R.A. Salvatore Presents: The Vile Crypt of the Reawakened Sisterhood

Deep in the wastes where the gnolls prowl there stands the remains of an older forgotten civilization. The Tzakar-Buru left behind crumbling crypts dedicated to their bestial demon-god Yeenoghu, and the protection of the mortal remains of their kings and princes, to say nothing of the wealth they accumulated. The gnolls remember only enough to fear and avoid these tombs, but recent attempts to recover the lost treasures speak of a horrific order of unliving gnollish priestesses who feed off the screams of their victims. Is the wealth of this lost society truly worth the risk of death, or worse, an eternity of torture?

From the table of R.A. Salvatore's own gaming group comes The Vile Crypt of the Reawakened Sisterhood. This challenging adventure includes several custom monsters, deadly traps, unique treasures, and difficult puzzles. It is easy to drop into any setting and includes several ideas for enticing your players into its deadly confines.

It took R.A.'s group of 6 level 7 adventurers about 10 hours to make it through this dungeon, and they love a challenge. It can be scaled to other party sizes and is suitable for levels 6 to 8, though those without magical weapons will find it quite difficult

Question about the monsters. The description for room 10 says there are 7 Gnollish Ghouls and 2 Gnollish Ghasts inside that room. Look at the monster section I found Gnollish Ghouls but I did not see Gnollish Ghasts, was it supposed to be Gnollish Wight or are the Gnollish Ghasts' stats listed in some other book?

Good catch! That should say "Gnollish Wight". Sorry about that.

I am having an "odd" issue. I see the reviewers refer to it and I see the text in both pdf and printer-friendly pdf mention the hieroglyphs and being able to translate, but I do not see any hieroglyphs anywhere in this module, just the translations in plain English. Am I missing something here?

This was 100% my fault, thank you so much for notifying me! It looks like in my last update of the files I broke the hieroglyph font and so everything appeared as plain English. I'm so sorry about that!

I've uploaded fixed files, so if you re-download them now they should appear correctly now with the hieroglyphs in the player handouts section, pages 18-20.

Here’s a stream-of-consciousness memory dump of our experience running this module. I decided to set the party up encountering a new adventurer who has contracted with a magician to extract King Tsekanu’s heart from the crypt. Not wanting to commit regicide, the heart of an entombed king will still accomplish what the ritual requires, so he pays handsomely for an adventuring party to bring back what other parties have failed to remove from the tomb.

Obviously references here to Indiana Jones, but that’s fun.

Okay, so the trek to the crypt is largely uneventful, it’s a desert and dry land, but it is guarded by roving bands of gnolls. This gives me the chance to introduce the party to gnolls, a few skirmishes, none of major import, but enough of a threat (especially since scouts keep watching them from the tops of knolls--get it, gnolls, knolls?) that there is some concern, how will they return safely if the gnolls gather in larger numbers.

They make it to the entrance...See more

This is fantastic Clint, thanks so much for sharing! I'm especially tickled by the group deciding to inter one of their own. I'd be super tempted as DM to turn that PC into a recurring NPC villain. :)

Also, as regards the hieroglyphs -- I was very aware that some players would love it, and others not so much. There is a "DM's Tip" section in the text that recommends a couple alternate ways to handle it. I myself have run it with PCs armed with Comprehend Language spells or simple skill checks and just read the translation out loud to them. I'd also be quick to point out to my players that while translating the hieroglyphs may give some clues about the dungeon, they are not by any means required to successfully complete it.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
