Ghesh's Guide to Making Things - A System for Crafting and Modifying Equipment in 5th Edition D&D

ADD TO WISHLIST >

Craft legendary weapons and armor!

Ghesh's Guide to Making Things is a crafting and modification system designed to complement the 5th Edition rulesystem. The kobold inventor, Ghesh Fizzlebang, is an enigmatic character of some renown, known for his rather explosive ways of improving the equipment of his fellow adventurers. Though his background may cause some raised eyebrows as to the validity of his craft, Ghesh has thoroughly tested all of his inventions for imperfections before releasing it to the world—as is evident by the burns he's received and fingers he's lost.

In this supplement you will find:

  • Guidelines on crafting every weapon and set of armor appearing in the Player's Handbook
  • Additional materials you can add to weapons and armor to grant them new, foe-crushing effects. Examples include adamantine, azurite, and cold iron.
  • 90 modifications you can add to your equipment, such as the finned, glamoured, and hardened modifications for armor and the beast singer, uppercut, and lucky modifications for weapons.
  • A system for using bombs and grenades, including special bombmaker's tools.
  • A new weapon: the grenade launcher
  • Over 20 unique bombs and grenades. Examples include the binding bomb, ram rockets, and the vortex grenade.

With this supplement in hand, you can tailor your equipment to fit your character as they grow more powerful. The family greatsword you inherited can follow you from 1st to 20th level, growing in power as you enhance it using modifications and additional materials. The chain mail you found in an ancient dwelling can be improved to new levels of quality, elevating it from simple, protective steel to a legendary set of armor infused with arcane might.

Every table can benefit from Ghesh's Guide to Making Things. Just don't tell Ghesh that. It'll go straight to his head and the last thing we need is a kobold with a superiority complex.

hi i like what you have put together here! although i do have a question. On page 7, it seems like the weapon tiers is identical to the armor tiers, even in the description. is there an updated version that has that fixed? thank you!

Hey, I absolutely love this and am looking forward to incorporating it into my game. Quick question, how did you come up with the base times for crafting mundane items? We are playing with some other homebrew content, and I want to be able to apply your system to the unique equipment, but a lot of the equipment has prices that don’t have an equivalent price listed in this or a price near it (130, 300, 1200, and 2760 just to name a few examples).

If the cost was less than 1 gp = 4 hours.
Between 1-9 gp = 1 day.
Between 10-29 = 2 days.
Between 30-50+ = 3 days.

There are plenty of exceptions to this rule, as I often decreased or increased the crafting duration due to item complexity, like with the dart and the hand crossbow. I didn't have to account for too many big numbers, as it's only the armors that get that high. And for those I made decisions based on the individual item rather than general ones.

Thanks for getting back to me. This helps a lot, and it is good to know that I am not insane for thinking that some of the items weren't fitting into a clean formula.

Hi, I'm a big fan giving tool proficiencies new purposes, so I'm planning to use this book together with the monster loot series in a monster hunter like campaign, where the PC's have to craft most of their own equipment. So far im only missing items for casters like wands and staffs, maybe also some kind of accessories. Did you already publish something like this or do you plan to this in the upcoming future?

I don't have any plans for that at the moment. I'm taking a break from most things publishing, so it's gonna be a bit quiet from my end for the next few weeks. Glad you're enjoying the content though!

Hi I have a question regarding the bombs, I get for the Binding bomb that you make a roll against a NPCs AC because it targets them, but for bombs like Light Shell, Healing Grenade and Incendiary Grenade that target an area, do you just pick a spot and throw anywhere up to 60 feet, like a spell? Is there any roll involved?
Also does throwing one count as a part of the Attack action or Use Object action?

Good question! With bombs like the ones you mentioned, they can be thrown like an improvised weapon at a specific point of a character's choosing within range. I'd place the AC similar to the way DCs are calculated (5 is very easy, like placing the bomb at your feet. 10 is easy, like throwing it on a flat piece of ground. 20 is hard, like tossing it towards a small opening high up on a wall, etc.).

When throwing a bomb, follow the rules as described on page 33 (pasted below). In cases where the bomb affects an area instead of a single target, you can follow the rules suggested above to make the throwing of the bombs a bit more erratic.

"You can choose to toss or throw bombs at your opponents, in which case you treat the bomb as an improvised weapon with a range of 20/60 feet. If you miss, the bomb lands in a random spot within 5 feet of the target. It then goes off, unless stated otherwise in the bomb’s description."

Hope this helps!

Thanks a lot for getting back to me, this is really helpful and exactly what I need.

But just to clarify 100% throwing the grenade is a improve weapon so if I am playing a fighter or someone with Extra Attack, I can make multiple grenade attacks on my turn?

I love the upgrades and system in the book, but have a question regarding 2 armor upgrades: resistant (intermediate) and elemental affinity (advanced). As described in the book, elemental affinity seems to be a worse version of resistant, only it is of a higher tier and more expensive. Is this an error? Thanks!
Reply
Customer avatar
Anne G February 26, 2021 9:52 pm UTC
CREATOR
It is not an error. Resistant is only offered as a single tier and cannot be upgraded. Elemental Affinity can be upgraded to give you immunity, making it a more lucrative option. You can also have both Resistant and Elemental Affinity on the same piece of armor, potentially giving you resistance to two different damage types.

Resistant is meant for lower-level play and to serve as a safe choice for people wanting an upgraded piece of armor. Elemental Affinity is for higher tier play and is more expensive because it can be upgraded and it can be stacked with Resistant. Hope that makes sense!

You are of course free to adjust costs and the like as you see fit. Your game, your rules.

Question about modification slots. If you have a basic weapon and go to intermediate, does the weapon keep its basic mod slot and gain two intermediate slots? Or does it just have two intermediate mod slots.

Sorry if this is obvious.

The basic modification slot is replaced by the two intermediate slots. If the basic modification slot had a mod in it when it was upgraded, this mod stays there and fills up one of the two intermediate slots.

Hope this helps!

When it says it requires 2 days to craft something, does it imply 48 hours or does it imply 16 hours?

There seems to be no guideline on how to adjust the price of bombs crafted at a higher quality.

The price as listed is the same no matter the quality of the bomb. It's basically rewarding characters in higher tier play because their skills at crafting the bombs get better and thus the bomb gets better too. This rarely comes into play with vendors as they are mostly low-level NPCs who don't often get access to higher-level explosives.

Feel free to adjust the prices so they make sense for your game! The in-game economy is really hard to balance in a product like this since everyone plays the game differently.

Couple of suggestions for common (non-magical) modifiers:

Chain (one handed weapons or spears/pole-arms no more than 7' long) Common modification in Kara-Taur, adds a weighted chain at the end of the weapon and gives the weapon properties: Martial and Entangle

Brutal (any) add small spikes and serrations to the weapon. Does critical damage on a natural 19 or 20 roll

Anne, Would you be interested in having this converted to a Fantasy Grounds module? If so we can talk details. I have several conversions for sale if you want to see my quality. Most recently I produced the Hamunds Harvesting Handbook series by Jeffrey Yang and have done work for M.T. Black, Heath Harris and Jeremy Forbing. I would be most interested in converting this for use on the Fantasy Grounds virtual tabletop. If you wish I can be most easily reached at lovins.jeffrey@gmail.com or at facebook. https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100010067569617

Hello, i have to say i am very interested in buying your book, but i have a question before buying....how do you balance this crafted items with the current items in the scales of rarity of magic items (uncommon, rare, etc)?, thanks and keep going with this projects :)

Many of the modifications are made to replace the some of the magic items found in the DMG or other places. Generally, the rarity of magic items and the quality of equipment can be set up like this:

Common/Uncommon - Basic
Uncommon/Rare - Intermediate
Very Rare - Advanced
Legendary - Masterwork

Hope this helps!

My party and I are enjoying this very so much its a work of art. While were discussing it a question arose: How do we determine the quality of a set of robes and how many upgrades it would be able to hold?

A set of robes function just as any other set of armor would (even if it isn't technically armor). Since robes are simply clothes, I suggest using traveler's clothes to figure out the basic price of the robe. Or perhaps fine clothes if your wizard or monk is feeling fancy :)

Question regarding the wording for part of the description of Brutal upgrades:

"When you roll ... on any damage dice for this weapon, you may reroll the dice and must keep the second result."

This differs from the wording of the Great Weapon Fighting fighting style in that it specifies "dice" over "die"... For clarity, is this intentional? That you would choose on *any* rolled 1s to reroll EVERY damage die at once, taking the new result? Or is it meant to be read similarly to GWF, considering each damage die separately?

Definitely looks more like the wording used on Savage Attacker, but you don't get to choose between them you must take the second roll.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
