned on 02 February 2020 that you will do a revision once you get to Silver Status. I see that you are currently at that status and the last upload was the original on 23 November 2019. When should we expect a revision? I am interested in purchasing, however, I feel more comfortable doing so when I know the content creator is active.

Right around Februrary 8th the entire world exploded and several big projects fell into my lap.
This pdf is NEXT UP on my list of revisions, having pushed out a revised Tarokka Crit Hit Deck pdf today onto the guild.

Rest assured, i've not forgotten about this. I'm kind of excited to get to look at them all again and add even more polish to it.

Due to an unforseen health scare and the amount of incoming new work (and the price hikes that have squeezed everyone I know, including me) I've had to put revisions on the back burner.

If you'd like a more direct line to me, you can poke me on twitter where I'm more active and attentive. One Book Shelf doesn't give me much space to interact with people.

In general, with the push to OneD&D, i'd not place a large bet that I'll be re-releasing every product with sweeping revisions and changes, though. Gotta put that attention on new projects to bridge the gap between 5e and One.

So I just bought it after Nerd Immersion's recommendation (although "after" might be inaccurate, as I bought it even before finishing the review :V), and I have a few comments/questions about some of the spells:

1-st level:
>>> Sinkhole says:
"While trapped, its speed is reduced to 0. As an
action, the trapped creature can make a Strength
check opposed by your spellcasting ability modifier.
On a success, it frees itself from the collapsed ground."
- Erm, what? Did you mean Spellcasting Ability Check? Because modifier is just +x. Making a strength check against DC 5 is probably not what you meant :P

- Also, while the spell is conjuration, not transmutation, it is not explicitly stated that the sinkhole is an extradimensional space. Sooo what happens if there is a 10ft ogre standing on the wooden floor of a building with cellar directly beneath him? Can he fall through? Does this just make a hole in the floor? Does it sorta...See more

Sorry this took a while to see - I was wrapped up in other projects. Fingers crossed I can give worthwhile answers.

Sinkhole. You're correct. This spell went through two different versions (spell save DC and opposed check). Somewhere along the way, it got mixed together. I chose to make the spell NOT require concentration, so the official errata version will be Strength check vs Spell Save DC.
--- Much like an earthquake spell (what if there's a cave underneath filled with water or acid or stray cats?) extenuating circumstances have to be up to DM discretion. Conjuration is not limited to extra-dimensional or noncorporial things. What the spell does, and why it's conjuration, is that it pulls a sinkhole from another place or even plane and brings it into existence where you choose.

Death's Breath - Nowhere in the spell does it say the corpse is animated. The corpse makes an attack - it can't unscrew a pickle jar lid or tell you anything. Avoiding "animate" was a big red...See more

In what regard?
There are no dice, so Circle of Mortality would not apply, if that's what you mean.

The Icon of Renewal text is a bit confusing. Creatures that start their turn in it take 2d6, but things can be healed for 1d6 more in it. Is it supposed to say that allies are exempt from the damage or something? The bonus healing being half the damage taken doesn't add up.

Fighter with 4 hit points starts its turn 20 feet from the icon. The icon hits the fighter for 5 radiant damage. The fighter falls unconscious.

On the fighter's turn, it takes no damage from the Icon, but is stabilized by it.

The cleric casts healing word on the fighter, which heals it for 1d4+4+(1d6 from the icon), to regain 10 hit points.

Imagine it like a microwave that will not kill living creatures, but will certainly drop them unconscious.

Some really interesting spells in here, but there's a few cases where there's terminology that doesn't exist in 5e without explanation. For example, what is the "damage reduction" for Shatter Shield? Is that supposed to be resistance against the triggering attack? Or a flat number?

I must have had ONE TOO MANY COFFEES that morning. I don't think I've /EVER/ called it damage reduction in my life. Good catch - that got past me and 2 content editors. So weird.

Yes! Resistance to damage from the triggering attack. I'll have to go back and fix that when I update the pdf (usually when it hits silver I do a revision/rebalance). While I'm happy with the overall design, It does deserve another once-over to catch stuff like this with fresh eyes.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
