Do you want your world to feel alive? Do you want your players to feel the continual presence of danger as they make their way through the wilderness? Are you tired of rolling random encounters to liven up travel? That's where Hazardous Terrain Challenges come into play!

I've always enjoyed placing puzzles and intricate traps in my games to give my players something to do aside from roleplaying social situations then running to kill some creatures and repeating the process. Hazardous Terrain Challenges are similar to a trap or puzzle, but they are more complex than your average trap, more engaging than your average puzzle. The world itself comes to life and directly threatens your player characters' lives!

The existance of a Hazardous Terrain Challenge in your game will keep your players alert to their surroundings at all times. When their skills are put to the test to traverse treacherous terrain, they find a new appreciation for the distances they travel, and the ever-present danger of the fantasy world they're exploring. Bring the world to life, and make it deadly!

In this volume there are two Hazardous Terrain Encounters for you to integrate into your game. They are more advanced forms of challenges that I created at my home table with my good friends while DMing some of my favorite personal campaigns. I have received a lot of positive feedback from the players who have engaged in these challenges, and that is why I've decided to hammer out the details, produce DM and player maps, descriptions and even difficulty scaling tables so you can run them no matter what level your players are. I hope you enjoy playing these Hazardous Terrain Challenges much as I did creating them.

Featuring:

  • Player maps (with 1 inch grid, ready-to-print and play with your players minis!)

  • DM maps (with annotations and labels that correspond to the book!)

  • Complete area descriptions and guide for DM

  • Introduction with explanation on how to run challenges (they're easy to run!)

  • Original artwork!

  • Scaling Charts to make these challenges playable at ANY LEVEL!

  • Loot & More!

Note that these challenges can be placed in any setting or any adventure, but it does contain an Altar of Elements, tying it very loosely to the Forgotten Realms and a few stories that take place there. This altar can be changed to fit any setting, including Eberron if need-be!

I got this for my DM to run with our group and IT WAS AWESOME!!! Lady luck was not with me that game and my poor halfling ended up in the shark infested water multiple times, and it was intense. The entire group was fully engaged. And now my character [...]

This is a very cool product to add some extra mechanics that add some interesting hazards to keep players on their toes. Our DM used these at our table. We had a lot of fun using them. These terrain challenges really kept me engaged in the game and add [...]

I like the use of sharks as a hazard rather than as enemy. The addition of a mage to the party can make all of these hazards much easier, however. There's some really helpful ideas for new DMs in there. [...]

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
