WYRMS OF THE REALMS

KLAUTH, "Old Snarl"

Dragons are powerful creatures of magic and might. They fill dreams and nightmares alike with splendor, majesty, and the raw force of their personality. Good, evil, and everything inbetween, dragons are the living embodiment of the truly fantastic. A series of articles in Dragon Magazine detailed the Wyrms of the North, giving a profile of the important dragons in the Sword Coast North region of the Forgotten Realms. This article updates that information, reorganizing it and adding more content, and provides details for the latest version of D&D!

The lands of Faerun are no stranger to dragons but few are as deadly as the great red wyrm Klauth, known as Old Snarl because of his nasty look. Dive into the world of this supremely powerful and surprisingly cunning red dragon with WYRMS OF THE REALMS: KLAUTH! Inside you'll find the following:

* Legends and stories concerning Klauth that characters may pick up while around the Sword Coast

* The plots of goals of Klauth, giving a good overview of how the dragon fits into the larger picture of the Forgotten Realms

* An overview of the dragon's domain and lair

* Agents and allies of Klauth, including Delsephine Shamor the airship captain, the deranged dragonborn sorcerer Orlo Kazzareek, and the cruel and utterly devoted elven ranger Cairel Flamedream, with full statistics for each NPC

* A look at the tools and magic used by Klauth

* Suggestions on using Klauth in the hardcover adventures, including Tyranny of Dragons, Storm King's Thunder, and others

* The CR 28 stat block for Klauth using some of the alternate rules in the Book of Dragons for 5th Edition by Conner McCall!

* A Tier 2 encounter, "Last Egg of Pyrokrayseth" that can be used to introduce Klauth's obsession in your game

Klauth is a powerful dragon in the Sword Coast with an interest in the dramatic unfolding events that call characters to the role of heroes. He can serve as the ultimate villain, an untrustworthy ally, a dangerous meddler, or a combination of all these and more!

Question regarding Klauth's statblock; for his Crush attack what's the range of it? All it gives is "Klauth throws himself at a target creature and lands centered on that creature’s space." with no reach or within so-and-so feet. Also for his size what would you consider colossal to be?

Other than that the only thing I wanted to bring up was if the spell that Klauth uses to take the lifeforce from the dragon eggs was something considered to be added or not. I've seen it somewhere when looking but it was in an older edition so it's quite different to look at it compared to 5e, haha.

For Klauth's Crush ability, I would consider his flying speed as the range (80 feet). Colossal is the next step up from Gargantuan, so it takes up 5 squares to a side. I believe there are more details in the Book of Dragons supplement, including the next size up (Colossal+).

Yeah, the life force leeching spell I believe was in the Dragon Magazine article for Wyrms of the North. I deliberately didn't convert it over because something like that falls outside the realm of a spell, in my mind. It's wholly evil, destructive, and by putting it in terms of a spell it becomes a tool usable by the characters. I prefer to think of it as a complicated ritual with many considerations, mainly to serve the purpose of a story involving Klauth (or someone who stole the secret of the ritual from Old Snarl!).

I hope this helps, thank you for your purchase!

I am thinking of buying this bad boy, was it a good buy? I just need a powerful statblock, like greatest living dragon statblokc, and a cool lair with maps and minions for Klauth. Will this get me there?

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
