Redemption Rigs - A Soul Saving Modification for Infernal War Machines

Characters who find themselves in Avernus and in need of transportation may be apprehensive to utilize vehicles that run on tortured souls. Those with moderate knowledge of the arcane and a bit of skill in foraging, bartering, and crafting may find redemption rigs an acceptable alternative.

This document explains the rules for converting an existing infernal war machine as well as building a new redemption rig from scratch, what the benefits and drawbacks of the new types of vehicles are, and the modified rules for using this less evil option in a campaign.

I think I’m missing an obvious - if redemption rigs aren’t burning soul coins for fuel, what are they using for fuel instead?

Hi Charlotte,

Thanks for your question. You are correct that these vehicles do not use souls for fuel. The short answer is that they run on arcane or divine magic.

The concept is similar to Spelljammer helms, from AD&D. If you're familiar with Spelljammer and the way air and gravity works in the D&D multiverse, you can take practically any ship (even one built on your planet of choice for water passage), add a Spelljammer helm, and then you can traverse space at exceptionally high speed. You carry air with you (as all objects, even people, have "air pockets" around them in space that allow them to survive for a period of time) and gravity work in a very static fashion (all gravity is the same no matter the mass of the object creating the gravity). Spelljammer helms are effectively the magic equivalent to a "warp drive" or "hyperdrive" if you're into Star Trek to Star Wars mythology. The helm itself itself is nothing more than a seat infused with...See more

Hi Steven,

I'm sorry for such a late reply. You may or may not know that there was a security breach in the DMs Guild website back in the autumn. I think that may be why I missed your message and may also have to do with why you had issues retrieving the resources. I'm in the process of going through my materials this week and will re-upload files to make sure they are available. You should get an email alerting you once a version update is made and you can try to download again. If you still have issues, please post a reply and I'll find a way to get a copy to you. Thank for your interest and understanding.

Original electronic
Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
