Selected Option:

Adventurers need much more than just brute force, magical powers, and nimble moves in order to survive the dangers that await them. A sharp mind is just as important as a sharp sword. When faced with a challenging puzzle, finding the solution can be the difference between victory and defeat.

Puzzles, Predicaments, and Perplexities II is the sequel to the best-selling original Puzzles, Predicaments, and Perplexities. This volume contains a collection of logic puzzles, brain teasers, and encoded sequences intended to test the problem solving and deductive reasoning of characters and players, as well as two adventures that connect these puzzles with an overall storyline. These puzzles are designed to be easily placed into any adventure with no additional work, yet also provide guidance on how Dungeon Masters can customize the details to best fit into their own campaigns.

This title includes:

  • 15 original puzzles for use in your adventures.
  • 2 full-length adventures for characters of all levels that connect the included puzzles with an original story.
  • A new “Perplexity Rating” that provides guidance on the relative difficulty of each puzzle.
  • Instructions on how to scale the difficulty of the puzzles for characters of all levels.
  • Hints for each puzzle to guide players towards the solution without simply giving it away.
  • Guidance for customizing the puzzles to fit into your own adventure, campaign, or original world.
  • Optional “Raise The Stakes” sidebars for making puzzles more deadly.
  • 2 original maps suitable for in person or online play.
  • 8 original hand-outs that help visualize the layout, runes, and arrangements involved with some of the puzzles.
  • 4 unique magical items that can be found within the included puzzles and adventures.
  • 2 original creatures confronted within the puzzles.

There's an error in the Name That Tune puzzle. The final note in the standard notation is an F not a G, as is indicated in the solution on page 9 of the pdf book.

It's either page 9 that's incorrect (should be F instead of G AND the string order would be 3 1 4 5 4 1) or the sheet music is incorrect, the last not shouldn't be an F in the sheet music. I didn't finish reading the solution before posting (oops)

I'm having trouble figuring out the first "Punch Board" puzzle. The clues seem nonsensical and aren't compatible with the diagram provided (the "Board Results" have 10 columns while the Diagram has 5) Examples: A2 and A3 (clues "5 Right" & "6 Right" respectively) - the diagram shows that there are only 5 columns making both clues pointless as players can't count 5 or 6 spaces to the right. Flipping or rotating the diagram doesn't seem to help and turns the puzzles into a random-choice encounter (no longer a "puzzle" to be solved).

Any insight into how to figure this out?

Hello!
Good catch. There's actually a mistake here that looks like it happened during layout. When we flipped the version in the appendix sideways to better take up the whole page, the letters and numbers don't match the solution. If you take the appendix version, flip it 90 degrees clockwise (so the letters are on the right side, but go from A on the top to E on the bottom) and then reverse the numbers, it should match up.

I've just added a corrected image to the title that you should be able to download through the My Library link. And while there is some random choice in which holes the characters open first, the clues will guide them in the right direction when using the correct version of the handout.

Thanks for pointing out the issue, and sorry for the confusion!

Is there a PDF only version? I don't need the actual book.

Can we please have a printer friendly pdf? The printer waits a full five minutes between pages, and that won’t get us to buy the printed version because the order fulfillment time is the blocker.

I mean, 3 to 4 weeks to shipment normally. Add another 3 to 4 due to corona. Then another 3 to 4 because delivery is slowed due to politics. And another 3 to 4 because now we’re looking at delivery during peak season. So a max 4 MONTHS to receive the product.

We would really like to print it ourselves.

Hello! I realize you can't make the prior PP&P book POD because it's already been published, but any chance of a combined Vol. I & II POD?

Or maybe a volume III that combines the whole three part series into one great mega-book, the likes of which could never be defeated?

Hi!
We plan on exploring the possibility of a POD for the entire collection once the trilogy is complete.

Are these puzzles and whatnot geared toward the players (as in the players have to figure them out) or the characters (ie DC’s to figure out certain things to solve the puzzles)?

Good question. It's a combination of both, and a bit up to the DM on how they run them. But the puzzles are designed in a way that the players can figure them out themselves, the characters can make skill checks to figure out aspects of each puzzle, or a combination of both. The "Hints and Tips" section for each puzzle gives the DM guidance on the kind of checks that can be made, the DC, and what a successful check reveals. Hope that helps answer your question. :)

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
