I noticed that page 4 Pale Masters can cast only up to 7th levels spells so how come the spell lists on page 21 has 9th level spells? Am I missing something?

Thank you.

Hi Will,
One of the Macabre Creations (Bulwark of the Everlasting) grants access to 8th and 9th level spells.

Hi Ruben,
No, your spellcasting modifier would only be added to the attack roll, not damage.

Hey Owen,

The main content in this supplement is a new complete class (a reimagining of the 3.5e Pale Master prestige class, recreated as a full 5e class). That said, the additional content at the back of the book is open to all classes, so there may be option in there for you to utilize (at your DM's discretion of course).

Hope this helps!

is this a real DND book or is it a homebrew of libris mortis

Neither. Libris Mortis served as inspiration, but this was created by Grim Press and listed for sale on the DMs Guild (written by myself). So it is not a 'real' D&D book published by WotC, rather it is published under the Guild's Community Content Agreement.

How does this class handle scaling? Considering that Summon Shadow/Undead Cohort minions/Mummified Servant/Summon Bats/Incorporeal Dead will become weaker as you level up and face stronger creatures. Usually, class features are useful at both low and high levels, but is that the case here?

Hi Phil,

The class as a mix of abilities, some which don't scale (summoning undead minions) and some that do (graft attacks based on their spell modifier). So, it has a nice mix, in addition to creating macabre creations, that allow it to stay relevant throughout a campaign. Hope that helps!

I noticed that some of the spells listed as 'Pale Master' in the Grimlore's Grimoire aren't on the spell list section for the Pale Master. Are you planning to update to fix this?

Are you planning to add more macabre creations? I love the class but admittedly, the macabre creations are kinda unvaried. Including two which generally fulfil the same purpose (the rod and the whistle which both just animate undead) and overall are decent but subpar compared to the entire class which is amazing XD.

Hi Michal,

Thank you for your praise of the class. I'm planning to release an update with a new archetype & additional macabre creations. Unfortunately, the update has been delayed due to another project, but it is coming!

Hi Bobby,
A few of the Macabre Creations allow the Pale Master to obtain an 8th or 9th level spell.

Hi Michael,

The hope was for October, but it is behind two other projects in our queue we are planning to finish in the coming weeks. At the very least, I would certainly hope we are able to update this supplement before the end of the year!

I would like to mention that another elegy has been done and themed for the Frozen North. We've released a setting book for Icewind Dale, which contains a bunch of new player options (and we've included a Pale Master archetype in that supplement). The guidebook has a complete full-sized preview, which can be seen here:

Question about Invigorate the Dead "Starting at 6th level, you can cast the animate dead spell
using one of your spell slots" does this only count for 3rd level spell slots or any spell slot?

You can upcast the spell and get the same effect (same for any elegy 6th level feature spells).

I have a quick question. I absolutely love this supplement (Pale Master was my favorite prestige in 3rd and 3.5), but why does the Elergy of Enduring's Invigorate the Dead feature only effect the zombies/skeletons made by Animate Dead and not from other spells (Like Danse Macabre, Finger of Death, Army of the Dead)?

This is a balancing concern. Each elegy gets a 3rd level spell it can cast with an upgraded effect. Extending this effect to multiple spells is outside the scope of what the other elegies get, and when coupled with their touch attack also gained at 6th level, anything more would be too powerful.

Understandable, one more question: Have you considered adding Macabre Creations specific to each Elergy?

Early in development, this was actually the plan. We scrapped it because it felt too limiting rather than being 'special'.

I will share that a few new Macabre Creations & another Elegy are on the way later this year (as a free update, you'll just need to download the newest version).

Cool! Looking forward to them, though I do have a couple more questions:

Is the Raise Incorporeal Undead feature an action, a bonus action, or a free action? Can you have more than 1 at a time?
Why are the Undead Cohorts not a permanent minion for their respective Pale Master, even at later levels?

Raise Incorporeal Undead does not require an action (similar to the Hexblade's Accursed Spectre). In this case, the body just needs to have been dead no longer than 24 hours. You cannot have more than one at at time, as per the description.

For Undead Cohort, this is a balance thing as the minions are fairly strong. Also, we tried to be conscious of not bogging down combat with too many "pets".

I had a quick question regarding some of the Macabre Creations. Mostly the armors. When crafted are they added on to armor or are they their own armor? For example the exoskeleton. It says it's a light or medium armor and gives plus one to ac. Does that mean it's just armor that's classified as light or medium armor and gives only a plus one or is it crafted onto armor like said leather which is eleven plus dex for ac and gives an additional one? I just want some clarification for when I try and play this class one day or dm and have a player who wants to try the class. Thanks in advance.

Hi Ricardo,

Thanks for your question! The enchantments provided by the Macabre Creations are in addition to the item's original stats. However (RAW), the items need to be mundane, aka nonmagical.

So your example of leather armor, the macabre creation requires the armor and enhances it with the bonus in the description.

I hope this answers your question, but if you have any other questions, please join our discord and reach out to us!

Quick question, would the spells or content inside be easily divided unto Necromancers? As I do like the Pale Master from older editions, I'm a sucker for old fashioned Necromancers, and love the master of undeath theme, but want to know before purchasing what, if anything, could be easily translated into Necromancer options. Will be getting this regardless, just curious.

Hi Skylar,

Thanks for the question! Honestly, this was designed as a stand-alone class. There are a few options that could probably be transferable to the 5e Wizard (Necromancer School) if you'd wish, but you would probably want to go through them with your dungeon master to decide what is fair (and what wouldn't end up being overpowered). In older editions, the Pale Master sacrificed their spellcasting abilities for 'undead gifts'. That design philosophy is at work in this class.

That said, there is a section at the end of the supplement that contains undead grafts available to all classes. They have costs and materials. This could be worked into a campaign fairly easily by your DM.

Cheers,
Trevor

Thanks for the quick reply, will definitely be glad to have it in my collection regardless, will be fun to break it out when I've played Necromancer in one too many games.

Look forward to looking through this come payday, danke shoen.

Nothing on DMsGuild is "official" in the sense of being published by Wizards of the Coast, unless it's... released by Wizards of the Coast (e.g. the EEPC, WGTE, or the Extra Life/Red Nose Day charity releases).

There's some content created by other creators that's AL-legal, but it'll usually say so in the product listing if it is (and, I believe, it'd be listed in the AL Content Catalogue).

Just picked this up to play in an upcoming Eberron campaign. As I was planning out my build I was considering taking 2 levels of Wizard specializing in Necromancy. But trying to figure out the spells slots available. With the Pale Master being a 3/4 caster how would you determine your spell slots.

Hi Trevor (nice name btw),

You would calculate your spell slots separately for each class that grants you spellcasting. You can review multiclassing rules here:

Trevor, I haven't bought this product so I don't know if the Pale Master has any special rules regarding multiclassing... but the claim that "You would calculate your spell slots separately for each class that grants you spellcasting" is not true.

You determine your prepared/known spells as if single-classed in each of your spellcasting classes (e.g. a wizard 4/sorcerer 2 prepares spells as a 4th-level wizard (with the base number of spells in their spellbook determined accordingly as well), and separately knows spells as a 2nd-level sorcerer). But your spell slots themselves are determined by adding together your levels in spellcasting classes (not including warlock levels): adding the full number of levels in full-caster classes, half the number of levels in half-caster classes (ranger/paladin), and one-third the number of levels in 1/3-caster classes (Arcane Trickster rogue/Eldritch Knight fighter). So a wizard 4/sorcerer 2 has the same number/distribution of spell slots as a 6th-level...See more

Hi Vis,

Yes, you are 100% correct. When I replied, my brain was reading "spell selection" not spell slots. By the time I realized my error, I could no longer edit my comment on here. We have addressed my comment error on our discord server and all seems well.

I appreciate your clarification!

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
